Benefits of Dancing for Seniors

Benefits of Dancing for Seniors

1. BETTER CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTHDance provides low-impact cardio at an activity level that produces many of the same heart and pulmonary benefits as traditional cardio exercises.

2. GREATER STRENGTH AND ENDURANCE
Dancing builds muscle strength in almost every part of the body because you are moving your body in a way that requires your muscles to resist your body weight. It increases your ability to go about daily tasks with less chance of injury or falls due to frailty. The more you move (dance), the more you are able to move (in general).

3. IMPROVED BONE HEALTHMovement enhances bone strength because it increases bone mass.

4. BETTER WEIGHT MANAGEMENTDancing provides a whole-body workout that results in calorie burn.

5. INCREASED ENERGY LEVELSDancing stimulates the production of feel-good hormones, such as serotonin and endorphins, making you more energized.

6. IMPROVED FLEXIBILITYDance can help you avoid other injuries by keeping your joints loose and enabling more movement with less physical discomfort.

7. ENHANCED AGILITYAs we age, we tend to lose the ability to move quickly and easily. Dancing helps you regain some of that agility.

8. IMPROVED BALANCEDance requires you to use balance as you move, step, and turn. Your base of support changes with each movement, and your brain and body respond by enhancing your ability to adjust and maintain your balance.

9. BETTER COGNITIONResearch shows that 1-2 hours of dancing per week can improve cognitive skills.

1. Stay Active – Aim to move at least 30 minutes each day.2. Hydration – Drink water with every meal.3. Healthy Eating – Cut back or eliminate sugars.4. Rest – Get enough sleep by creating bedtime routines for relaxing.5. Stay Well – Wash hands frequently to avoid germs.6. Feel Good – Smile more, smiling is a free and fun way to instantly boost your mood!

February Recipe Spotlight:

Strawberries & Cream

Strawberries and Cream

Ingredients:

Fresh Strawberries
Heavy Cream (Heavy Whipping Cream)
Sugar
Vanilla Bean Paste
Optional Ingredients: Grand Marnier, Chambord, or other fruit liqueurs

Directions:

First, beat chilled whipped cream until it becomes light and fluffy.
If you’d like to add vanilla bean, chambord, or grand marnier to the whipped cream you can stir it in here. Then, place it back in the fridge to chill until you’re ready to use it.
Next, mash the strawberries in a large bowl, along with the sugar and vanilla extract.
After that, spoon the mashed strawberries into the whipped cream and gently fold them in. Reserve some of the mashed berries for serving.
To serve this fruit dessert, spoon some of the cream mixture into serving glasses or dishes, top with some of the remaining mashed strawberries, and add another spoonful or two of the cream.
Garnish each dish with a few sliced strawberries.
