Memory Care Highlights For December

Memory Care Highlights For December

Hello everyone, there are a lot of fun things taking place in our Memory Care Community in December. Around the first of the month, you will see an Angel Tree. This tree will have an angel for each resident in Memory Care and on that angel will be a list of 3 things that resident might like to have for Christmas. Please feel free to visit Memory Care and take an angel if you are able or choose to. I do ask that you please purchase at least one of the three things on the resident’s wish list. Later in the month we will have a Christmas Party with Santa arriving and passing out those gifts. This will also be for our Memory Care family to get together for our favorite desserts, coffee, and hot chocolate Please see me, Pam Holt Activities Coordinator, MC for further details and instructions. Also on December 11 around 3 pm will be having a party provided by the Thompson Station Middle School Cheerleaders. They will be coming to party and spend some time with our residents. Please watch our calendar in Memory Care for dates and times of upcoming activities. Hope to see you there.

A Great Holiday Season

Christmas time is different for everyone, but everyone deserves a wonderful Christmas. Many of you have good memories of Christmas with family, making and eating good food, giving and receiving gifts, and the hustle and bustle of the busy time of year. Now things are much more simple, some do not have many to visit and spend time with this Christmas. But making the best of the holiday season is crucial if you still want to make fun holiday memories, If you will be going out to see family, don’t stress, enjoy yourself, pay attention to all that is going on and said, feel blessed for all the love you feel for the people who are there with you at the moment. Back at the Goldton, try hard to come to our Christmas recitals, many of the children performing have worked hard to prepare to come and sing or play for you. Make it a priority to attend more activities this month – spending time with others will give you a sense of belonging. Spending the holidays alone can be depressing, and even for those who have family, you can find it stressful or difficult. You are loved here at The Goldton, so come out, see what others are doing, and maybe play a game, everyone can play Bingo! I can’t wait to spend more time with YOU this Christmas season!

Glacier
National Park

The iconic symbol of Glacier National Park is the mountain goat. This young goat is just learning to scamper around the rocky cliffs in the park.

Bears at Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is renowned for its stunning landscapes and diverse wildlife, including a significant population of bears. The park is home to both black bears and grizzly bears, which inhabit various ecosystems ranging from dense forests to alpine meadows. Visitors to the park often have the opportunity to observe these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat, particularly during the warmer months when they are more active. The bears play a crucial role in the park’s ecosystem, contributing to the balance of flora and fauna through their foraging and feeding behaviors. There are nearly 1,000 bears in Glacier National Park, with around 600 black bears and 300 grizzlies living within the gates. Don’t rely on color to tell them apart – grizzlies can be black and black bears can be blonde. Their distinguishing features can be found in their snout and back. Grizzlies have a hump between their shoulders and rounded “dished” face. Black bears have a longer snout and bigger ears. Male grizzlies can be up to twice as large as a male black bear, (up to 661 lbs.). Bears are opportunistic omnivores and eat what is available nearby. While their relatives in Alaska are famous for catching fresh salmon, Glacier bears primarily eat vegetation, such as berries, flowering plants, roots, and grasses, along with the occasional small rodent, weakened animal, or other meat source.

Resident of the Month

Estelle Lyons

Estelle was born in Main, but just 13 days later the family moved to El Paso Texas. The family moved a lot because her dad was career Air Force. They moved so much that Estelle almost had a new school she had to attend each year. She did come to Tennessee when she was in 4th grade. They lived in Smyrna on 92 acres and got to ride horses. Moving a lot was a different way to grow up, but she has many positive memories. One thing Estelle loved about being in various states, was the chance to experience all the different cultures each state brought. Estelle has six siblings so that adds some fun to the mix as well. She said it was quite the experience traveling with the nine of them in a tight-fitting station wagon. There are only positive stories with all her siblings. Since they moved so much, they had to stick together and support each other. With six siblings, there was always someone for something. A sister was there to be a shoulder to cry on, another was there to help with the school bully, and so on. Estelle says family is the most important thing! They moved a lot but she knew that “Home is where the family is”. After high school, she moved to Austin Texas with her husband where they lived on the campus of The University of Texas. She ended up moving a lot as an adult too, but stayed in the southwest until her job brought her to Tennessee in 2005 where they settled in to stay. To this day family is still number one for Estelle. She has three amazing daughters and seven grandkids that she loves so much! Estelle’s recent move is to the Goldton of course. She needed to find assistance after a severe auto accident where she lost her husband. She says that at the Goldton, she has found a new addition to her family, and she is happy to be here. She looks forward to getting to know more of the residents better. And we can’t wait to get to know Estelle better! We are blessed to have her here. Estelle is a kind soul that is nothing but sweet to everyone. Welcome Estelle, we are glad you are here!

Traditional Scones

traditional-scones.jpg

Ingredients:
1 Egg
2 heaped teaspoons – Baking Powder
25 grams – Caster Sugar
1 heaped teaspoon – Vanilla Sugar (or caster sugar)
25 grams – Vegetable Shortening (or lard)
500 grams – Plain Flour
1 teaspoon – Salt (fine)
50 grams – Butter (unsalted)
250 milliliters – Heavy Whipping Cream (or double cream)
250 milliliters – Full Cream Milk
1 tablespoon – Milk

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F) and place a baking tray inside to warm. Mix flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a bowl. Add butter and lard (or shortening), blending until it resembles damp sand. Gradually add milk, mixing until the dough just comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.

Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 3 cm (1 inch) thick. Cut scones with a round cutter, reshaping the dough gently if needed. Place scones close together on a baking tray. Brush with egg wash (beaten egg and milk). Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden. Check doneness with a thermometer (center should reach 85°C/185°F). Serve warm or at room temperature with Chantilly cream and strawberry jam.

Chantilly Cream: Whisk cream and sugar until soft peaks form.

Kristy Current

I was born in southern California, but have spent most of my life here in Tennessee. I live at home with my boyfriend Chad who I share two daughters with. I have four beautiful children, two boys, Brendan who is 25 and owns his own business, and Logan who is 21 and in his third year at UT Knoxville. My two girls Brooklynn, who is 14, and Camilla who is 11. I am very proud of my children. They are my life! I love being a mom. I have been a licensed cosmetologist for 13 years and love all things hair and make-up, nails, and beauty. After the pandemic and taking care of my grandma, I was led to caregiving and have been doing that since then.
