Tip Sheet: Hot Weather Safety Tips For Older Adults

While summer brings us warmth and bloom, prolonged exposure to excessive heat in summer months can be dangerous. Older adults and individuals with chronic medical conditions are at high risk of developing heat-related illnesses, because of aging-related physical changes in the body, chronic health conditions, and even effects of taking some medications.
Staying Safe When It’s Too Hot
When the temperature climbs above 80°F, older adults need to be proactive and take precautions to avoid ailments due to excessive heat. Keep in mind the following tips when trying to stay cool.
• Stay away from direct sun exposure as much as possible. If possible, plan your outdoor activities either early in the morning or when the sun starts to set.
• Air conditioning is your friend in summer. Spend as much time as possible in air-conditioned spaces. If you don’t have an air conditioner, go somewhere that is air-conditioned
• Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of cool water, clear juices, and other liquids that don’t contain alcohol or caffeine. Alcohol and caffeine cause you to lose water in your body by making you urinate more.
• Dress appropriately. Whenever you can, try wearing loose, light-colored clothes. Avoid dark-colored clothes as they may absorb heat. Top it off with a lightweight, broad-brimmed hat and you are dressing like a pro! These simple changes will help you both stay cool and avoid sunburn.
• Did someone say sunburn? Buy a broad spectrum sunscreen lotion or spray with sun protection factor (SPF) of 15 or higher. Apply the sunscreen liberally to all exposed skin. Also, bugs are abundant in summer, so spray insect repellent when going outdoors.
• Cool down! Take tepid (not too cold or too hot) showers, baths, or sponge baths when you’re feeling warm. Don’t have the time? Then wet washcloths or towels with cool water and put them on your wrists, ankles, armpits, and neck.

Hurricane Season Preparedness

Hurricane Season Preparedness

Our community has completed emergency management training in preparation for the 2024 hurricane season. Our current plan states that we will shelter in place unless Seminole County informs us that we must evacuate. We have all of the necessary and required supplies on hand in the event of an emergency. Our generator is tested monthly and was inspected in June. We have also mailed evacuation preference letters for families and residents to review. Please feel free to contact the community if you have additional questions or concerns regarding hurricane season procedures. If you answered yes to one of these questions, joining a support group with other family caregivers may be something you want to consider. Below are six reasons why caregivers often join support group:

To meet others who “get it”–You will discover you are not alone. Others in similar circumstances feel overwhelmed and frustrated as you do. You love the person for whom you’re caring, yet you want to scream, punch a pillow, run away.
To share, vent, compare–Get it off your chest in a safe space without guilt or judgement. You can be honest about your feelings. You are normal. You are human. You will get the validation you need, and you will carry on.
To learn–Through others’ experiences, you will learn coping strategies and be directed to resources. Every situation is unique, yet there’s plenty of commonality.
To realize you are #1–You must include caring for yourself in your regimen. After all, you are a person who matters, too. Also, without you, your loved one would have no one. You must place the oxygen mask on yourself, first, so you are able to assist another.
To pay it forward — Save someone else the energy and exasperation you expended on trial and error.
To establish camaraderie–Isolation is a killer. Literally. Connecting with others will help draw you out and energize you to carry on

Recipe of the Month:

Patriotic Berry Trifle

Patriotic Berry Trifle

Ingredients:
1 pound cake or angel food cake (store-bought or homemade), diced
2 (6-ounce) containers of blueberries (about 2 cups)
1 ½ quarts strawberries
16 ounces cream cheese, room temperature
1 ½ cups heavy whipping cream
2 cups confectioners’ sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla

Directions:
Hull and halve the strawberries. Reserve 1 cup of mixed berries to garnish the top of the trifle.
Cube the pound cake.
In a large bowl, with an electric mixer, whip the cream until stiff peaks form. Set aside.
Into another bowl, add the room temperature cream cheese and confectioner’s sugar; beat until smooth and creamy. Then, beat in the vanilla and 1/3 of the whipped cream. With a spatula, fold in the remaining whipped cream until combined. I like to add the pastry cream to a large ziplock bag with the corner snipped off. It makes it easy to add the cream to the trifle dish with smearing it on the sides.
Assemble the trifle: Begin and end with a pastry cream layer as follows: Add 1/3 of the pastry cream to the bottom of the trifle dish. Top with 1/2 of the cubbed pound cake and 1/2 of the berries. Then add a second layer of pastry cream, followed by remaining cubed pound cake and remaining berries. Add a final pastry cream layer to the top.
If serving immediately, top with reserved berries and add sprigs of fresh mint. If serving later, cover and store in the refrigerator up to 24 hours.
