Associate of the Month

Ashley Zelaya

Believe it or not, this December marks my first year working at Legacy as a server. Time flies when you’re having fun!

I was born in Georgia but raised in Texas, along with my two younger sisters. We moved to South Carolina three years ago, and I now share my home with three cats, one dog, and a hamster. As you can see, I love all kinds of animals!

I am currently in college, studying toward an Associate’s degree in Science. My goal is to advance in life and support my mother.

Working at Legacy has allowed me to connect with a variety of diverse people and gain valuable experiences that have contributed to my personal growth.

Congratulations, Ashley Zelaya!

“I like working at Legacy because of all the experiences that will be useful later in life.”

With over 700 miles of trails in Glacier providing outstanding opportunities for both short hikes and extended backpacking trips, there’s something for everyone.

Glacier National Park

A hiker’s paradise, Glacier National Park provides an exceptional backcountry experience, the perfect summer vacation for families and adventurers.
Glacier National Park was established in 1910, covers about one million acres of land, and contains 25 “active” glaciers that move due to thawing and melting.

There are a number of beloved areas in Glacier National Park. “Going-to-the-Sun Road”, a 50-mile trek that provides some of the most amazing views in Montana, is Glacier National Park’s most popular destination. North Fork is only accessible by dirt road and has incredible views of some of the park’s many lakes, as well as a historic homestead site. Goat Haunt is a remote and tranquil location that crosses the US-Canadian border.

Glacier has numerous hiking trails and abundant fauna. Two Medicine is a more remote destination for the adventurous visitors who want a taste of true wilderness. Also found in Glacier National Park, Triple Divide Peak is situated at the hydrological apex of North America. Water can flow from here into the Pacific, Atlantic, and Arctic oceans.

Yellowstone have geothermal areas that contain about half the world’s active geysers

The iconic symbol of Glacier National Park is the mountain goat. This young goat is just learning to scamper around the rocky cliffs in the park.

Resident of the Month

Charles Motes

Charles Motes was born and raised in Anderson County. He was the youngest of three with two older sisters. As a farm boy he fell in love with the outdoors. His sisters always said if you were looking for Charlie start looking for him up in the trees. He married Patricia Alewine in 1967, and they had two children a boy and a girl. They were together until her death in 2017, just months shy of their 50th anniversary.

His mechanical ability to fix anything broken came in handy with his favorite job, a civilian aircraft mechanic on military aircraft, specifically 101 Voodoos and 102 Delta Wings. He later joined AnMed on the air conditioning engineering team. It was with Anmed that he retired and began remodeling the farm house where he was born.

Charles was an avid hiker, joining the Anderson Hiking Club on their monthly hikes throughout the mountains of North and South Carolina and Georgia . He was also an assistant scout master and a free mason.

Seniors & the holidays

6 Ways to Help Seniors Find Joy During the Holidays

1. Reminisce in a Positive Way
Reflecting on the past can bring both comfort and joy. Seniors can embrace their favorite memories by sharing holiday stories, showing family photo albums, or creating a scrapbook. This exercise can be a bonding experience that brings multiple generations together. Rather than focusing on losses, encourage your loved ones to share their favorite holiday memories, foods, and family traditions.

2. Set a Realistic Budget & Stick to It
Many seniors feel pressure to spend money during the holiday season, especially on gifts and food. To ease this pressure, encourage them to set a budget that allows them to enjoy the season without financial strain. DIY gifts, such as handmade crafts or recipe books, can be a more meaningful (and less costly) way to show love. Remind them that the holidays are about spending time with loved ones, not the amount spent on presents

. 3. Participate in Meaningful Holiday Traditions
Getting into the holiday spirit doesn’t have to be extravagant. For seniors, holiday activities like decorating, baking, or listening to festive music can evoke happy memories and build excitement. Encourage them to join the family in putting up holiday decorations, baking favorite holiday treats, or even hosting a movie night with classic holiday films. The key is participating in activities that bring joy and warmth to their day.

4. Reach Out to Loved Ones & Friends
Social connection is one of the most effective ways to alleviate loneliness. Encourage seniors to keep in touch with family and friends, whether through phone calls, video chats, or in-person visits. Scheduling regular calls with loved ones can provide a sense of routine and something to look forward to each week. For tech-savvy seniors, FaceTime and Zoom are great for virtual gatherings that bring the family together, even from afar.

5. Engage in Community Events
If your senior loved one lives in a community or facility, check for holiday events or activities they can participate in. Many senior centers and communities host holiday gatherings, carol singing, and craft nights. Participating in these events can foster a sense of belonging and provide opportunities to make new friends.

6. Plan Relaxing Activities
The holiday season doesn’t have to be all hustle and bustle. Plan time for simple, relaxing activities like listening to holiday music, reading a book, or assembling a gingerbread house. This can help seniors avoid feeling overwhelmed and instead enjoy peaceful moments throughout the season.

Renee Boyd

I have been married to Mike Boyd for 28 years. We have 4 children , 1 son-in-law and a “granddog”. I have been a homeschool mom for 19 years. I am originally from Promiseland, a small family community that started from dirt roads to now being a known Historical Community. I was raised in a single parent home with my mom and 3 sisters. Growing up in a home with all girls there was never a dull moment. I learned how to cook, sew, style hair, fashion, and take care of the home!

I enjoy singing, music, going on girl’s outings, shopping, movies, exercising and coffee. My favorite foods are Hamburgers, Salads and Red Velvet Cake! My passion is to one day have my own multicultural building that provides a place for teaching, gatherings and events to encourage young girls and women.

Resident of the Month

Geri Kowalski

I was born in Baltimore, Maryland, and raised on Long Island, New York. In 1969, I met my wonderful husband, Ralph, at a Polish dance. He had just returned after serving two years in Vietnam. A year later, we married and enjoyed 51 amazing years together.

We were blessed with two sons: Bill, born in 1972, and Matt, born in 1974. Ralph worked for UTC on Long Island for over 30 years, while I spent 25 years at Flair Mfg., starting as an account manager and eventually becoming operations manager.

In 1995, we moved to Simpsonville, South Carolina, to start a new chapter of our lives. Ralph worked for Graphic Printing until his retirement in 2010, and I worked for CSI—a plastic manufacturing company specializing in dumpster lids (no, it wasn’t Crime Scene Investigations!)—for 10 years before retiring in 2014.

On June 1, 2022, I moved to Legacy Reserve. I am truly blessed with two amazing sons, a wonderful daughter-in-law, Sonya, and three beautiful granddaughters, one of whom is also my great-granddaughter.

Congratulations, Geri!
