Greek Heritage

Alexa play "Chariots of Fire Tile" from "Vangelis"

Chariots of Fire (1981) is an Oscar-winning film based on the true story of two British athletes, Eric Liddell and Harold Abrahams, competing in the 1924 Olympics. Its iconic score by Greek composer Vangelis became one of the most recognizable movie themes in history. The film won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, and remains a symbol of perseverance and triumph.

Ancient Greeks

Pythagoras ( around 570 – 495 BC) was more than just a mathematician; he was a philosopher, mystic, and the founder of a secretive brotherhood that combined mathematics with spirituality. During his lifetime, he was considered almost a demi-god, a man who had mastered body, mind, and soul. His influence extended beyond mathematics—his teachings formed a strict, almost religious society that studied numbers, music, and philosophy.

Beyond numbers, Pythagoras made key discoveries in music theory, realizing that harmonious sounds are based on simple numerical ratios. His fascination with mathematics led him to view the world as a structured, mathematical entity. Some of the most beautiful words and concepts are linked to him:

The whitewashed cliffs of Santorini showcase Mediterranean charm. Whether exploring ancient ruins, sun-drenched islands, or dramatic landscapes, Greece captivates with its timeless beauty and profound legacy.

Understanding and Managing Stress

Stress is a natural physical and emotional response to challenges in life—like work, school, health, or relationships. In small doses, it can help us cope and solve problems. But when stress becomes long-term (chronic), it can negatively affect both physical and mental health.

Common Effects of Stress:

  • Emotional changes like fear, sadness, frustration, or numbness

  • Trouble sleeping, concentrating, or making decisions

  • Physical symptoms such as headaches, stomach issues, or fatigue

  • Worsening of chronic health conditions

  • Increased use of alcohol, tobacco, or other substances

Healthy Ways to Cope:

Mind Care:

  • Take breaks from overwhelming news and social media

  • Practice relaxation: deep breathing, stretching, meditation

  • Spend time outdoors and do activities you enjoy

  • Keep a journal and reflect on what you’re grateful for

  • Talk with trusted people or join community groups

Body Care:

  • Get consistent sleep—aim for 7+ hours nightly

  • Stay active—try for 20–30 minutes of movement a day

  • Eat a balanced diet with fruits, veggies, whole grains, and lean proteins

  • Limit alcohol and avoid drugs not prescribed to you

  • Don’t smoke or vape—support is available to help you quit

  • Keep up with regular medical checkups and vaccinations

Managing stress doesn’t require big changes—small, consistent habits can make a powerful difference in your overall well-being.

Greek Pasta Salad

Greek Pasta Salad

Ingredients:
For the Pasta Salad:
8 ounces farfalle (bowtie pasta)
1/2 English cucumber, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
10 ounces cherry tomatoes, halved
1 to 2 shallots, chopped (or 1/3 to 1/2 cup chopped red onion)
1 cup chopped fresh parsley
2 tablespoons capers, drained and rinsed
1/2 cup pitted Kalamata olives
1/3 cup feta cheese, crumbled, more or less to your liking
For the Greek Salad Dressing:
1 lemon, zested and juiced
1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 teaspoon dried oregano
Kosher salt
Black pepper
Extra virgin olive oil

Instructions:
Cook the pasta: Boil the pasta in salted water according to the package instructions (about 8 minutes). Drain and set aside briefly to cool just a bit. Make the dressing: In a large bowl, mix the lemon juice and zest, red wine vinegar, garlic, oregano, and a good pinch of kosher salt and black pepper. Whisk to combine, and while whisking, drizzle in about 1/4 cup extra virgin olive oil.

Add the veggies: To the bowl with the dressing, add the pasta, cucumber, bell pepper, tomatoes, shallots, parsley, capers, and Kalamata olives. Toss to coat, then add the feta and toss again very gently. Chill: For best flavor, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to 24 hours before serving. Give the salad a final toss and serve cold or at room temperature.

Resident of the Month

Lois Milton

Lois Hughes Milton was born in rural area of Dublin, Laurens County, Georgia, to parents, Robert Fulton Hughes, and Naomi Day Hughes. Her early education was received in space provided by her country church. She graduated from high school in 1956, and Savannah State University, 1961. She met her husband and father of their two lovely children, Melissa Milton Jackson and William J. Milton, Jr. during college. Dr. Milton practiced medicine in Savannah and is now deceased. She has three beautiful grandchildren, William III, Gabrielle, and Dahnielle.

Lois chose to work with families and children and served on many boards and advisory councils geared to working with children and families. Since she worked with families in public housing, her aim was to offer programs and activities including parenting training, and activities for children and families to make sure they knew how to access services in our community. Example: Designed, established, and implemented the Resident Services section of Housing Authority of Savannah, organized a Value League Program, (a therapeutic) program for youth, in conjunction with the West Broad Street YMCA, initiated a grant and received funding for Drug Elimination Program in Savannah. Upon becoming a Certified PRAISE Parent Instructor, interested parents were provided parenting training. They then became parent trainers. PRAISE was the first Afrocentric parenting training in the State. Devised a way for parents and the Board of Education to more effectively communicate. Examples of Boards and Advisory Councils: United Way, Girl Scouts, Hospice Savannah, West Broad YMCA, Department of Family and Children Services, (Family Unity Advisory Council), Homeless Authority, Food bank, Senior Citizens, Safe Shelter for Battered Women.
Lois enjoyed her life’s work. She is a member of First Bryan Baptist Church in Savannah.

Her time at Legacy has meant a lot to her and is a blessing.

Associate of the Month

Leslie Miller

A proud Georgia native, Leslie Miller has dedicated her career to the nursing profession, bringing compassion and dedication to every role she undertakes. Currently, she serves as an Admission Coordinator and Med Tech at Bryan County Health & Rehab, where she plays a vital role in ensuring quality care for residents.

Leslie became a valued member of the Legacy at Savannah Quarters family two years ago, where she continues to serve as a Med Tech. With a deep passion for helping others, she finds joy in interacting with residents and making a meaningful impact on their lives. She embraces every opportunity for growth and is grateful for the experiences and relationships she has built along the way.

Beyond her professional life, Leslie is a devoted mother of four and a proud grandmother to three wonderful grandchildren. She cherishes every moment spent with her family. Known for her warm personality and positive attitude, Leslie is a beloved team member who brings encouragement and support to her colleagues every day.
