Spooky Season

History of “Trick or Treat”

Borrowing from European traditions, Americans began to dress up in costumes and go house to house asking for food or money, a practice that eventually became today’s “trick-or-treat” tradition.

In the late 1800s, there was a move in America to mold Halloween into a holiday more about community and neighborly get-togethers than about ghosts, pranks and witchcraft. At the turn of the century, Halloween parties for both children and adults became the most common way to celebrate the day. Parties focused on games, foods of the season and festive costumes.

Parents were encouraged by newspapers and community leaders to take anything “frightening” or “grotesque” out of Halloween celebrations. Because of these efforts, Halloween lost most of its superstitious and religious overtones by the beginning of the twentieth century.

Oktoberfest

Oktoberfest

September 21st – October 6th
Oktoberfest is an annual festival in Munich, Germany, held over a two-week period and ending on the first Sunday in October. The festival originated on October 12, 1810, in celebration of the marriage of the crown prince of Bavaria, who later became King Louis I.

Beer and food: Oktoberfest is known for its beer, with Munich brewers erecting temporary structures to serve beer to large crowds. Visitors also enjoy traditional German food.

Parades: Oktoberfest features parades with beer wagons, floats, and people in folk costumes. The opening weekend parade in Munich includes costumed performers, musicians, and farm animals.

Entertainment: Oktoberfest has a variety of entertainment, including music, dancing, games, and amusement rides. The festival also includes open-air performances and a shooting competition.

Recipe of the Month:

Creamy Butternut Squash Risotto

Creamy Butternut Squash Risotto

Ingredients:
-Butternut squash
-Arborio rice
-Garlic
-Onion
-White wine
-Fresh sage
-Vegetable broth
-Salt
-Pepper

Directions:
First, sauté the veggies. Cook the onion for 2-3 minutes over medium heat. Then, add the squash and cook for another 6-8 minutes, until it starts to soften. Next, toast the rice. Stir it into the pot along with the garlic and rosemary or sage. Let it cook for 1 minute before you add the wine and cook, stirring, for another 1-3 minutes, until the wine cooks down then, start adding the broth. Pour in 3/4 cup at a time and cook, stirring constantly, until the rice absorbs each addition. After you add the final 3/4 cup of broth, cook until the squash is tender, and the risotto is soft and creamy. Lastly, season to taste and that’s it!
