Grand Canyon

Designated a national monument in 1908; President Woodrow Wilson made Grand Canyon a national park to protect the land and the resources within it in 1919.

Grand Canyon

The Grand Canyon was formed over millions of years as the Colorado River and its tributaries carved their way through layers of rock, creating a canyon that is over a mile deep and up to 18 miles wide in some places.

A Winter Farewell

Farewell Winter

The first day of spring is a common reason for celebration for people all over the world, but the students at Lake Superior State University in Michigan may have taken it too far. Every March 20 since 1971, except one, the students have bid farewell to winter by burning a snowman. This isn’t just some wacky college prank; the bizarre tradition began in Germany as the Rose Sunday Festival, where a parade bearing a snowman (made of straw) passes through town to the village center. There, the mayor asks all the local children if they have been good, diligent in their studies, and mindful of their parents. When all the children publicly shout “Yes!” the snowman is burned.

The 10-foot snowman is made of leftover paper and scrap wood and is sometimes dressed in a rival college’s colors. As it burns, students, professors, local children, and anyone else who cares to join in recite poetry they have written about the snowman.

Resident of the Month

Clarence and Marta

Clarence and Marta, Resident of the Month

Congratulations to Clarence and Martha Gerdt – they were both born and grew up in Alton, Illinois. Teenage sweethearts, they have been together for 75 years. It was actually some boys from school that set Clarence and Martha on a blind date in 1947, they went to dinner at a restaurant called “Bright Spot”. They would only see each other on the weekends, Martha graduated in June and they married in September of 1948. At that time Clarence worked on a farm, which protected him from being drafted he was under the II-C Classification – deferred because of agricultural occupation.

They bought their first home in Upper Alton, IL which only cost them $10,000, Clarence started working for Owens Glass Company and Martha worked in the financial center for the Army. We started our family in 1950, when Judy was born, and in 1952 Barry. Moving into our new home in 1954 in Fosterburg, IL which Clarence help built, and in 1957 our third child was born Tom.

We lived in that beautiful home for 34 years. We enjoyed camping, we would use a big tent and then Clarence built a pop-up and Martha sewed the cover and in 1998 we bought a motor home a “5th Wheel” we went ever where. Camping was what we loved to do, we have gone almost to every National Park, so much fun.

Our next move was to Godfrey, IL where we moved into a condo living there for 2 years. In 2014 we moved to Mauldin, SC and in August of 2022, we moved to Legacy Reserve. We are close to our daughter Judy, we have 9 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren.

Jeopardy’s Journey

Television quiz shows came under fire in the 1950s whenit was discovered that contestants were given help and sometimes even answers by quiz show producers. The incredibly popular shows Quiz Show, Twenty-One, Dotto, and The $64,000 Question were all revealed to have been rigged, with contestants playing along to increase the dramatic tension and make the show more enjoyable for viewers. In 1960, Congress finally passed a law banning all fixing of quiz shows.

It’s not surprising that many television networks were hesitant to produce any new quiz shows. But audiences craved them. In 1964, television producer Merv Griffin wanted to come up with a new game show. His wife, Julann, pitched him this idea: a show where the contestants were given the answer and challenged to come up with the question. For example, if the answer is 5,280, the question is, “What is, ‘How many feet are in a mile?’” Fromthat simple idea, the hit show Jeopardy! was born. On March 30, 1964, Jeopardy! debuted, hosted by actor Art Fleming. It was a successful show, but after 11 years it folded. It was revived in 1984, this time hosted by Alex Trebek. For over three decades, Trebek reigned asthe quintessential host of Jeopardy! With his poised demeanor and unmistakable voice, Trebek guided contestants through the challenging questions withwit and charm. He personified knowledge, embodying the essence of the beloved quiz show.

After Trebek’s death in 2020, the show embraced a rotating roster of hosts.

The Benefits of Dancing

Dance is a gentle and painless way to exercise, engaging the mind and body in an enjoyable way that does not feel like typical exercise. Also, it causes fewer injuries than other exercises because its varied movements are less repetitive.

There are several health benefits of dancing. Let’s explore some of the benefits of older people dancing:

1. BETTER CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTHDance provides low-impact cardio at an activity level that produces many of the same heart and pulmonary benefits as traditional cardio exercises.2. GREATER STRENGTH AND ENDURANCEDancing builds muscle strength in almost every part of the body because you are moving your body in a way that requires your muscles to resist your body weight. It increases your ability to go about daily tasks with less chance of injury or falls due to frailty. The more you move (dance), the more you are able to move (in general).3. IMPROVED BONE HEALTHMovement enhances bone strength because it increases bone mass.4. BETTER WEIGHT MANAGEMENTDancing provides a whole-body workout that results in calorie burn.5. INCREASED ENERGY LEVELSDancing stimulates the production of feel-good hormones, such as serotonin and endorphins, making you more energized.6. IMPROVED FLEXIBILITYDance can help you avoid other injuries by keeping your joints loose and enabling more movement with less physical discomfort.7. ENHANCED AGILITYAs we age, we tend to lose the ability to move quickly and easily. Dancing helps you regain some

The Perfect Pair

Chips and Dips day

Feeling hungry? March 23 is Chip and Dip Day. This ultimate snack and party pairing has come a long way since chips and salsa. Often, the dip is the exciting element of the duo: creamy ranch made with sour cream, dill, garlic, and dried onions. Or guacamole with fresh avocados, garlic, onion, tomatoes, a dash of cayenne, and a squirt of lime. For a change of pace, try hummus, spinach with artichokes, or a white bean spread.

Although it may be taken for granted, the chip is more than just a vehicle for the dip. Corn, potato, and baked pita chips provide a satisfying crunch. Sometimes, you don’t need a chip at all. Toasted slices of Italian bread are the perfect base for bruschetta. If you really want to impress a crowd, wow them with cheese fondue. The cheese is spectacular, but equally delicious are the sausage, bread, apples, and veggies for dipping.
