Alyssa Gousse

Alyssa Gousse

From manning the front desk to manning the med cart and everything in between, Alyssa’s ambition is evident. Born in Rhode Island, she moved to Florida at a young age. In her studies, she discovered her passion for medicine, criminal justice, and hospitality. She bounces from being our concierge to passing meds on all the floors to even covering activities in our memory support and AL settings.
She is a natural leader. She questions everything as a means to learn but does so in a manner that makes her highly respected by her peers. They can often be found talking to her to get insights on ways of making things better. She is capable of doing anything she puts her mind to and ultimately, she wants to be a prosecutor. You may find her name in future clippings but for now, she is a blessing to us all here at the Atrium.

The Joy of Togetherness

As the holiday season approaches, many of us prepare for a whirlwind of festive activities, decorations, and bustling shopping trips. However, amidst the excitement and chaos, it’s crucial to remember the true essence of this time of year: spending quality moments with our loved ones. The benefits of gathering with family and friends during the holidays extend beyond mere tradition; they encompass emotional, psychological, and even physical advantages that can enhance our overall well-being.
One of the most immediate benefits of holiday gatherings is the opportunity to strengthen bonds with family and friends. Life often leads us down different paths, and the hustle and bustle of everyday life can strain relationships. Holiday get-togethers provide a chance to reconnect, reminisce, and create new memories. Whether it’s sitting around a dinner table sharing stories or engaging in holiday-themed activities, these moments foster deeper connections and create a sense of belonging.
The holiday season can be a time filled with stress, anxiety, and loneliness for many. However, spending quality time with loved ones can significantly alleviate these feelings. Social interactions have been shown to release dopamine and oxytocin—hormones associated with happiness and bonding. Engaging in heartfelt conversations, laughing, and participating in fun festivities with loved ones can uplift our spirits, enhancing our emotional well-being and combating feelings of isolation.
Holidays are often associated with cherished memories that last a lifetime. The sights, sounds, and smells of the season can evoke nostalgia and warmth, making them a perfect backdrop for unforgettable experiences. From baking cookies together to participating in community events, the memories forged during these special times become cherished stories that we carry with us into the future. Sharing these experiences fosters a sense of continuity and tradition, enriching our family narratives and reinforcing our identities.
The holiday season naturally encourages reflection and gratitude. Spending time with loved ones provides an opportunity to express appreciation for one another and acknowledge the support systems in our lives. Holiday gatherings often spark conversations that allow us to express our love and gratitude, fostering a positive mindset. This practice of gratitude has been linked to increased happiness and life satisfaction, making the holidays a wonderful time to cultivate a thankful heart.
Believe it or not, spending time with loved ones can benefit our physical health as well. Socializing reduces stress and encourages relaxation, which can lead to improved immune function and lower levels of inflammation—especially important during cold and flu season. Engaging in group activities, whether it’s taking a leisurely walk, playing games, or participating in sports, promotes physical fitness and well-being while fostering camaraderie and teamwork.
As we gather with family, our hearts can extend to include friends and our broader communities as well. The holiday season is an ideal time to give back and engage in community service, and sharing these experiences with loved ones can deepen our collective sense of purpose and fulfillment. Volunteering at a local shelter or participating in charitable activities not only strengthens the bonds between those involved but also promotes a sense of community spirit and shared values.
The holiday season presents a unique opportunity to pause, reflect, and engage in meaningful connections with those whom we hold dear. The benefits of spending time with loved ones during this time extend far beyond enjoyment and festivity—they nurture our mental, emotional, and physical well-being. As we navigate the busy holiday season, let us prioritize time together, creating a tapestry of memories filled with love, laughter, and gratitude. After all, the gift of togetherness is one of the most priceless treasures we can give and receive.

The Gift of Time

In the quaint little town of Maplewood, the whispers of winter had begun to dance through the streets, dusting rooftops and sidewalks with a glimmering layer of white. Christmas was just around the corner, and the town was aglow with twinkling lights and the sweet scent of pine wafting through the air. Children laughed as they built snowmen, and shopkeepers adorned their windows with festive displays.
In a small, cozy house at the end of Maple Street lived Mrs. Clara Thompson, a gentle soul with a heart as warm as a crackling fire. Every year, Clara made it her mission to spread holiday cheer throughout the town. She baked cookies, knitted scarves, and decorated the town square with handmade ornaments. Yet, despite the joy she brought, Clara felt a void in her heart. You see, the past few years had been marked by loneliness since her beloved husband, George, had passed away.
As Christmas approached, Clara’s sadness deepened. While she found solace in her activities, it wasn’t the same without George’s laughter echoing through their home. One rainy afternoon, while sorting through old boxes in the attic, Clara stumbled upon a dusty, yellowed envelope. Inside was a collection of letters George had written to her over the years, filled with love, hope, and a promise he had made long ago: “No matter where we go or what we face, the greatest gift I can give you is my time. Cherish it.”
Reading those words brought tears to Clara’s eyes. She realized that while George was no longer there physically, the time they had shared was still alive in her heart. Encouraged by this newfound clarity and warmth, Clara decided to make this Christmas different. Instead of mourning her loss, she would embrace the spirit of giving, just as George would have wanted.
Clara spent the next few weeks preparing for Christmas like never before. But this year, she focused not on material gifts but on experiences. She invited her neighbors—families, singles, and even those who had lost loved ones—over to her house for a Christmas celebration. She baked cookies together with the children, sharing stories and laughter that filled her home with the joyous spirit she craved.
On Christmas Eve, Clara’s cozy house was alive with chatter and cheer. The aroma of roasted turkey wafted through the hallways, while her large tree, adorned with ornaments and twinkling lights, sparkled brightly in the corner. Clara realized that the love she had poured into others was filling her heart as well.
As the evening wore on, Clara invited everyone to gather around the fire. With a warm smile, she shared stories of Christmases past, weaving in tales of George and their beautiful life together. In her words, she felt George’s spirit alongside her, and she articulated the profound lesson of their love: time spent with others is the most precious gift of all.
After sharing laughter and heartfelt moments, Clara encouraged everyone to take a few minutes to express gratitude for the people in their lives. The room filled with emotion as each person shared their stories, painting a picture of love, resilience, and connection. Clara realized that, in sharing her time and heart, she had not only ignited the spirit of Christmas in others but had also rekindled it within herself.

As the clock struck midnight, Clara stood by the window, gazing out at the starry sky dusted with snow. She could almost feel George’s presence beside her, reassuring her that he was proud of her for embracing love and connection. In that moment, she understood that while life brings loss, it also offers us the opportunity to create beautiful memories anew.
From that year forward, Clara continued the tradition of bringing people together during the holidays. Each Christmas was filled with laughter, love, and the sharing of time, which became the most cherished gift of all. The void in her heart was filled not by what she had lost, but by what she had chosen to give—the gift of time, the gift of love, and the unbreakable bonds forged in the spirit of Christmas.
And in the little town of Maplewood, the true essence of Christmas shone brighter than ever, fueled by the timeless reminder that the greatest gift we can offer one another is simply to be present.

The Festival of Lights: Understanding Hanukkah

The Festival of Lights: Understanding Hanukkah

Hanukkah, also known as the Festival of Lights, is a significant Jewish holiday celebrated for eight nights and days, typically falling in December. This vibrant celebration not only commemorates a historical miracle but also serves as a time of family gatherings, traditions, and joyous festivities.
Hanukkah’s origins date back to the 2nd century BCE when the Jewish people were under the rule of the Seleucid Empire, which sought to impose Hellenistic culture and religious beliefs on the Jewish population. The Jewish revolt against this oppressive regime was led by the Maccabees, a group of Jewish warriors. Their struggle culminated in the successful rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem.
According to tradition, when the Maccabees reclaimed the Temple, they found only a small amount of oil, enough to light the menorah (the seven-branched candelabrum) for just one day. Miraculously, this oil lasted for eight days – enough time for them to prepare and sanctify a new supply of oil. This miracle is the essence of Hanukkah, underpinning its significance as a time of hope and resilience.
Hanukkah is observed for eight nights, with each night commemorating the miracle of the oil. Each evening, families gather to light the menorah, which holds nine candles – eight for each night of Hanukkah and a helper candle called the “shamash.” The menorah is typically placed in a window or doorway to share the light of the festival with the outside world.
On each night, one additional candle is lit, starting with one on the first night and culminating with all eight being lit on the final night. Blessings are recited before lighting the candles, and traditional songs, such as “Maoz Tzur,” are sung.
Food also plays a crucial role in Hanukkah celebrations. Fried foods, particularly those made with oil, are common to symbolize the miracle of the oil. Latkes (potato pancakes) and sufganiyot (jelly-filled doughnuts) are popular festive dishes.
In addition to the religious observances, modern Hanukkah celebrations often include gift-giving. Many families exchange presents on each night of the holiday. Another popular tradition is playing dreidel, a spinning top that is associated with a game of chance. The dreidel has four Hebrew letters on it, which stand for “A great miracle happened there.”
At its core, Hanukkah represents the triumph of light over darkness and the enduring spirit of faith and cultural identity. It is a time for reflection on perseverance, hope, and the importance of standing up for one’s beliefs. The gift of light symbolizes knowledge and education, which are deeply valued in Jewish tradition.
As we light the candles each night, we not only honor the miracle of the oil but also reinforce the resilience of the Jewish people throughout history. Hanukkah serves as a reminder of the importance of community, family, and tradition, creating bonds that not only strengthen individual identities but also enrich the collective experiences of Jewish people around the world.
Hanukkah is much more than a simple holiday; it is a celebration of faith, freedom, and light in the dark. Through its rich traditions, joyous celebrations, and deep historical significance, Hanukkah encourages reflection on what it means to be part of a vibrant community that cherishes its heritage and honors the past. As families come together to celebrate, they illuminate their homes and hearts with the warmth of love, remembrance, and hope.

Whispers of the Heart:

Letter 1: Emily to Jack
October 1, 2023

Dear Jack,

I hope this letter finds you well. It feels strange to put pen to paper when we’ve always relied on our phones or video calls. But I wanted to take a moment to write to you, to feel closer to you despite the distance.

Every morning when I wake up, I still think about the last time we were together. The sun filtering through the trees in the park, the way your laughter blended with the sound of rustling leaves—it’s a memory I cherish deeply. I find myself revisiting those moments often, especially on days like today when the sky is a soft shade of gray.

Life here is moving slowly, almost like the weather mirrors my heart. Work is busy, and I am trying to pour myself into my projects, though I often find my thoughts drifting to you. I wonder how you are doing in your new city, how you’re adjusting to the pace and rhythm of life without me beside you. I can only imagine the beautiful places you must be exploring and the wonderful people you must be meeting.

Please write back when you can. I want to hear about your adventures, your new favorite coffee shop, and even the little things that make you smile.

With all my love,
Emily

Letter 2: Jack to Emily
October 5, 2023

Dearest Emily,

Receiving your letter was like finding a long-lost treasure. I didn’t realize how much I missed your words until I read them. The way you describe the memories we shared brought a smile to my face and reminded me of just how lucky I am to have you in my life.

It is true—I often think of our day at the park, the laughter we shared, and the way time seemed to stand still when we were lost in each other. Here, everything feels different and yet somehow… I still feel your presence in my heart. I’ve tried to explore this new city, but I often wish you were with me to share those moments. There’s a cozy little café around the corner that serves the best pastries, and I could have sworn I heard your laughter when I first walked in.

I’ll admit, it’s been tougher than I thought to adjust. The streets are filled with memories of you, and while I push through my work, there’s a part of me that feels incomplete. I count down the days until I can see you again—July seems so far away, yet I hold onto that date with hope.

Tell me more about your life, your days, and your dreams. I want to know everything, from the silly little things to the deep conversations we used to have late at night. You are always with me, Emily, no matter the miles between us.

Yours always,
Jack
