Resident of the Month
James Duvlaris
Congratulations to our November Resident of the Month James Duvlaris. James, who goes by Jimmy has been a member of our Sandy Plains at Legacy Ridge community since last Fall. He is a long-time resident of Marietta, Georgia and he and his wife owned and ran the iconic and popular “Jimmy the Greeks” Restaurant located on the Marietta Square for 32 years.
When Jimmy graduated from Marietta High School he was drafted and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was introduced to his beautiful wife, Mary by his future mother-in-law while in Florida. They married and he finished his Army career in Louisville, Kentucky. Afterwards they moved back to Marietta, and he worked with his father in the restaurant business. In 1976 he and his wife opened “Jimmy the Greeks” Restaurant in Marietta.
Jimmy has three grown children, two daughters and one son. All worked in the family business, graduated from college and are all successful. He has seven grandchildren and both he and wife, Mary, are proud of all of them.
We are delighted Jimmy has chosen our community for his home and as we celebrate Veterans Day this month, we also want to thank him for his valor and service to our country. We honor James Duvlaris our November Resident of the Month at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains.

A Surprising Key to Healthy Aging: Strong Social Connections
There’s no healthy aging “magic bullet”-no single exercise, food, or pill that can guarantee a long healthy life. But there may be something that comes close: strong social connections. According to Amit A. Shah M.D., a geriatrician, internist and palliative care specialist at the Mayo Clinic.
“People are often surprised by the literature that shows a correlation between social contact and enormous health benefits,” Dr. Shah adds, “Interacting with others is exercise for your brain—it’s one of the best ways to improve your cognitive flexibility. It’s likely more beneficial than doing crossword puzzles or other brain games.”
We believe strongly in creating strong social connections with our residents from the moment they join our community and getting them involved in our diverse and extensive activity program.

Community Connections with Churches… True Blessings for Sandy Plains
We are blessed at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains to have strong partnerships with several community churches. We are so grateful to Transfiguration Catholic Church for coming to Sandy Plains twice a month to host a Bible Study group for our Catholic residents. We also have a monthly nondenominational Bible Study with Chaplain Joe from Cornerstone Hospice. Johnson Ferry Baptist Church has supported us with beautiful music from their choir and their crochet club made cozy blankets for every single resident and last month we were invited to their Magnolia Ball. This is an annual event for all senior communities in the Atlanta area. We filled up two tables and Vivian Holmes, one of our cherished residents, was honored at this event. The First Presbyterian Church of Marietta’s Outreach Ministry has brought amazing musical performances to our community featuring the piano, violin, bells and vocal performances. It truly is like having Broadway and Carnegie Hall perform at Sandy Plains. We are so appreciative of your kindness, talents and support.
