Atlanta Native - We Celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Dr. King was a Baptist minister and social activist who led the civil rights movement in the United States from the mid-1950s until his death by assassination in 1968. His leadership was fundamental to that movement’s success in ending the legal segregation of African Americans in the South and other parts of the United States. King rose to national prominence as head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which promoted nonviolent tactics, such as the massive March on Washington (1963), to achieve civil rights. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964.

Hey Alexa Champion

Alexa is a cloud-based service from Amazon available on hands-free, voice-activated devices such as Amazon Echo. Studies have shown that using the Alexa device potentially helps seniors age in place with support for their social engagement, health and wellness through smart home technology. It assists with basic tasks such as managing to-do lists and providing entertainment by playing their favorite music, reading stories or telling jokes. Other primary benefits include:

*Create Lists and Place Orders: Ask Alexa to create a grocery list, then tell it to add items as you think of them. When you go shopping, Alexa reads your list from your phone app or orders through Amazon Fresh for at-home deliveries.

*Create Medication Reminders: Have Alexa tell senior loved ones when to take medications to eliminate missed or double doses. Alexa can also remind seniors to order prescriptions and refills or order them if they use Amazon Pharmacy.

*Get Follow-Up Reminders: Receive important follow-up reminders on paying a specific bill, scheduling a doctor’s appointment or making important phone calls.

*Request Entertainment: Keep boredom at bay through Alexa’s wealth of entertainment options. Loved ones can ask it to play music, audiobooks or podcasts, or turn on the television and find their favorite programs.

Resident of the Month

Carolyn Nilson

Carolyn Nilson, Resident of the Month, January 2025

Our resident of the month is Mrs. Carolyn Nilson. You can always find her with a welcoming smile ready to go to BINGO or shopping outing. Very family orientated and warm, Carolyn is a mother of 3 adult children. Originally born in the Carolinas, but after serving in the AirForce she and her husband of over 65 years raised their family in Oregon. As a family, Carolyn recalls that camping was something they loved to do, and she enjoyed so much.
If she could give her “secret of a good life” it would be to “do things as a family and enjoy the small times.”
It is evident that her kindness is the reason she is being recognized this month as the star Resident! Congratulations Ms. Carolyn!

You're Welcome Here Too!

With our focus on the family and community setting, we extend a 2025 Invitation to you to volunteer your time with us here. Whether it is enjoying a game of BINGO, reading the Daily Chronicle, a Bible Study or Devotion, WE INVITE YOU!

Serving as a volunteer offers important opportunities for social interaction for both you and the people you work with in any senior living community. Giving a manicure, providing an escort for an outdoor walk, leading a discussion, or simply having a conversation, can not only put a smile on a resident’s face, but also provide much needed support and encouragement.

Loneliness has been directly related to an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. With that in mind, think about the difference you can make in someone’s life when you take the time to sit and chat or offer a meaningful experience for them.
