Adah Nodin Associate of the Month

I was born and raised in upstate New York until 2 years agowhen I moved to Simpsonville. I am the youngest of 3, brothers,a sister, and 2 nephews 1 from each of my siblings.

I love waitressing, but wanted more of a career out of it so, here I am at Legacy. I enjoy interacting with all different typesof people, especially seniors and find that doing what I can tosatisfy them makes me as well as others happy.

My favorite part about working at Legacy is the residents andgrowing relationships with them. The day goes fast with all thefun that happens, it almost doesn’t even feel like work. My boyfriend and I love to work and travel! For now that is exactly what we’re doing, until our next adventure. I am going to enjoy the residents and all the fun time by makingnew friends and great memories. While learning new things, andgive joy/happiness to others.

comes from a very large family and is the first and oldest grandchild to attend college. She is the oldest of 12 grandchildren and 4 siblings.

After leaving for a brief time, she returned to Legacy once realizing how much she missed working with our residents. She has been with us for a year now.

Staying Active As A Senior

Being socially involved and active gives people a sense of belonging that provides added health benefits. Staying socially active is especially important for older adults who can sometimes become lonely and isolated.
Social activities include anything from dining with friends to playing a friendly competitive game with others to attending a class. Senior living communities with assisted living offer many opportunities for older adults to stay socially active. In fact, a study by the Mather Institute found that 69 percent of older adults believe that moving to a Life Plan Community improved their social wellness. This in turn improved study participants health too.
Being involved in social activities can help stave off isolation and loneliness – two issues seniors may face if they aren’t socially engaged. Social activities help people to build connections with others and improve their mood. Classes, lectures, and concerts are all opportunities to gather with others to make connections and get a mood boost.

Lucky, then, that April 30 is Honesty Day. Honesty can certainly hurt sometimes, but it also takes courage and maturity to be honest in difficult situations. Furthermore, staying honest attracts other honest people to you. When you are surrounded by the truth, you can be your authentic self. The freedom that comes with honesty is worth celebrating!

Creative Seniors

Creative Seniors

Creative Age programs offer adults 55 and older participatory, professionally-run programming with a focus on new skills development and social connections with others who have similar interests.
What is an example of creative aging?

An example of creative aging is taking a dance class. Engaging in physical activities such as dancing promotes physical fitness, cognitive function, and social interaction, which are all important aspects of healthy aging. Dancing can also provide a creative outlet and a sense of accomplishment.

Benefits of Pets To The Elderly

What are the benefits of pets to the elderly?
Having a pet helps elderly get out of the house, exercise, meet new people, reduce stress, etc. For elderly pet owners, who often live alone or in group facilities, pets can help reduce stress, lower blood pressure, increase social interaction and physical activity and help them learn.

Do pets help seniors live longer?
Scientific research has demonstrated the link between human-animal interaction and healthy aging. Seniors having pets can improve their health and more! Pet ownership is one of the most common ways older adults interact with animals; over half of adults over 50 have at least one pet.

Recipe Spotlight:

Mixed Berry Spinach Salad With Strawberry Balsamic Vinaigrette Dressing

Ingredients:
5 ounces Baby Spinach
1 cup Strawberry (sliced)
½ cup Blueberry
½ Red Onion (thinly sliced)
1 Sweet Apple (cored, halved and thinly sliced)
1 cup Candied Walnuts (chopped)
1 cup Strawberry
¼ cup Balsamic Vinegar
¼ cup Extra Virgin Olive Oil
1 tablespoon Dijon Mustard
1 tablespoon Honey
1 clove Garlic (minced)
¼ teaspoon Salt
¼ teaspoon Pepper
⅔ cup Feta Cheese (as desired)

Directions:
For the dressing, push a straw through the strawberries from the tip to the green top to remove the hull. (Or you can cut it off with a knife!) Add the rest of the dressing ingredients. Blend until smooth. Refrigerate. Cut strawberries, apple, and onion into slices.
Combine all the salad ingredients in a large bowl. Drizzle with desired amount of dressing and toss to coat. (Spinach wilts easily, don’t add dressing until ready to eat!) Sprinkle feta cheese on top and serve.
