Senior Living's Voice-Activated Future

Senior Living's Voice-Activated Future

Atlas is excited to have teamed up with a company bringing Alexa integration to *our senior living communities, promising a range of benefits for residents. The partnership with Speak2 ensures a secure, closed system, allowing residents to enjoy Alexa’s features along with community-specific information. The Oscar at Georgetown is one of the pilot communities, implementing the system in independent and assisted living apartments through Echo Show devices. These devices enable video calls to a residents contact list, provide visual information alongside Alexa’s voice, and offer community-specific features such as checking daily menus, planned activities, reminders for events, and mail delivery updates. As the system gets fully implemented, residents can look forward to capabilities like making on-site dinner reservations, submitting work orders, and even allowing Assisted Living and Memory Care staff to verbally document care, seamlessly integrating with the Electronic Medical Record system. Additionally, the system extends its control to smart home devices like light bulbs, thermostats, and blinds (sold separately). Brian Haddock, the Executive Director, expresses excitement about the technology’s potential and eagerly anticipates the positive impact it will bring to both the team and residents at The Oscar. In conclusion, it’s full speed ahead for Alexa and Speak2!

Resident of the Month

Martha Marks

Born in Justin TX, Martha’s life reads like a cherished melody. Born 78 years ago, she heeded her mother’s advice to play the piano, launching her musical journey at 7. Teaching piano since 16, Martha earned her BS and MA in piano performance and Music Education. For 25 years, Martha taught the Kodaly music method by day and piano by night. Love blossomed in 1969, leading to 54 years of marriage and two daughters, Dawn and Mandy, plus grandchildren. In retirement, she and her husband can’t wait to find solace in The Oscar community.

Freed from cooking and cleaning, Martha can’t wait to indulge in book club, sewing, crafts, and bunco.  The indoor heated salted swimming pool is a sanctuary and the thought of starting an ancestry club excites her. As Martha embraces this new chapter, the convenience of community transportation eases her retired life.

Martha’s unwavering presence at every event is a true example of what enjoying retirement at The Oscar is all about. Our Resident of the Month Martha Marks!

February Spotlight Recipe

Tuscan Shrimp Pasta

Ingredients:

3 dozen shrimp (21-25 count) peeled and deveined
2 lbs. pasta, cooked al dente
1/4 lb. butter
1 tbs. garlic, sliced
1/4 cup green onions, diced
1/4 cup mushrooms, sliced
1/4 cup red bell pepper, julienne
1/4 cup yellow bell pepper, julienne
1/4 cup green bell pepper, julienne
1/2 cup Creole tomatoes, diced
1/4 cup black olives, sliced
2 tbs. flour
1 oz. dry white wine
2 1/2 cups hot shellfish or chicken stock
1 tsp. lemon juice
1 tsp. parsley
salt and pepper, to taste

Directions:

In a heavy bottom sauté pan, melt butter over medium-high heat. Sauté garlic, green onions and mushrooms approximately 2 minutes or until mushrooms are slightly wilted. Add bell peppers, tomatoes and olives, stir into mixture and cook one additional minute. Add shrimp and stir fry into vegetables until shrimp begin to turn pink and curl, approximately 2 minutes. Sprinkle in flour and blend into dish until white roux is achieved. The flour will absorb most of the liquids in the pan and act as a thickening agent for the sauce. Deglaze with white wine and add hot stock, whisking well into seasoning mixture. Add lemon juice and parsley and season to taste using salt and pepper. Cook until sauce is thickened and shrimp are perfectly cooked, but not overdone. Additional chicken stock may be added should sauce become too thick. Serve over your favorite pasta.
