My name is Jolesia Barber, and I am currently a server at the Goldton in Adelaide. My journey here has been both fulfilling and transformative. I first joined the Goldton as a server in 2022, and after a brief hiatus, I came back in 2024. Being apart of this community has been a rewarding experience as the residents truly are a joy to be around. Working as a food server often comes with misconceptions. Many people think that being a server is simply about taking orders and delivering meals. However, my role encompasses much more than that. It involves building relationships and creating a welcoming environment for the residents. I take pride in knowing that my efforts can help to make their day a little brighter.

In addition to working at the a Goldton , I am a full time student at Mississippi University for Women, where I will be obtaining my degree in Public Health on May 9th, 2025.

In my spare time you can catch me traveling and enjoying a little sunshine.

Benefits of Annual Checkups in Your 50s and Older

Checkups and preventive screenings are a good idea at any age, but especially as you get older.

Along with wisdom, age brings greater chances of health problems. You’re more likely to get diseases like diabetes, heart disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cancer, and arthritis as the years pass.

Some of these conditions don’t show symptoms until they’ve gotten worse. An annual checkup gives your doctor a chance to find them early, when they can be more easily treated and sometimes cured.
Learn if You’re at Risk for Disease
During a checkup, your doctor can find problems that might make you more likely to get sick in the future. A check of your family health history could flag risks for inherited conditions like cancer or diabetes, so you can get the screenings you need to catch them early.

Your doctor will also ask about your diet, fitness, sleep, and stress habits. If you’re not following guidelines in these areas, you’ll get advice on how to improve. And if you smoke or drink too much, your doctor can offer tips on how to quit.

Find Health Problems Early
Your doctor is more likely to find a health problem than you could on your own. Doctors are trained to know what symptoms mean. They can refer you for tests, send you to the right specialist, or recommend treatments.

Conditions like high blood pressure and diabetes often don’t cause symptoms early on. Checks of your weight, blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol levels can help your doctor spot the signs of these diseases early. Many diseases are easiest to treat when they’re caught in their early stages.

Get Up to Date on Tests and Screenings
Your doctor will go over your health history at each year’s visit. That should include a check of whether you’re on track with screening tests like colonoscopy or mammograms. The doctor will also let you know which vaccines you need, like shots for the flu, pneumonia, or shingles.

Gain More Control Over Chronic Conditions
Long-term conditions like diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, and asthma need day-to-day care. Your doctor will check in with you at each visit to make sure you have these diseases under good control. If not, the doctor can recommend changes to your diet or medication.

Then you’ll be less likely to need expensive medicines or surgery. Weight loss advice can help you avoid diabetes or heart disease and the treatments they involve.

Coordinate Your Care
Your primary care doctor is the keeper of your health records. They can share your health history, test results, and list of medications with any other doctors and specialists you see. Having one person in charge can streamline your medical care.

Build a Relationship With Your Doctor
Each checkup gives you a chance to get to know your doctor better. A strong doctor-patient relationship is important. The trust you build will make it easier for you to talk about personal subjects like alcohol or drug use, sex, or urinary tract health. You’ll also feel better about asking questions or taking advice from your doctor if problems arise in the future.

Regular checkups also give your doctor a chance to learn more about you. These visits will make your doctor more familiar with your health history, so they’ll be able to tell if you develop symptoms that are new or unusual for you. The more your doctor knows, the more personalized care they can give you.

Your annual checkup is also an opportunity to discuss any mental health concerns you have. Talk to your doctor if you have been feeling depressed or anxious.

A Land of Spirit, Color, and Eternal Stories, Mexico is more than a country—it’s a heartbeat, a song carried by the wind across deserts, jungles, mountains, and beautyful beaches. A place where ancient civilizations whisper through pyramids and murals, and modern life dances to the rhythm of a strong and unique cultural heritage.

The word “México” comes from the Náhuatl words “Metztli” (moon) and “xictli” (navel or belly button), meaning “the belly button of the moon.” The Mexicas pronounced it “Meshico.”

According to legend, the Mexica people were the last of the nomadic tribes to arrive in central Anáhuac (yep, that was the ancient name for the heartland of what’s now Mexico). They came from a mythical island called Aztlán—which is why they’re also called Aztecs. They were searching for a sign sent by their main god, Huitzilopochtli: an eagle perched on a prickly pear cactus, devouring a snake. That was the sacred place where they were to build their city.

And they did find it—right in the middle of a vast lake called Texcoco. Legend says they took refuge on that small patch of land in the lake and founded their settlement, Tenochtitlan, around 1325. By the time the Spanish arrived in 1519, they were stunned by the sight of a majestic, dream-like well-organized metropolis—Tenochtitlan—one of the largest cities in the world at that time.

Recipe Spotlight:

Black bean quinoa bowl

This black bean and quinoa bowl has many of the usual hallmarks of a taco salad, minus the fried bowl. We’ve loaded it up with pico de gallo, fresh cilantro and avocado plus an easy hummus dressing to drizzle on top.

Ingredients
• ¾ cup canned black beans, rinsed
• ⅔ cup cooked quinoa
• ¼ cup hummus
• 1 tablespoon lime juice
• ¼ medium avocado, diced
• 3 tablespoons pico de gallo
• 2 tablespoons chopped fresh cilantro

Directions
1. Combine beans and quinoa in a bowl. Stir hummus and lime juice together in a small bowl; thin with water to desired consistency. Drizzle the hummus dressing over the beans and quinoa. Top with avocado, pico de gallo and cilantro.

Resident of the Month

Minnie "Jo" Harris

Mr. Paul Spikes is our beloved Resident of the Month for April! Mr. Paul was born in Fort Worth, Texas but grew up in various places in Mississippi. While living in Mississippi, Mr. Paul joined the United States Army and is now a proud Veteran. Mr. Paul and his wife had 2 sons together and he loves anytime he sees his family. He also taught at Mississippi State University and was a very successful professor, stating that one of his greatest achievements was being able to succeed in teaching and impacting college students. Mr. Paul has also always been extremely active in his church community, as well as our church community here at The Goldton. We feel so immensely grateful to have Mr. Paul live with us here at The Goldton, for his kindness and positivity radiate throughout our building.
We love you, Mr. Paul!
