Sounds of Peru

Alexa play "La Malagueña" from "Juan Diego Flórez"

La Malagueña Salerosa is one of Mexico’s most iconic traditional songs, a vibrant example of the huapango style. In his album Bésame Mucho (2018), Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez offers a powerful and moving rendition, blending technical brilliance and deep emotion, proving why he is considered a national treasure of Peru.

A Creative Journey to Rainbow Mountain

At Madison at the Range, we believe creativity has no age limit—and this month, our imaginations are packing their bags for Peru! As part of our cultural travel series, we’re taking a colorful, hands-on trip to one of the most breathtaking sights in South America: the stunning Rainbow Mountain.

Also known as Vinicunca, Rainbow Mountain is famous for its vibrant, naturally layered colors caused by rich mineral deposits. It’s a place of wonder and beauty, and while we may not be climbing the Andes ourselves, we’re bringing the magic of this mountain right to our art tables.

Sand Art Terrariums: A Slice of Peru
Residents will be creating sand art terrariums, carefully layering vivid colors of sand to mimic the swirling stripes of Rainbow Mountain. Each terrarium will be a personal reflection of creativity, color, and culture—no two will be alike!

Not only is this project a fun way to express artistic flair, it’s also a relaxing activity that promotes mindfulness and fine motor skills. Layer by layer, residents will pour, pat, and design their own miniature landscapes—capturing the spirit of the mountain and adding a splash of joy to their day.

Art With Meaning
This experience goes beyond just making something beautiful. It’s about connecting with a new part of the world, sparking curiosity, and finding joy in self-expression. Exploring another country’s wonders—even from afar—can awaken a sense of adventure and appreciation for the diversity of our planet.

As we build our terrariums, we’ll also learn about Peruvian culture, history, and the natural marvels that make the country so special. It’s art, travel, and education all rolled into one vibrant activity.

We make mountains of memories here at Madison at the Range and we celebrate life through creativity. Whether it’s painting, music, storytelling, or terrariums inspired by a faraway mountain, art reminds us that we are all makers, dreamers, and explorers at heart.

We can’t wait for you all to see the colorful masterpieces our residents create—and the conversations, laughter, and inspiration that will come along with them.

Stay tuned for photos of our Rainbow Mountain-inspired terrariums in next month’s newsletter! or check out our Facebook page for the most current posts!

Nurturing the Spirit: A Journey of Purpose and Peace

In the rhythm of everyday life at our community, we share stories, laughter, and the simple joys of being together. But just as important as our physical and emotional well-being is the quiet, powerful presence of spiritual well-being—that sense of peace, connection, and purpose that nourishes us from within.

What Is Spiritual Well-Being?
Spiritual well-being doesn’t belong to any one religion or belief system. It’s about feeling connected—to ourselves, to others, to nature, and to something greater than us. For some, it’s rooted in faith or prayer. For others, it’s found in music, art, nature, or acts of kindness. It’s a personal journey, and every path is welcome.

Why It Matters:
As we age, the value of inner peace becomes clearer. We reflect more. We remember. We ask questions about meaning, legacy, and love. Spiritual well-being helps us make sense of life’s joys and sorrows. It gives us resilience in hard times and deepens our gratitude in good ones.

In fact, research shows that spiritual wellness can improve quality of life, reduce feelings of isolation, and even boost physical health. But more than that, it offers something profound: a sense of belonging—to the world, to each other, and to ourselves.

Ways to Nurture Your Spirit:
There is no right or wrong way to grow spiritually, but here are a few gentle suggestions to spark your journey:

REFLECT DAILY: Spend a few quiet moments each day thinking, journaling, or simply breathing deeply. Reflection opens the door to wisdom and peace.

CONNECT WITH NATURE: A walk in the garden, the warmth of sunlight, the sound of birds—these are spiritual moments waiting to be noticed.

PRACTICE GRATITUDE: Make a habit of naming three things you’re thankful for each day. Gratitude shifts our focus from what’s missing to what’s meaningful.

SHARE AND LISTEN: Conversations with others about life, hope, and experiences can be deeply spiritual. Listening is just as powerful as speaking.

PARTICIPATE IN SERVICES OR GROUPS: Whether it’s a prayer circle, a meditation group, or a spiritual discussion, shared rituals can strengthen our sense of purpose and connection.

A Community That Cares for the Soul
Here at Madison at the Range, spiritual wellness is part of how we care—not just for bodies, but for hearts and souls. From chapel services to creative expression workshops, from quiet spaces to open conversations, we are committed to offering opportunities for each person to grow, reflect, and feel supported. Whether you’re rediscovering old beliefs, exploring new ones, or simply seeking peace, your spiritual journey is honored here. You are not alone.

Let this be a place where your spirit is as nourished as your body—where you wake each day with-hope and rest each night with peace.

Welcome to Peru
Around the World with Atlas

Land of Ancient Echoes and Living Wonders
Peru is a place where time weaves a magnificent tapestry of past and present. From the dizzying heights of the Andes to the depths of the Amazon rainforest, Peru is a country of contrasts—mystical, colorful, and vibrantly alive. It’s home to ancient civilizations, awe-inspiring landscapes, and cultural traditions that still pulse with life today.

Whether you’re drawn by the lost city of Machu Picchu, the flavors of ceviche, or the haunting sound of Andean flutes, Peru invites you to explore a land where legends walk beside everyday life.

🦙 Amazing Facts about Peru
Machu Picchu Is One of the New Seven Wonders of the World
Built in the 15th century by the Incas and rediscovered in 1911, this mountaintop citadel is Peru’s most iconic site—and a breathtaking symbol of human ingenuity.

Paws & Purpose: The Joys of Pets in Senior Life

There’s something special about the wag of a tail or the soft purr of a content cat that can turn an ordinary day into a joyful one. For many seniors, pets are more than just companions—they’re a source of comfort, routine, and unconditional love.

The Power of Companionship
As we age, social circles often change. Loved ones may move away, and days can feel quieter. Pets help fill that space—not just with noise, but with connection. A dog’s excitement at seeing you or a cat curling up on your lap can ease loneliness and lift spirits.

Studies show that pet owners often feel less stress, experience fewer symptoms of depression, and even enjoy better heart health. The presence of an animal can bring calm, laughter, and a renewed sense of purpose.

Small Responsibilities, Big Rewards
Caring for a pet—even something as small as a bird or fish—gives structure to the day. Feeding, grooming, or simply sitting together can create meaningful routines. For mobile seniors, walking a dog can encourage gentle exercise and social interaction.

No Pet? No Problem!
Even if you don’t own a pet, you can still experience the benefits. Many communities offer pet therapy visits, where friendly animals come to spend time with residents. Or consider volunteering with a local shelter, crafting toys or blankets for animals in need.

A Bond That Heals
Whether it’s a long-time furry friend or a new addition, pets have a unique way of bringing out the best in us. They don’t care how fast we move or how much we say—they just love us, exactly as we are.

So, the next time you see a tail wag or hear a meow, take a moment to smile. In that simple connection, there’s healing, joy, and a reminder that love comes in all shapes, sizes, and species.

Recipe Spotlight:

Arroz con Leche

Arroz con Leche, or milk rice pudding, is truly a dessert of the world. Though it likely originated in Spain or the Middle East, it is popular in many cultures, and each adds to this dish a particular flavor or ingredient. In Lima, it is believed that this dish was made popular by nuns at the Convent of Santa Clara, which was founded in 1606. In this recipe, the rice is first cooked with water and spices, then thickened with milk and sugar.

INGREDIENTS
1 1/2 cups long grain white rice, such as California Basmati
3 cups water
pinch of salt
2 cinnamon sticks
4 cloves
3 long, thin orange peels
3 cups whole milk
3/4 cup white sugar
1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract
cinnamon dust or orange peel zest for garnish
In addition to the ingredients above you’ll need a pot with a thick bottom to cook the rice, a wooden spoon for stirring, a bowl for washing the rice, and tweezers.

PREPARATION
Wash the rice in a bowl with running water until the water runs clear.
Combine the rice, water, salt, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and orange peels in a large, uncovered pot over medium to high heat and bring to a boil, stir occasionally to prevent the rice from sticking to the bottom of the pot.
When the water level lowers to the level of the rice, reduce heat to a simmer and partially cover, continue to cook until all the water has been absorbed.
Uncover the pot, add the whole milk and sugar, bring to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer and continue to cook uncovered, stirring frequently, until creamy in consistency, about 15 minutes
Turn off heat, use a tweezer to remove the cinnamon stick, cloves, and orange peels, then stir in the vanilla extract.
Serve warm in small bowls or ramekins and garnish with cinnamon dust or orange peel zest.

SERVINGS
This recipe yields about 4 cups, or 8 servings, 1/2 cup each.

NOTES
After washing the rice, steps 2 and 3, cooking the rice with water, should take about 15 minutes. Step 4, thickening the pudding with milk and sugar should also take about 15 minutes.

When stirring the rice with milk and sugar in step 4, occasionally scrape the entire bottom of the pot with the stirring spoon in a sweeping motion leading with the back of your hand — from left to right if you are right-handed. If you can see the bottom of the pot during the sweeping motion, then the rice pudding has the right consistency and is ready to be served.
