Let’s have fun and join in on the themed dress up days!

Royal Arms of the Kingdom of Scotland

“Or, a lion rampant Gules armed and langued Azure within a double tressure flory counter-flory of the second”, meaning a red lion with blue tongue and claws on a yellow field and surrounded by a red double royal tressure flory counter-flory device.

Scottish Heart

Alexa, play "Friend of the Night" by "Mogwai"

“Friend of the Night,” the lead single from Mogwai’s Mr Beast (2006), captures the band at their most accessible and melodic. Centered around a graceful piano motif, the song slowly layers shimmering guitars, strings, and restrained percussion, building into a rich and cinematic swell.

Meet Stephen Snyder – Tech Tutor, Community Champion, and Senior Advocate

Stephen Snyder has a passion for helping seniors stay connected and confident in today’s tech-savvy world. Every Tuesday night, he dedicates his time to teaching our senior community how to use their smartphones, download apps, and stay in touch with loved ones — and he does it all with heart.

Originally from Jesup, Georgia, Stephen is a graduate of SCAD with a diverse professional background. For over a decade, he taught Web and Graphic Design as an associate night professor — not as a job, but as a hobby fueled by passion. His commitment to teaching and giving back has always been part of who he is.

Stephen’s volunteer journey began in Charleston at a local food bank. At the time, he worked with Johnson & Johnson, an insurance MGA that strongly believed in community involvement. The company would shut down operations to allow every employee to participate in Trident United Way’s Day of Caring. It was during those experiences that Stephen realized how much giving back meant to him. “It made me feel phenomenal,” he says.

His inspiration to help seniors with technology stems from a deeply personal place. When his father was diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer’s, Stephen worked hard to make sure his mother had access to technology — not just for communication, but also to help keep her mind sharp through games and connection. After she passed away two years ago, Stephen found himself searching for purpose, asking, “What will be my legacy?”

That answer came when he noticed a sign he had driven past countless times — Legacy at Savannah Quarters. This time, he stopped — and found his calling.

Now a proud neighborhood resident, Stephen spends his Tuesday evenings making a difference, one phone at a time. He loves the no-nonsense, tell-it-like-it-is spirit of the seniors he serves, and he treasures the chance to help them stay connected with loved ones, learn new skills, and most importantly, feel seen.

“Their gratitude and love is better than any salary,” he shares. “And the best part? They always tell me how beautiful my hair is.”

Thank you, Stephen, for the heart, humor, and dedication you bring to our community. We’re lucky to have you at Legacy.

Scotland: The Land Beyond the Wall
When the Roman Empire pushed north into Britannia, it met fierce tribes the legions could never conquer. To mark the limit of their reach, the Romans built Hadrian’s Wall, and further north, the Antonine Wall — yet beyond lay the untamed lands we now call Scotland.

By the 8th century, Scotland began to take shape as a kingdom, often in conflict with its southern neighbor, England. Centuries of wars, heroes like William Wallace, and an enduring sense of independence defined its story. In 1707, Scotland formally united with England, creating Great Britain, which later grew into the United Kingdom alongside Ireland.

Still today, Scotland remains proudly distinct — with its Gaelic roots, tartans, castles, and legendary landscapes reminding the world of a culture that was never fully subdued.

September is National Falls Prevention Awareness Month

Call Before You Fall — Help Is Just a Button (or FOUR words) Away!

Did you know that one in four adults over 65 experiences a fall each year? While many falls are preventable, it’s important to remember: you don’t have to wait until after a fall to get help.

This September, during National Falls Prevention Awareness Month, we want to remind you of one powerful message:

Call Before You Fall!

Whether you’re feeling dizzy, unsteady, or just “not quite right” — don’t try to push through it. Get help before something happens.

💡 You Have Two Easy Ways to Call for Help:

Press Your Pendant: If you’re wearing your medical alert pendant, just press the button. A member of the care team will be alerted immediately, and help will be on the way.

Speak2 Alexa: Simply say,

“Alexa, I need help.”
This voice-activated system alerts staff so they can check on you right away.

It’s that simple — and it can make all the difference.

✅ Fall Prevention Tips:

  • Keep pathways clear — avoid clutter or rugs that can trip you up.
  • Use handrails and grab bars in bathrooms and hallways.
  • Wear sturdy, non-slip shoes (even indoors!).
  • Take your time — no need to rush when standing or walking.
  • Use your walker or cane if it’s been recommended.
  • Stay hydrated and let someone know if you’re feeling off balance.

🧡 We’re Here for You

Your safety is our top priority. Don’t ever feel like you’re “bothering” someone by asking for help. Whether you press your pendant or speak to Alexa, know that support is always just a moment away.

So this month — and every month — remember:

  • Call Before You Fall!
  • Because we’d much rather come check on you before than after.
  • Stay safe and steady!

Apple Pancakes with Cinnamon Butter

Apple pancakes with cinnamon butter

Ingredients:
Cinnamon butter
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, room temperature
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon grated orange peel

Pancakes
2 teaspoons fresh lemon juice
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
2 medium Granny Smith apples (scant 1 pound), peeled, halved, cored
1 2/3 cups all purpose flour
2 tablespoons (packed) golden brown sugar
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
3/4 cup whole milk
2 large eggs
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, melted, divided

Instructions:
For cinnamon butter:
Step 1
Using electric mixer, beat all ingredients in small bowl until blended.

For pancakes:
Step 2
Combine lemon juice and peel in bowl. Coarsely grate apples into bowl, tossing to coat with juice.

Step 3
Whisk flour, brown sugar, baking powder, and salt in large bowl. Make well in center of dry ingredients. Whisk in milk, eggs, and 1/4 cup melted butter until smooth. Stir in apple mixture. Cover and let batter stand at room temperature at least 30 minutes and up to 1 hour.

Step 4
Preheat oven to 250°F. Place baking sheet in oven. Heat heavy large nonstick griddle or skillet over medium-high heat 1 minute. Brush griddle with some of remaining 1/4 cup melted butter. For each pancake, drop 1 heaping tablespoon batter onto griddle, spacing pancakes apart. Cook until golden on bottom and bubbles start to form on surface, about 3 minutes. Turn pancakes over. Cook until golden on bottom, about 2 minutes longer. Transfer pancakes to baking sheet in oven to keep warm. Repeat with remaining batter, brushing griddle with butter before each batch of pancakes.

Step 5
Arrange pancakes on plates. Top each with dollop of cinnamon butter and serve.

Resident of the Month

Beverley Stephenson

Beverley was born and raised in Spartanburg, SC. Except for a few years in North Carolina and Virginia, she spent most of her adult life in Spartanburg as well. She graduated from Spartanburg High School and went on to earn her nursing degree at Spartanburg Regional Hospital School of Nursing, where she made several life-long friends. While completing some of her core classes at Wofford College, she met her husband, Matt. She worked at Mary Black Hospital and the Spartanburg Nursing Home facility for many years.

She has a daughter, Deborah, and a son, Matthew, along with four grandsons and eight great-grandchildren. As her children and grandchildren grew up, she loved watching them play sports and was always cheering them on at baseball, basketball, football games, and swim meets. As empty nesters, she and Matt enjoyed hiking in the mountains of North Carolina and taking trips to the beach.

Beverley was also very active in her quilting guild, attending many retreats to perfect her skills. She has created beautiful quilts for family members that are cherished keepsakes. Several smaller quilt squares are displayed in her room, always drawing compliments.

Matt and Beverley were married for 51 years before his passing. She later moved to Georgia to be closer to her daughter and joined Legacy at Savannah Quarters in December 2024. Her caring nature remains strong, as she is always ready to help other residents when needed. She stays positive with a smile on her face and enjoys spending time with her family while taking advantage of all the activities Legacy offers—especially those involving crafts and food.

Congratulations, Ms. Beverley!
