Resident of the Month

Cindy Gibson

Hey ya’ll,

It has been such a joy meeting and befriending all of you!!!! Your travels, backgrounds, and lives have fascinated and entertained me. I’ve felt especially blessed by those of who you have been in the military or the spouse or child of a military man or woman because I am an Air Force brat! I have also fallen in love with our wonderful staff here at The Oscar!

I was born at Patrick Air Force Base in Cocoa Beach, Florida in December of 1953. Before I was even two years old, my mother, two older sisters and I joined my dad who was transferred to Wiesbaden, Germany (sister number 4 born). Following that, we were transferred to Tucson, AZ; Mather AFB in Sacramento, CA; multiple bases in England (sister number 5 born); back to Germany (Darmstadt this time as my dad was a sportswriter with Stars and Stripes), then retirement from Forbes AFB in Topeka, KS.

Then, my crazy adult life began! I lived in San Antonio, TX; Phoenix/Tempe, AZ; College Station, TX (picked up a BS in Biomedical Science and an MBA from Texas A&M); Grand Prairie, TX; Houston, TX; back to San Antonio and Selma, TX; Stillwater, OK (picked up a doctorate in Higher Education/College Teaching and Administration); Penn Yan, NY; Anderson, IN; Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada; Bellingham, WA; Singapore; multiple places in Utah including Moab (great hiking); and retired to New Braunfels, TX in 2020. Why did I travel so much? Well, I was divorced after 16 years with two small boys and had to start a new career. So I went back to school to get my doctorate and then began my career as a college professor of Business. To increase my salary, I kept moving from small colleges to large universities. The Singapore gig was after both my boys had graduated high school and to quench my thirst for an international posting! I have taught at Texas State University, Oklahoma State University, Keuka College (New York), Anderson

University (Indiana), Trinity Western University (British Columbia), Kaplan University (Singapore), and Utah State University.

Since settling in New Braunfels, I have spent many hours with my four grandchildren, all of whom you will probably meet! Many of you have already met Everett, the oldest at age 12. Then there are his brothers Cooper (10) and Cord (8), and Zamorah about to turn 7.

Some of you have wondered why I moved to a retirement-type home at 72. I have had some weird health problems since returning to Texas, and then I fell and broke my patella and suffered some permanent complications and impairments in that leg. Truthfully, I just want someone to take care of me, especially since I hate to cook!!! I decided it’s better for me to “age in place” while I can still be active and enjoy people and life than to wait until I’m older when a move might be more difficult for me. Honestly, I admire all of you who have made this change at an older age—you are very brave and resilient! I have made it my mission to sit with every single one of you at a meal and get to know you all! God bless you!
