Sounds of Peru

Alexa play "La Malagueña" from "Juan Diego Flórez"

La Malagueña Salerosa is one of Mexico’s most iconic traditional songs, a vibrant example of the huapango style. In his album Bésame Mucho (2018), Peruvian tenor Juan Diego Flórez offers a powerful and moving rendition, blending technical brilliance and deep emotion, proving why he is considered a national treasure of Peru.

Welcome to Peru!

Located on the western edge of South America, Peru is a country of dramatic contrasts — in its landscapes, cultures, and traditions. It’s home to the soaring Andes Mountains, the vast Amazon Rainforest, and the dry, mysterious coastal deserts along the Pacific Ocean.
In Peru, you can stand in awe before Machu Picchu, the legendary Inca city hidden high in the clouds, or wander through the vibrant streets of Cusco, once the heart of the Inca Empire. In the capital city of Lima, you’ll find world-class restaurants blending ancient ingredients with modern culinary art.

Peruvians are proud of their indigenous roots, colonial heritage, and modern creativity. You’ll hear a mix of Spanish, Quechua, and Aymara spoken across the country, and you’ll experience colorful festivals, intricate weavings, and traditions passed down through generations.

🦙 Amazing Facts about Peru
Machu Picchu Is One of the New Seven Wonders of the World
Built in the 15th century by the Incas and rediscovered in 1911, this mountaintop citadel is Peru’s most iconic site—and a breathtaking symbol of human ingenuity.

Alzheimer's Awareness & Brain Health Month

June is a month dedicated to raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and promoting brain health. Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month serves as an opportunity to educate ourselves, support those affected by the disease, and take proactive steps to maintain optimal brain health. Wearing purple, sharing stories, and participating in events like memory walks are common ways people show their support. Challenge your brain with puzzles, reading, learning new skills or languages, or playing strategy games.
Lifelong learning builds cognitive reserve and helps delay decline.
Aim for at least 30 minutes of moderate aerobic activity (like walking or swimming) most days of the week. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain and supports memory and mood. Prioritize quality sleep, adults need 7–9 hours of sleep per night. Sleep is crucial for memory consolidation and brain detoxification.

CNA Week

CNA Week is a dedicated time celebrated in June to recognize and honor Certified Nursing Assistants for their essential role in healthcare. This year CNA week is June 11th – 18th CNAs provide compassionate, hands-on care to patients and residents in hospitals, nursing homes, and home care settings. Their work is physically demanding and emotionally meaningful—they assist with daily tasks like bathing, feeding, mobility, and offer crucial companionship and emotional support to those they care for. We have a community of great CNA’s that we deeply appreciate and want to thank for their resilience, patience and care.

Recipe of the Month:

Peruvian Ceviche

Peruvian Ceviche

Peruvian ceviche, cebiche, sebiche, or seviche[1] is a traditional dish widely eaten in Peru especially in the coastal region of the country. Ceviche is made and eaten throughout the whole year, but mostly served in the summer due to its refreshing and cold taste.

Ingridients:
2 potatoes
2 sweet potatoes
1 red onion, cut into thin strips
1 cup fresh lime juice
½ stalk celery, sliced
¼ cup lightly packed cilantro leaves
1 pinch ground cumin
1 clove garlic, minced
1 habanero pepper, seeded and minced
Salt and freshly ground pepper to taste
1 pound fresh tilapia, cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 pound medium shrimp – peeled, deveined, and cut into 1/2-inch pieces
1 bibb or Boston lettuce, separated into leaves

Directions:
1. Place the potatoes and sweet potatoes in a saucepan and cover with water.
2. Meanwhile, place the lime juice, celery, cilantro, and cumin into the bowl of a blender, and puree until smooth. Pour this mixture into a large glass bowl, and stir in the garlic and habanero pepper. Season with salt and pepper, then stir in the diced tilapia and shrimp.
3. Set aside to marinate for an hour, stirring occasionally. The seafood is done once it turns firm and opaque.
4. To serve, peel the potatoes and cut into slices. Stir the onions into the fish mixture. Line serving bowls with lettuce leaves.
