Pet Therapy for Seniors
We have started pet therapy at our communities. Pet therapy has been shown to help increase the levels of serotonin, (feel good hormones) and calm anxiety. Pets may provide a source of companionship and affection. Pet therapy also helps increase physical activity in seniors by the walking with or playing with pets.
Keep Em' Moving
Here at Madison Heights and Kelly Place we always treat our residents with love, respect and compassion. Our goal is to keep our seniors as physically and mentally active as possible. We do this by planning physical and mental activities and events for them. Our activities include creative art such as painting which provides the opportunity for individual expression and may help improve memory. Painting is also shown to help reduce stress, stimulate sensory perception, boost mood and improve behavior. We also do gardening activities in our garden club which provides therapeutic benefits and helps reduce stress. Music is also one of the greatest activities for seniors with dementia while singing and dancing, they can express their feelings verbally and non-verbally.
Volunteers Needed???
We are ALWAYS looking for and accepting volunteers to do activities with our seniors. Several local churches and individuals in our area have volunteered to come once a month to do bible study or praise and worship with our seniors and they absolutely LOVE IT. The public library also comes once a month and does different activities with our seniors.

I have been a nurse for 32 years and I have found that taking care of the senior population is very rewarding to me. My life goal is to be giving and always try to make a difference in someone else’s life. At Madison Heights and Kelly Place I feel I do make a difference even if it’s just to sit down and talk with one of the residents. I keep in mind that the majority of them didn’t choose to be here and I can spend time with them aside from the nursing part and maybe help them to feel at home and happier. I love my job here and the residents really are very appreciative of what we do. To see them happy makes me happy.
