Jamie A Brewton

Jamie A Brewton, Associate of the Month January 2024 | Legacy Reserve at Fairview Park

My name is Jamie Ariel Brewton. My mom loved the movie ‘Little Mermaid’; she watched it while she was pregnant with me, so Ariel is my middle name. I grew up in the small town of Woodruff, South Carolina, with my younger brother, a mother who is a teacher, and a father who is a Pastor.

I started my food service career as a server, and in the years since, I have worked in every position, from dishwasher to General Manager. I enjoy cooking, and to be honest, my passion is breakfast; eggs are by far my favorite. I’ve been told that my omelets are amazing!

I also have another passion that no one knows about, which is also a fun fact about me: I have broken every one of my fingers on both hands, and I am also a published poet!

7 Tips to Keep Your Mind Active as You Age

Aging is a beautiful process, but it can also come with certain challenges, especially when it comes to maintaining mental sharpness. However, just like physical exercise is crucial for keeping our bodies healthy, there are various activities and habits that can help keep our minds active and engaged as we age. Here are seven tips to help you boost your cognitive abilities and maintain a sharp mind throughout your later years.1. Engage in Mental Stimulation: It’s important to challenge your brain regularly to keep it active and sharp.2. Stay Socially Active: Maintaining social connections is often overlooked but plays a significant role in keeping your mind active.3. Stay Physically Active: Physical exercise has numerous benefits for our overall well-being, and that extends to brain health as well.4. Maintain a Balanced Diet: A healthy diet not only fuels your body but also nourishes your brain.5. Get Sufficient Sleep: Sleep is essential for brain health and overall well-being. During sleep, the brain consolidates memories, rejuvenates, and detoxifies itself.6. Embrace Lifelong Learning: Learning doesn’t have to stop as you age. In fact, engaging in new activities or hobbies can be one of the most effective ways to keep your mind active.7. Practice Mindfulness and Stress Reduction: Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on the brain, such as shrinking certain brain regions and impairing cognitive functions.

Age is Just a Number

Age is just a number

In today’s interconnected world, fostering connections between different generations has become more important than ever. Intergenerational programs, particularly within senior living communities, have proven to be an effective means of enhancing the quality of life for older adults while simultaneously providing invaluable learning experiences for younger generations. These programs not only bridge the generation gap but also promote understanding, empathy, and mutual respect among individuals from diverse age groups. With the benefits of intergenerational programs being widely recognized, senior living communities are increasingly embracing these initiatives as an integral part of their offerings.

Creating Meaningful Connections:

One of the most significant advantages of intergenerational programs in senior living is the opportunity it provides for older adults to form deep and meaningful connections with younger individuals. These interactions break down misconceptions and stereotypes, enabling seniors to remain socially engaged and maintain positive mental well-being.

For older adults, spending time with children or young adults can evoke feelings of joy, purpose, and a renewed sense of vitality. Engaging in activities together, such as reading or crafts, not only promotes mental stimulation but also encourages seniors to share their wisdom and experiences. In turn, younger individuals benefit from the wisdom, companionship, and guidance of their older counterparts.

3. Increased physical activity: Having a pet can encourage seniors to be more active and engage in physical activities.
4. Improved mental health: Pets can have a positive impact on seniors’ mental health. They can provide a sense of purpose and responsibility, as seniors have to care for their pets’ needs, such as feeding, grooming, and exercising.
5. Social interaction: Pets often serve as social catalysts, helping seniors engage with others and create connections.
6. Structure and routine: Seniors may benefit from the structure and routine that comes with pet ownership.
7. Cognitive stimulation and memory enhancement: Interacting with pets can stimulate cognitive function and memory in seniors.
Overall, pets can bring immense joy, companionship, and numerous health benefits to seniors. However, it’s essential to make an informed decision about pet ownership and ensure that seniors are capable of providing proper care and attention to their furry companions.

It also promotes social interaction and can serve as a therapeutic tool to address physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges commonly faced by older adults.Artistic activities enable seniors to express themselves freely and creatively. As individuals age, they may face limitations that affect their ability to communicate effectively. Art provides an alternative means of self-expression, allowing seniors to communicate their thoughts, emotions, and experiences through various mediums such as painting, drawing, sculpture, or even music and dance. This form of expression provides a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction, promoting a positive self-image and a healthy emotional outlook.Engaging in art and creativity offers a sense of accomplishment and purpose for seniors. As older adults transition into retirement, they may experience a loss of identity and a lack of goals or responsibilities.
