Welcome to the United States of America
Around the World with Atlas

The United States of America is a vast and diverse nation, shaped by a bold spirit of freedom, innovation, and cultural fusion. From towering skyscraper cities to serene national parks, from the sounds of jazz and rhythm & blues to the electrifying pulse of rock & roll, the U.S. radiates a restless energy that has left a lasting cultural impact around the globe.

More than a global superpower in terms of industrial influence and technological innovation, the United States is also a leading force in the arts and cultural development. It has played a central role in shaping the modern world as we know it. The rise of Silicon Valley and the culture surrounding today’s tech giants is the result of a long legacy of American ingenuity and creative drive.

  • The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has issued over 11 million patents since its founding in 1790.
  • Among the most famous early patents: the light bulb (Edison), the airplane (Wright brothers), and the telephone (Bell).
  • Home to world-leading research institutions like MIT, Harvard, and Stanford.
  • The Internet, GPS, and personal computers were all developed in the U.S.
  • The birthplace of jazz, rock & roll, blues and hip hop.

Food, Culture, and Modern Celebrations

Modern 4th of July celebrations mix historical remembrance with American traditions involving food, family, and community events.

•Americans purchase over 200 million pounds of fireworks annually for July 4th. The tradition of fireworks dates back to the first anniversary celebration, inspired by John Adams’ vision of “illuminations” marking the holiday.
•The largest firework display happens in New York City. Macy’s 4th of July Fireworks typically launches over 75,000 shells and attracts more than 3 million spectators along the East River.
•“The Star-Spangled Banner” was written during the War of 1812, not the Revolution.
•The Pledge of Allegiance wasn’t written until 1892.
•Americans consume 150 million hot dogs on July 4th.
•Red, white, and blue became patriotic colors during the Civil War. While these colors appeared on the flag earlier, they gained stronger symbolic meaning as patriotic colors during the 1860s conflict.
•More than 16,000 communities hold 4th of July parades. From small towns to major cities, Independence Day parades represent one of the most widespread traditions in American celebration.
•Americans spend over $7 billion annually on fourth of July celebrations. This massive economic impact includes everything from food and beverages to fireworks, decorations, and travel, making Independence Day one of the biggest spending holidays of the summer.

Tips for Aging Gracefully

*Do something you enjoy every day. When you immerse yourself in things you enjoy, you can’t wait to do them again. And then you do them again, and again and again, and the enjoyment continues.
*Work at friendships. Friendships are fuel, providing energy, love and feeding your emotions. You’re never too old for new friendships.
*Congratulate yourself. Everyone has accomplishments: celebrate them and use them as inspiration for new ones.
*Embrace change. Life is change. Resisting it wastes precious time and energy.
*Learn. Exercise your brain continually.
*Make your home your special place by personalizing it and making it comfortable. Everyone needs a refuge that’s uniquely theirs.
*Get a massage frequently. Touch feels good and it’s so relaxing.
*Be gentle with yourself. Listen to your own inner voices and senses and do what makes you feel best.
*Share happiness. Make a point to spread joy whenever possible.
*Eat with friends and family.
*Eat smartly, but every once in awhile line up a row of warm chocolate chip cookies (or your favorite cookie) and dip them in milk.
*Get sufficient rest. Living takes work; we all need a break.
*Laugh and cry. But laugh a lot more. It feels good by releasing endorphins – the body’s natural feel-good chemicals.
*Exercise. It feels good to get those endorphins jumping.
*Surround yourself with people who lift you up rather than bring you down.
*Embrace the joys of old age. You’re smarter; you’re more experienced and you have more time to do the things you enjoy.
*Realize that although your body deteriorates, your spirit grows stronger if you allow it.
*Smile a lot.
