Art and Creativity

Art and creativity in older adults play a crucial role in promoting cognitive well-being, emotional expression, and overall mental health. Engaging in artistic activities such as painting, drawing, or sculpting can provide a fulfilling outlet for self-expression and reflection, allowing older individuals to explore new facets of their identity and life experiences. Beyond the aesthetic outcomes, the process of creating art stimulates various cognitive functions, enhancing memory, problem-solving skills, and attention. Moreover, artistic pursuits offer a social dimension, fostering a sense of community and connection among older adults. Whether through group art classes or individual endeavors, the creative journey in later years becomes a powerful tool for maintaining vitality, cultivating a sense of purpose, and embracing the joy of continuous learning and growth.

Tips for keeping Minds Active

Keep the Mind Active

To maintain an active and sharp mind, incorporating a variety of cognitive activities into daily routines is essential.

Engaging in regular mental exercises such as puzzles, crosswords, and chess can stimulate different areas of the brain and enhance cognitive function.

Additionally, staying physically active has been shown to have positive effects on mental acuity, as exercise promotes increased blood flow to the brain and the release of neurotransmitters that support cognitive health.

Keep the Mind Active

Embracing lifelong learning by exploring new hobbies, acquiring new skills, or delving into diverse subjects also helps to keep the mind agile and adaptable.

Socializing with others, participating in stimulating conversations, and seeking out new experiences can further contribute to cognitive vitality.

Lastly, prioritizing sufficient and quality sleep, managing stress through relaxation techniques, and maintaining a balanced diet rich in brain-boosting nutrients are integral components of a holistic approach to keeping minds active and resilient.

Transforming Lives with Technology

Transforming Lives with Technology

In recent years, there have been remarkable innovations in Memory Care, aimed at enhancing the quality of life for individuals with cognitive impairments such as Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. One significant advancement is the integration of technology in memory care solutions. Smart devices and wearable technologies equipped with location trackers and vital sign monitors offer caregivers real-time information about the well-being and whereabouts of individuals with memory issues. These technologies not only improve safety by preventing wandering incidents but also provide valuable data for healthcare professionals to tailor personalized care plans. Additionally, virtual reality (VR) has emerged as a promising tool for memory care. VR applications can recreate familiar environments or trigger positive memories through immersive experiences, providing therapeutic benefits by stimulating cognitive functions and promoting emotional well-being.

Resident of the Month

Shellia Hambright

Shellia Hambright, Resident of the Month December 2023 | Legacy Ridge Trussville

Meet Shellia Hambright, our distinguished Resident of the Month at Legacy Ridge Memory Care. Born on November 5, 1942, in the charming town of Winfield, AL, Shellia was the beloved daughter of Guston and Florene Perry. Her family grew when, nine years later, she welcomed her baby sister, Loretta, into the world. In her high school days, Shellia showcased her leadership skills as the captain of the girls’ basketball team.

After graduating from Winfield High School, she embarked on a new adventure, moving to Birmingham with two cousins to attend business school. It was there that she met the love of her life, William (Bill) Hambright. The couple celebrated 57 years of marriage before Bill’s passing in April of this year. Their union blessed them with a daughter, Lorene Lawrene, who is happily married to Joel, and twin granddaughters, Caitlin and Shelbie, whom Shellia proudly refers to as her “Mamaw.”

Shellia’s family extended when her sister married Larry Harris, a man Shellia considered not just a brother-in-law but a brother. Larry and her sister gifted her with a nephew, Darrell. Even after Bill retired from the National Guard, Shellia and he remained actively involved with the National Guard Family Support group.

Professionally, Shellia dedicated an impressive 47 years of service to Reeve Electric as a bookkeeper. Hired just a week after the company’s inception, she considered her colleagues as more than coworkers—they were family. Two years before her retirement, she and Bill relocated to Trussville to be closer to their cherished granddaughters. Upon retiring, Shellia embraced her role as a full-time grandmother, showering Caitlin and Shelbie with love and spoils.

A devoted member of CrossPoint Baptist Church, Shellia actively participates in the Bible Study class named Legacy (formerly known as the World’s Greatest Sunday School Class). Known for her kind spirit, Shellia enjoys writing notes and sending cards, always seeking to uplift and encourage others. Her favorite Bible chapter, 1 Corinthians 13, reflects her enduring commitment to love and kindness. Christmas holds a special place in her heart as her favorite time of the year.

Shellia and Bill shared a love for nature, spending time working in the yard and delighting in the company of birds and squirrels they fed. Their home was also filled with the companionship of one dog and three cats. If you’re ever at Legacy Ridge and have a furry friend, be sure to stop by for a visit.

Since May, Shellia has been a cherished resident of Legacy Ridge, where she has embraced the opportunity to forge new friendships with her neighbors. Whether engaged in exercises, crafts, or enjoying performances by singers and piano players, Shellia radiates joy, making her an integral part of our Legacy Ridge family. Her positive energy and warm spirit continue to inspire us all, and we are honored to celebrate Shellia Hambright as our Resident of the Month.

Merry Christmas
