Memory Care is Moving and Grooving!

Antonia, our Memory Care Activities Coordinator has Memory Care Moving and Grooving! She has added many new fun and engaging activities. The AL Choir is singing for them, and Donna is at the piano while they sing Hymns once a week. They had a fun get together and celebrated Black History Month. They are also having a Chocolate Social. She has added more painting classes and Music Therapy. The residents had a blast with Jellybean Bingo with Bonnie, and the Tie-Dye Shirt activity was a huge hit! We have more participating in exercise, both physical and mind fitness games. Lastly, Antonia has really made an effort to work with them one on one. The residents really appreciate her time and the care she gives.

Yosemite

Yosemite is home to a “firefall.” While it’s not actually fire, the Horsetail Fall on the eastern edge of El Capitan in the Yosemite Valley gives off the illusion of a fiery orange fall when the sunset hits at just the right angle for a few short weeks in February

The Words of Wisdom Project

Words of Wisdom

This month I will be asking everyone to give us some words of wisdom. A saying, or a quote, advice, or anything you would like to share. This month I had to ask Google, and this is what I came up with…
** “When the going gets rough – turn to wonder”. – Parker Palmer
** “If you have knowledge, let others light their candles in it”. – Margaret Fuller
** A bird doesn’t sing because it has an answer, it sings because it has a song”. – Maya Angelou
** Your Word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path”. Psalm 119:105 – God

Walking can Boost Your Brain Health

Walking can Boost Your Brain Health

Walking a little each day has been linked to improved cognitive function, including enhanced memory, attention, and problem-solving skills. Studies have shown that walking increases blood flow to the brain, leading to the release of hormones that promote the growth of new neurons, ultimately improving overall brain function. Walking does all kinds of great things for you. Walking improves your mood by the release of endorphins. Walking gives you better sleep, walking during the day enhances the production of serotonin which is a precursor to melatonin. It is getting warmer out there, so lets get out and walk!

Recipe Spotlight:

Spicy Fried Chicken Pasta

Ingredients:

6 pieces cold, spicy fried chicken
6 cups cooked rotini pasta
6 boiled eggs, yolks separated
1 cup mayonnaise
1 tbsp Creole mustard
1/4 cup minced onions
1/4 cup minced celery
1 tsp chopped garlic
1/4 cup minced red bell peppers
1/4 cup minced green bell peppers
1/4 cup sliced green onions
1/2 cup sweet pickle relish
salt and pepper to taste

Directions:
To make this dish, start by getting 6 pieces of spicy fried chicken from your favorite fast food outlet. I recommend Popeyes. Cut the bone-in chicken into cubes, keeping the skin intact. In a bowl, mash egg yolks, then add mayonnaise and Creole mustard, blending well. Dice egg whites and add them to the mixture. Combine all other ingredients except the chicken and pasta, ensuring they’re coated with the sauce. Add rotini pasta and gently mix, then add the fried chicken cubes. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve garnished with boiled eggs or additional pieces of hot fried chicken. Feel free to personalize the dish with your own seasoning blend. The key flavor comes from the seasoning on the chicken before frying.

Associate of the Month

Kelly Braden

Kelly Braden April Associate of the Month

At the age of 17, I assisted my family with my grandmother who had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease. It was not easy, but it sparked a joy in me for the healthcare field. I have been in the healthcare field ever since. April 1st will make 10 years as a nurse, and I am hoping to get the opportunity to go back to school in the future. I enjoy spending time with my beautiful daughter, family and helping people. I have been enjoying my short time at The Goldton; all the staff and residents have been so kind to me.

Kelly has had an amazing start here at The Goldton. She is ALWAYS willing to help with anything. She will do the smallest to the largest job for our residents – and do it with a smile and kindness. Thank you Kelly!

Jim Holloway

Jim Holloway April Resident of the Month

Jim was born and raised in a small community called ‘Hathaway’ in Tennessee. His house was right next to the Mississippi River, and he loved to look at the boats going by. Jim then went off to college at the University of Tennessee of Martin, and got his bachelors’ in Architecture. He met his wife there and they got married when he graduated. He was then drafted in the Military and was sent to Arkansas. He was in charge of testing and interviewing the new recruits. A quick fun fact – Jim tested and interviewed Elvis Presley! Jim spent one year in Arkansas and one year in Germany during the Korean War. After the Military, Jim got a job in sales, but did not like it. He went back to school at the University of North Carolina of Chapel Hill, and got his Masters in Physics. He then was a professor, teaching Physics, but three years in he realized he needed to get his PhD. So, Jim then went to South East Missouri University to get his PhD. Jim worked at Penn State teaching Physics for over 20 years, and loved it! One fun thing that Jim loved to do with his four kids was sledding. Jim bought a Toboggan, which is a 6 person sled. He and the kids would have a great time going down the snowy hills.
