Calling all Bingo Lovers
Bingo is celebrated throughout December in church halls and community centers because December is Bingo Month. The game dates all the way back to 1530, when Italians played a game called Lo Gioco del Lotto d’Italia. Some even say that this game was used to fight government corruption. Instead of winning a pot of money, those holding winning numbers were elected as local leaders.
The French first introduced a playing card full of numbers. Then in the 1800s, the Germans used the game as a tool to teach children math and spelling. It first appeared in America in 1929 at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia, where it was
called “Beano.” When an excited winner shouted out the word bingo by mistake, an entrepreneur named Edwin S. Lowe overheard the faux pas, renamed the game, and employed a Columbia University mathematician named Carl Leffler to create 6,000 randomly numbered bingo cards. Leffler purportedly went insane from the task. A Catholic priest asked Lowe to show him the game as a way of raising money for the church. Bingo has been a church hall mainstay ever since.
As we all know here we love our bingo! It is one of our most popular activities here at the Goldton! Check your activity calendar for times and days!
Discovering National Parks- Glacier
This month we are exploring Glacier National Park, located in northwest Montana. Glacier NP is a vast park renowned for its dramatic alpine scenery including towering peaks, turquoise lakes, dense forests, and numerous glaciers, which are the namesake of the park; it’s often called “The Crown of the Continent” and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, famous for its scenic Going-to-the-Sun Road and offering a variety of hiking trails through diverse ecosystems, making it a prime destination for outdoor enthusiasts.
Evidence of human use in this area dates back to over 10,000 years. By the time the first European explorers came into this region, several different tribes inhabited the area. The Blackfeet Indians controlled the vast prairies east of the mountains, while the Salish and Kootenai Indians lived in the western valleys, traveling over the mountains in search of game and to hunt the great herds of buffalo on the eastern plains.
The majority of early European explorers came to this area in search of beaver and other pelts. They were soon followed by miners and, eventually, settlers looking for land. By 1891, the completion of the Great Northern Railway sealed the area’s fate, allowing a greater number of people to enter into the heart of northwest Montana. Homesteaders settled in the valleys west of Marias Pass and soon small towns developed.
Around the turn of the century, people started to look at the land differently. For some, this place held more than minerals to mine or land to farm…they began to recognize that the area had a unique scenic beauty all to its own.
By the late 1800s, influential leaders like George Bird Grinnell, pushed for the creation of a national park. In 1910, Grinnell and others saw their efforts rewarded when President Taft signed the bill establishing Glacier as the country’s 10th national park.
Please check the activity calendar for activities featuring this national park.

The iconic symbol of Glacier National Park is the mountain goat. This young goat is just learning to scamper around the rocky cliffs in the park.
Around the World with Atlas
We have had so much fun this year exploring our national parks! We have done crafts, tried new foods, watched breathtaking documentaries and learned so many things about the history, ecosystems and the future of our these spectacular sites in our very own country. It is now time to explore even further. We are excited to announce that starting in January we will be starting Around the World with Atlas! Each month we will explore a new country! With these activities we will immerse ourselves in the culture, the history, the foods and beverages and explore and travel right here from our very own home.
