The Language of Touch
The ingenious system of raised dots that are “read” through the fingertips by the blind is known as braille and is named for Frenchman Louis Braille. As a student, Braille loved to read and craved a wider variety of books. His mission was to create a new alphabet for the blind, and at age 15, he developed braille. January 4, World Braille Day, celebrates his achievement and his birthday.
Braille based his alphabet on a military code developed by Captain Charles Barbier de la Serre for Napolean’s army as a way for soldiers to communicate at night. Braille quickly mastered the system, discovered its flaws, and developed a new one. When he presented his improvements to Barbier, the old army captain was offended. But history has proven Braille’s contribution to be as important as Gutenberg’s printing press.
Christ The Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer, colossal statue of Jesus Christ at the summit of Mount Corcovado, Rio de Janeiro, southeastern Brazil. Celebrated in traditional and popular songs, Corcovado towers over Rio de Janeiro, Brazil’s principal port city. The statue of Christ the Redeemer was completed in 1931 and stands 98 feet (30 metres) tall, its horizontally outstretched arms spanning 92 feet (28 metres). The statue has become emblematic of both the city of Rio de Janeiro and the whole nation of Brazil.
In the 1850s the Vincentian priest Pedro Maria Boss suggested placing a Christian monument on Mount Corcovado to honour Isabel, princess regent of Brazil and the daughter of Emperor Pedro II, although the project was never approved. In 1921 the Roman Catholic archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro proposed that a statue of Christ be built on the 2,310-foot (704-metre) summit, which, because of its commanding height, would make it visible from anywhere in Rio. Citizens petitioned Pres. Epitácio Pessoa to allow the construction of the statue on Mount Corcovado.

Recipe of the month:
Brazilian Abará
Ingredients:
• 3 Teacups of black-eyed peas, peeled
• 3 Large onions
• ½ Teacup of dried shrimps, peeled
• ½ Teacup of dendê oil
• Salt to taste
• 6 Banana leaves, for wrapping
Directions:
Allow the peas to soak in cold water for at least 12 hours. Drain the peas and blend them in a food processor with the onion, dried shrimp, red palm oil, and salt, until obtaining a smooth paste. Cut the banana leaves in half and pass them through the stove’s low flame, to make them more flexible. Hold out the leaf with your hand and, right at the center, arrange three spoonfuls of abará batter. Close carefully, making sure all the batter is wrapped, and steam for 5 minutes. When it is firm, remove the leaf and serve with vatapá, dried shrimp, vinaigrette, and pepper sauce.
