What do you get with a rubber ball, a laundry basket, and some drum sticks? Good exercise and great sounds! At our memory care community, Madison Heights at The Prado, we believe staying active and having as much fun as possible is the best way to live. Our residents in Macon, GA are rocking and rolling their way through life despite a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
How are memory care communities surviving the pandemic?
The Alzheimer’s Association noticed an alarming statistic associated with those living with memory loss during the COVID-19 pandemic. The increase of senior isolation and decrease in access to proper care took an especially significant toll on the dementia community.
Madison Heights at The Prado took this time to implement the precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention while continuing to enrich the lives of their residents.
How did our residents adjust and experience the pandemic?
- We wore our protective face coverings.
- Residents and families kept their distance with car parades and window visits.
- We enjoyed the visits from the Georgia Air National Guard, who helped us deep clean.
- Our residents’ loved ones decorated the yard with messages of positivity.
- On another special occasion, we received protection from our superhero team.
- We received the COVID-19 vaccine.
Why are activities important for people with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia?
The National Institute on Aging says, “People with Alzheimer’s disease need to be active and do things they enjoy.” To reduce the anxiety levels and increase the happiness of our residents, we provide them with structured activities and engage in daily routines.
What activities did we do during the pandemic?
Our varied schedule of events—from rocking on the front porch with Lucy the cat to moving and grooving with Early Clover—contributes to a vibrant scene at Madison Heights at The Prado.
