Memory Care Innovations

The term ‘dementia’ describes progressive disorders affecting the brain such as Alzheimer’s disease, vascular dementia and dementia with Lewy bodies. These conditions present problems with thinking, mood, behavior, and the ability to take part in everyday activity and leisure.

If no suitable activities are provided and people living with dementia have nothing to do, they might become increasingly isolated, frustrated, bored and unhappy. However, choosing the most suitable type of activity for people in the mid to late stages of the disease is challenging. Given those people may not be able to participate in hobbies enjoyed in the past, it may be the sensory side of that activity that needs to be supported.

Sensory activities may also provide a level of stimulation, which increases awareness and attention due to the simplicity of the task. Matching the sensory demand of the activity with a well-designed environment will help the person with dementia to take part.

Clinical Corner

With the weather upon us, here are some tips for seniors and whole families to stay healthy …

1. Stay Hydrated
Staying hydrated is essential year-round, but it’s especially critical during winter. Cold weather can be deceptively dry, leading to dehydration. Remember to drink plenty of water and other hydrating drinks like herbal leaves or warm soups to promote overall senior winter wellness from the inside out.

2. Boost your immunity with nutritious foods.
One of the most important winter health tips for seniors is to focus on food quality. Consume nutrient-rich foods that give your immune system a boost. Include the following foods in your senior winter wellness diet plan:

Citrus fruits, rich in immune-boosting vitamin C Berries, chock full of antioxidants that protect cells from damage Garlic, which has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties Ginger, which may help soothe sore throats and reduce inflammation Turmeric, which promotes strong joints and immune function Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi, which promote a healthy gut Leafy greens like spinach, high in vitamin C and folate Nuts, which have a variety of antioxidants, vitamins, protein, and fiber Green tea, loaded with polyphenols that boost the immune system Lean proteins, especially fatty fish high in omega-3s

3. Plan social outings for senior winter wellness
Maintaining social connections is one of the most fundamental winter health tips for seniors. Regular social activities help fight off feelings of loneliness and depression. Whether it’s a stroll in the park, a visit to a local museum, or visiting with a friend, social outings provide fun, laughter, and a change of scenery to your senior winter wellness routine.

Historical December Moments

December 1, 1955 – The birth of the modern American civil rights movement occurred as Rosa Parks was arrested in Montgomery, Alabama, for refusing to give up her seat to a white man and move to the back section of a municipal bus. Her arrest resulted in a year-long boycott of the city bus system by African Americans and led to legal actions ending racial segregation on municipal buses throughout the South.

December 7, 1941 – The U.S. Naval base at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, was attacked by nearly 200 Japanese aircraft in a raid that lasted just over one hour and left nearly 3,000 Americans dead. On this day we remember Pearl Harbor.

December 10– Poet Emily Dickinson (1830-1886) was born in Amherst, Massachusetts. Her poetry became known only after her death when her sister discovered nearly 2,000 poems locked in her bureau, written on the backs of envelopes and scraps of paper. They were published gradually over the next 50 years, beginning in 1890.

December 16, 1773– The Boston Tea Party occurred as colonial activists disguised as Mohawk Indians boarded British ships anchored in Boston Harbor and dumped 342 containers of expensive tea into the water.

December 21st – Winter begins in the Northern Hemisphere. In the Southern Hemisphere today is the beginning of summer.

December 27, 1831 – Charles Darwin set out from Plymouth, England, aboard the ship HMS Beagle on his five-year global scientific expedition. Darwin collected fossils and studied plants and animals, gradually beginning to doubt that many diverse species of living things had sprung into existence at one moment (creationism). In 1859, he published On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection.

Recipe Spotlight:

4 Ingredient Apple Turnovers

four-ingredients-apple-turnovers

Ingredients:
1 sheet ready-rolled puff pastry defrosted
125 ml (1/2 cup) unsweetened apple sauce
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 Tablespoons milk

Directions:
Pre-heat the oven to 220C (200C fan forced).
Line a tray with baking paper and set aside.
Cut the puff pastry in half with a sharp knife.
Cut each pastry half again into thirds. You should now have six pieces of pastry.
Mix the applesauce and ground cinnamon together.
Divide the spiced applesauce equally between three of the pastry pieces. Spread the sauce down the center of each pastry piece, leaving a 1 cm border around the edge of the pastry.
Brush the border around the edge of the pastry with the milk.
Place a second piece of pastry gently on top of the applesauce, carefully lining up the edges.
Press the edges of the pastry together firmly with a fork to seal.
Place the turnover on the lined baking tray. Repeat with the other two turnovers.
Mix the sugar and extra cinnamon together in a small bowl.
Brush the tops of the turnovers with milk.
Sprinkle over the cinnamon sugar.
Bake the turnovers for 10 minutes.
Reduce the oven temperature to 180C.
Continue to cook for a further 5 minutes, or until the turnovers are well risen and golden brown.
Serve warm with cream or ice cream.
