English Heart
Alexa play "Cello Song" from "Nick Drake"
Delicate, melancholic, and deeply English, featured on his debut album Five Leaves Left, “Cello Song” from 1969, captures Nick Drake’s quiet brilliance. With virtuous fingerpicked guitar, a mournful cello, and poetic lyrics, it evokes misty mornings and introspective solitude. Though underappreciated in his lifetime, Drake’s music now echoes as a timeless emblem of true British folk.
Around the World with Atlas - England

This month in our Around the World with Atlas, we’re packing our imaginations and heading across the pond to explore the historic and picturesque land of England—a country rich with castles, tea, tradition, and timeless beauty. So settle in, relax, and let us take you on a journey through cobblestone streets, lush countryside, and iconic landmarks—all from the comfort of your favorite chair.
England is known for its afternoon tea—a lovely tradition of sipping tea with small sandwiches, scones, and sweet treats. Join us as we have our own afternoon tea this month!
Some of you may remember watching the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth II in 1953, or perhaps listening to The Beatles on the radio in the 1960s. England has always had a special connection to American culture through music, fashion, and even television.
Be on the look out for our many activities highlighted in grey that focus on the country of England!
Welcome to England
Around the World with Atlas
England’s story begins long before it was called by that name—when Celtic Britons inhabited its misty hills and Roman legions reached the edge of their empire in a land they called Britannia. Though Rome left its mark with roads, baths, and Hadrian’s Wall, the far north—home to fierce tribes and enigmatic druids—remained unconquered. After the Romans withdrew, waves of Saxon settlers shaped a new identity, giving birth to a nation where myth and history often blur.
At the heart of this early tapestry is the legend of King Arthur, the once and future king said to have united Britain with the help of Merlin the wizard, the sword Excalibur, and the noble Knights of the Round Table. Whether myth or memory, these tales reveal England’s deep-rooted fascination with destiny, honor, and the magic of storytelling—traditions that would shape its greatest literary voices.
From the poetic grandeur of Shakespeare to the epic realms of J.R.R. Tolkien and the modern wizarding world of J.K. Rowling, English literature has enchanted readers across centuries. And in music, few countries have left such a global imprint. With sounds ranging from the rebellious rock of The Rolling Stones to the dreamscapes of Pink Floyd, and the timeless genius of The Beatles and David Bowie, England’s cultural output is as powerful and enduring as its history.
August is Happiness Happens Month
August is Happiness Happens Month—a time to celebrate the simple joys in life and focus on what makes us feel good, inside and out. While happiness means something different to each of us, one thing is clear: it’s never too late to embrace joy, connection, and purpose.
For many seniors, happiness isn’t about big adventures or grand achievements—it’s found in the little moments. A warm cup of coffee in the morning. A good conversation with a friend. The laughter of a grandchild. A favorite song that brings back memories. These small joys add up to something truly meaningful.
Studies show that people who focus on happiness often experience better sleep, improved memory, and even a stronger immune system. Joyful living supports overall wellness—and that’s something to smile about! Whether it’s a short walk outdoors, reminiscing over old photos, or participating in group activities, making time for things you enjoy is a powerful way to stay healthy and hopeful.
Ways to Spark Joy This Month
Gratitude: Each day, think of one thing you’re thankful for. Write it down or share it with a friend.
Music: Listen to songs from your favorite decade. Music has a special way of bringing joy and memories together.
Movement: Gentle stretching or a short walk can release tension and lift your mood.
Laughter: Watch a funny movie, tell a joke, or recall a humorous moment from your past.
Many of the activities we offer here at the Goldton we hope spark joy in our residents each and every day. I know they spark joy in our staff!

Recipe Spotlight
Blueberry Scone
Ingredients
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest (from 1 medium lemon)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for shaping
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw, about 5 1/2 ounces)
1 cup cold heavy cream
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted if lumpy
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1/2 medium lemon)
Instructions
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest and 1/3 cup granulated sugar in a large bowl and rub the zest into the sugar with your fingers until fragrant. Whisk in 2 cups all-purpose flour and 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder.
Grate 1 stick cold unsalted butter on the large holes of a box grater directly into the flour mixture. Toss with your hands to incorporate the butter into the flour, breaking up any large flakes of butter. Add 1 1/4 cups blueberries and toss to combine.
Measure out 1 cup cold heavy cream in a liquid measuring cup, add 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and stir until the salt is dissolved. Drizzle over the flour mixture and stir with a flexible spatula until the cream is absorbed. Gather into a ball and place on a work surface lightly dusted with flour. Gather and firmly pat the dough to incorporate all the loose flour and form a cohesive mass.
Pat the dough into a 1-inch-thick-round about 7 inches wide. Cut into 8 wedges. Transfer the wedges to the baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart. Freeze while the oven heats, about 15 minutes. Heat the oven to 400°F.
Bake until light golden-brown, 22 to 25 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely, about 30 minutes.
Whisk 1/2 cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice together in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled scones in a zigzag pattern and let sit until the glaze hardens, about 15 minutes.
