Five Trends in Senior Housing

With the Baby Boomer generation reaching retirement age, expectations are changing for senior housing. Long gone are the days of dull, one-size-fits-all living quarters for senior residents. Today’s seniors are more active and connected than ever, and they demand independent, energetic lifestyles well into retirement age.

Below are the five major trends we are seeing in senior living housing:

  1. Social activities. Today’s seniors crave social connection and options for activities and recreation, both within their communities and outside of their communities. Senior housing communities must offer activities like fitness classes and socials, while also providing transportation to shopping and entertainment in the cities where they live.
  2. Resort-like atmospheres. Bland and boring are no longer acceptable when it comes to living spaces for seniors. Senior communities with landscaped grounds and an inviting ambiance are now the norm. Our Legacy Reserve community, for example, will have a beautifully landscaped terrace with a relaxing water feature and views of a putting green. Tranquility for our residents in a beautiful environment is a priority — many of our communities also have day spas onsite for ultimate relaxation!
  3. Top-notch cuisine. Delicious meals on residents’ terms are the new standard for senior housing. Instead of three set meals per day, residents can now enjoy chef-prepared meals at their convenience throughout the day. Flexibility is key. Residents on-the-go can pick up food and take it with them if they are venturing outside the community.
  4. Improved aesthetics. Senior housing communities are getting a face-lift. Many have beautifully landscaped courtyards, pools, high-end features like granite countertops and stainless steel appliances, as well as high ceilings, luxurious bathrooms and walk-in closets.
  5. Customized lifestyle. Different residents require various levels of care. More senior housing communities are providing independent, single-family residences, in addition to more communal areas to increase a sense of community. The access to a complete spectrum of care, including in-house personal care and memory care, enables residents to stay in the same community as their needs may change over time.

Today’s seniors are more active than ever, and their living spaces should reflect that vibrancy. Senior housing will continue to increasingly offer more choices and activities to help seniors maintain independent lifestyles, while also providing personalized care for those that need daily assistance.
