Resident of the Month
Vivian Holmes
We honor Vivian Holmes as our October resident of the month at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains. Vivian has lived at Sandy Plains since 2022. She has three children, seven grandchildren and six great grandchildren. Her daughter, Belinda lives close by, and visits Vivian regularly as does her great grandson, Hunter, who joins her for Bingo and other fun activities.
Vivian lived in Marietta for six years before moving to our community and was in Jacksonville, Florida prior to her move to Georgia. She was married to John Holmes for 40 years.
She is an accomplished seamstress and made her daughter’s outfits, many fun costumes, drapes, and bedding. Vivian also worked in a factory making gowns. Her love for animals brought her to work as a receptionist in an animal hospital.
Her daughter, Belinda says “she knows how to have a good time.” We agree, she always has a smile for everyone and loves to dress up for our special events days. When we had hat day a few weeks back, Vivian went the extra mile and wore a sunflower hat! Last October she represented our community at the Johnson Ferry Baptist Church’s Magnolia Ball. She showed up in a gorgeous outfit and outshined everyone at our table. Vivian has an amazing sense of style and it’s a joy to see her engaging smile and enjoy her gracious presence. Thank you, Vivian, for being such a beautiful person and for spreading such happiness to our residents and staff at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains. We celebrate you this October!

Incredible Health Benefits of Pet Therapy
Pets are more than just fun and adorable friends. Research shows significant social, emotional, and overall health benefits for seniors who have a furry pal by their side. It’s effective in helping seniors with symptoms of depression and anxiety. It also appears to be particularly effective for those with dementia or Alzheimer’s disease, as well as those struggling with a mental illness. Animal therapy can reduce feelings of loneliness in seniors providing a source of support and comfort. They can also improve mental stimulation and provide meaning.
For these reasons, animals are an integral part of our engagement program at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains. We are so grateful to Cornerstone Hospice for the weekly visits from volunteer Carry and her beautiful and loving Golden Retriever, Luna. Luna makes time for all our residents in our Assisted Living and Spirit (Memory Care) Neighborhoods. She will even make house calls to residents in their apartments. We now have a sweet senior dog, Lily, who lives at our community with a new resident. Last month we were treated to a visit by two therapy ponies thanks to the generosity of Cornerstone Hospice. This was truly an amazing event for our residents and staff, resident comments included “Best Activity Ever”.

Associate of the Month
Shaunelle Furch
We honor Shaunelle, our Med Tech in our Spirit Neighborhood, as our Associate of the month for October. This October she will celebrate three years at Sandy Plains. She moved to Marietta from Tulsa, Oklahoma. She enjoys putting smiles on people’s faces and it is evident in her commitment to our residents and by the stellar care she provides for them. Shaunelle also enjoys having fun with our residents. One of her favorite activities is to play volleyball with the residents. It’s a joy to walk in our Spirit Neighborhood and find her in a circle with the residents laughing and smiling and having a great time. She is an advocate for creating an interactive courtyard for the residents and has asked for a fruit tree to be planted for them to enjoy and have fresh fruit.
She has ten years’ experience in the care field. Her advice to a new staff person or someone starting out in this career is to have patience, be a team player and have integrity. All great advice and Shaunelle exemplifies all three of these traits by being an exceptional role model. Her immediate response on her walkie is “how may I help you?” All of us at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains appreciate her dedication, expertise and can-do attitude and yes, Shaunelle we will be planting a fruit tree in the Spirit Courtyard!
