Did you know that more than five million Americans are estimated to be living with Alzheimer’s? This disease is the nation’s sixth leading cause of death, and is expected to affect as many as 16 million people by 2050. As the number of people facing Alzheimer’s continues to rise, so too does the need for caregivers for those affected. Recently, Atlas Senior Living Regional Director Marcus Covar was interviewed by Caring.com on the personal impact of caregiving for residents with Alzheimer’s, which he sees firsthand at the Atlas community he leads, Madison Heights in Evans, Georgia.
Covar explained to Caring.com: “Full-time caregiving can be challenging for the staff as well, requiring extensive training and exercises to make sure that people are equipped to deal with the stresses of interacting with people with dementia on a daily basis. Many burn out, but some great caregivers stay on for years and years.”
