National Assisted Living Week

National Assisted Living Week, 2024

The National Center for Assisted Living was established in 1995 and begins on Grandparents Day. We honor the people who live and work in Assisted Living Facilities and recognize the role of those who care for all the residents of ‘The Goldton at Spring Hill’. Here at the Goldton, we will have fun dressing up in different decades; Monday starts with dressing like we are back in the 1920s. Each day we will have exciting activities that celebrate the Theme of this year’s National Assisted Living Week, “Inspiring Generations”. We will end the week with a BANG! Mayor Jim will be here with his band, “Bad Dog” and perform for all of you! A flyer will be going out, explaining each activity. We all hope everyone will participate in this fun week. Some of the activities include staff, so we need everyone to be part of all the fun.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Rocky Mountain National Park’s 415 square miles (265,807 acres) encompasses a spectacular range of mountain environments. From meadows found in the montane life zone to glistening alpine lakes and up to the towering mountain peaks, there is something for everyone to discover.

National Healthy Aging Month

National Healthy Aging Month

September is National Healthy Aging Month. There will be a presentation on September 6th at 1:15 pm up in the Mezzanine, regarding this fun and interesting topic. There are many articles and scientific research written about aging and how you can live more healthily. I wanted to, in this article tie “healthy Aging” to being positive and getting out and spending time with everyone in our Goldton Community. There is a study by the ‘National Institute on Aging’, showing that loneliness and social isolation are associated with higher risks for health problems such as heart disease, depression, and cognitive decline. We all can try each day to do something that we enjoy. When you immerse yourself in things you enjoy, you can’t wait to do them again. And then you do them again and again and again, and the enjoyment continues. Try working at friendships. Friendships are fuel, providing energy, and love and feeding your emotions. You’re never too old for new friendships. Lastly, if you still are not feeling it, and think there is nothing you like and want to do – then do something you don’t like; try out an activity, go out to eat, or ride along with everyone on the bus. You never know, you might just have a good time!

Andrew Jackson's Home

Andrew Jackson's Home

Andrew Jackson purchased the land in Hermitage Tennessee in 1804 when he was forced to sell his larger farm and home due to financial debts. They first lived in a log cabin and then a larger home was built in 1821, which reflected Jackson’s success. Rachel, his wife, died unexpectedly in 1828, just weeks before Jackson became president. Two years later the home was almost completely destroyed by fire. A new home was built and completed in 1837 and remained in the family until Andrew Jackson the 3rd moved out in 1893. The Ladies Hermitage Association then took over the mansion and its grounds, opening it as a museum restored to its 1837 appearance, and 80% of its furnishings are original. It’s the second oldest presidential museum in America; only Mount Vernon is older.

Resident of the Month

Maryanne Hartley

Maryanne Hartley, Resident of the Month, September 2024 | The Goldton at Spring Hill

Maryanne spent the first 40 years in Westerly Rhode Island. She loved her small town, and going roller-skating was one of her favorite things to do. Maryanne met her husband when she was 16 years old, their families knew each other, which is easy to do in a small town. They married when Maryanne turned 18, and they had five children. She was always busy and active, a dedicated mom to her five children, helping at her church, and she had a job at a small family Pharmacy where she was a Pharmacy Tech. Her husband got a job in Textiles as a manager in North Carolina, so the entire family moved Edenton NC. Maryanne stayed active, returning to school to get her GED, and then college classes at a local community College. Maryanne also worked at another pharmacy for six years. After her husband retired, they traveled, making great memories by doing a road trip across the United States. They knew friends in other states, so they visited many of them along the way. Another great memory was when Maryanne’s Children planned an amazing 50th Wedding Anniversary for her and her husband. The family and a few friends all stayed in a huge cabin up in the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee. After her husband passed away, Maryanne lived in North Carolina for 5 more years. Then, her youngest daughter asked her to move to Spring Hill TN. She lived in an apartment for a few months, then her daughter found The Goldton! Maryanne has been here for two years, and she says she loves it and feels safe. She says the staff is fabulous and is caring. You will see Maryanne at exercise, documentaries, socials, Mexican Train, Bingo, and of course walking cute Annie. Thank you Maryanne for being a great friend to all the residents. Thank you for staying active here, you contribute so much to the Goldton Community.

Recipe Spotlight:

Beignets & Berries

Ingredients:

  • 1/4 cup butter, room temperature
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons warm water (120° to 130°), divided
  • 1/2 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 package (1/4 ounce) quick-rise yeast
  • 1 large egg
  • 3-1/4 to 3-3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • Oil for deep-fat frying
  • Confectioners’ sugar
  • Berries and whipped topping, optional

Directions:
Beat butter, sugar, salt and cinnamon until crumbly. Beat in 1/2 cup water and evaporated milk. In another bowl, dissolve yeast in remaining 2 tablespoons water; add to milk mixture. Beat in egg until blended.

Add 2 cups flour; mix until well blended. Stir in enough remaining flour to form a soft dough (dough will be sticky). Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover; refrigerate 4 hours or overnight.

Bring dough to room temperature. On a floured surface, roll dough into a 16×12-in. rectangle. Cut into 2-in. squares. In a deep cast-iron skillet or deep- fat fryer, heat oil to 375°. Drop beignets, a few at a time, into hot oil. Fry until golden brown, about 1 minute per side. Drain on paper towels. Dust with confectioners’ sugar. If desired, serve with assorted berries and whipped topping.
