Resident of the Month
Martha Lovich
Congratulations to our November Resident of the Month James Duvlaris. James, who goes by Jimmy has been a member of our Sandy Plains at Legacy Ridge community since last Fall. He is a long-time resident of Marietta, Georgia and he and his wife owned and ran the iconic and popular “Jimmy the Greeks” Restaurant located on the Marietta Square for 32 years.
When Jimmy graduated from Marietta High School he was drafted and served in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was introduced to his beautiful wife, Mary by his future mother-in-law while in Florida. They married and he finished his Army career in Louisville, Kentucky. Afterwards they moved back to Marietta, and he worked with his father in the restaurant business. In 1976 he and his wife opened “Jimmy the Greeks” Restaurant in Marietta.
Jimmy has three grown children, two daughters and one son. All worked in the family business, graduated from college and are all successful. He has seven grandchildren and both he and wife, Mary, are proud of all of them.
We are delighted Jimmy has chosen our community for his home and as we celebrate Veterans Day this month, we also want to thank him for his valor and service to our country. We honor James Duvlaris our November Resident of the Month at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains.

Let’s Make The Holidays Shine at Sandy Plains
The holidays can be a difficult time for older adults. The holidays can make them more aware of the passing of time and the absence of loved ones. They may also be experiencing a loss of independence, loss of mobility and separation from family and friends.
We are committed at Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains to make this Holiday Season one that is joyful, spiritual and memorable for all our residents. We will be encouraging our residents to participate in activities that are meaningful, build and enjoy social connections with other residents, participate in our exercise classes that are offered Monday through Friday. Our Dining Director, Joe Chenot, will be preparing healthy and delicious meals to boost mental and cognitive health.
Together we can make our 2024 Holidays Merry and Bright!

Recipe Spotlight:
Traditional Scones
Ingredients:
1 Egg
2 heaped teaspoons – Baking Powder
25 grams – Caster Sugar
1 heaped teaspoon – Vanilla Sugar (or caster sugar)
25 grams – Vegetable Shortening (or lard)
500 grams – Plain Flour
1 teaspoon – Salt (fine)
50 grams – Butter (unsalted)
250 milliliters – Heavy Whipping Cream (or double cream)
250 milliliters – Full Cream Milk
1 tablespoon – Milk
Directions:
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F) and place a baking tray inside to warm. Mix flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a bowl. Add butter and lard (or shortening), blending until it resembles damp sand. Gradually add milk, mixing until the dough just comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.
Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 3 cm (1 inch) thick. Cut scones with a round cutter, reshaping the dough gently if needed. Place scones close together on a baking tray. Brush with egg wash (beaten egg and milk). Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden. Check doneness with a thermometer (center should reach 85°C/185°F). Serve warm or at room temperature with Chantilly cream and strawberry jam.
Chantilly Cream: Whisk cream and sugar until soft peaks form.
Associate of the Month
Te’azhia Johnson
Legacy Ridge at Sandy Plains Celebrates Te’azhia Johnson Associate of the Month for December
We celebrate Te’azhia as our December Associate of the Month. She has been a care partner for six months at Sandy Plains. This is her first job, and she has truly hit the ground running. She is inspired by her mother who is the scheduler and med tech at our community. Te’azhia is a self-starter with an amazing can-do attitude. She says, “she likes to help people and put a smile on their face.” The residents look forward to having her care and spend time with them. She purchased a Halloween Costume for one of our residents and truly made it one of her best Halloween’s. The resident even won a prize.
Te’azhia does a wonderful job engaging with our residents and is a great help with our activities. When asked what advice you would give a new staff member, she stresses the importance of having a good attitude and remembering your energy is bouncing off you to them. Te”azhia says this job is a great fit for her and has led her to pursue a career in nursing. Currently she is in school for graphic design and taking real estate classes. This Mays High School 2023 graduate and former cheerleader loves coding, decorating, shopping, reading and enjoys pasta and ginger ale. She has six siblings, one niece and one of the way.
We congratulate Te’azhia on this honor and we look forward to great things from her in 2025.
