Music and the Mind
Music can lift our spirits, it can bring up long forgotten memories, and as we sing along we forget about our troubles. Singing along with friends at Happy Hour causes the brain to secrete the chemical Oxytocin, a naturally occurring hormone that creates a bonding and warm feeling. This feeling can alleviate chronic pain, anxiety and loneliness. The power of music has been found to help those with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease. The author of the article went to visit a memory care facility when they had music therapy. Just a woman with a guitar and her voice. The group was silent with blank stares. She started singing and one by one they started singing along with smiles and became energetic and happy. Through the 1980s and 90s they have been doing a lot of studies on music therapy and the mind. They argue that music is a “neurologic necessity”, and that music could “locate the lost personalities” of dementia patients. On the TV show 48 hours, Concetta Tomarino, a music therapy expert, played a swing tune on her accordion for a near-catatonic dementia patient, who jumped out of his wheelchair and started dancing. This patient had danced to this type of music when he was a child and the music had brought that memory back. By stimulating the brain’s memory network, music can trigger memories that were thought to be lost forever. – AARP Magazine December 2023/January 2024.
March Activity Highlights
Dress Days For March: We have new and fun dress days this month. Thank you to everyone who participated in the dress days last month. Don’t forget to get your Goldton $$ at the Front Desk when you dress up.
Painting Class: This month we will be painting a very simple and easy Grand Canyon. We are also doing an abstract painting, which I think will be a lot of fun! You do not have to have any art talent to paint in abstract – so I am hoping to see at least ten people in that class! Class is on the 14th and the 20th at 3:30pm.
New Monday Socials: Each Monday except the 2nd Monday of the month, we will have a fun social in the Bistro. Each social will have its own theme. For example, Monday the 4th is National Pound Cake Day – so we will serve pound cake with strawberries and whipped cream!
PORT OF CALL – This month we are headed to IRELAND! We will be having a special dinner and entertainment after at 6pm. Friends and family are invited so we hope to see you at 5pm on the 15th.
Good Friday: Good Friday is the 29th and we will be singing Hymns with Donna at the piano at 11am. We also will have Station Hill Church come after dinner at 5:45pm to have a Good Friday Service.

Beyonica Holt
Beyonica is so helpful and caring. Her love for the residents is easy to see. Beyoonica was born and raised in Hickman County, Tennessee. She has 6 sisters and 1 brother. She has a identical twin sister named Veronica. Beyonica met her husband at 16, and he was 15, they got married when she turned 20. They have been together for 22 years and married for 18 years. They have two children, a daughter Savannah, who is 18 years old and graduating from High School soon, and a “surprise” son, Paxton who is 2 years old; which is a 16 year gap! Beyonica has worked in the healthcare field for 20 years as a caregiver, CNA, and a Activities Director. Her love for her beautiful grandmother Hazel was her inspiration for being in the healthcare field. Hazel was so important to Beyonica, she was her whole world until she passed 13 years ago. Beyonica was also a hair stylist for 9 years, but missed working as a caregiver so she came back. And we are glad she did! Thank you Beyonica for being so sweet and caring to everyone.

If you don’t know Michael, he is the one that is wearing the fun hats or taking his cat Oliver for a walk, although the cat is not walking. They moved around a few times, living in Texas, Colorado, Minnesota and then back to Texas. Michael and his wife Kayla went to Martin Methodist College. Michael ended up teaching there at the college, and he also taught at a few High Schools in Texas. Kayla taught English at Martin Methodist for 30 years. and also was the Play Director. Michael got his Masters at MTSU here in Murfreesboro TN, and Kayla got her PhD at Texas Christian University. He describes his wife Kayla as “A very most wonderful person”. They were married for 48 years before she passed away last year. He then moved here to the Goldton – and we are happy he did!!
