Aris, Associate of the Month, October 2024 | Madison at Ocoee

Congratulations to our October Associate of the Month, Aris! Aris has been a nurse for 19 years and she loves what she does. Aris is from Orlando, FL and enjoys traveling and spending time with her family. She has traveled all around the world including countries such as South Africa, Dubai, Thailand, China, Mexico, Jamacia, and the Bahamas. Her hobbies include making arts and crafts such as gift baskets and floral arrangements. THANK YOU FOR ALL YOU DO FOR OUR RESIDENTS!

As we step into the vibrant month of October, I am filled with excitement for the wonderful activities and events we have planned for you. This time of year, brings a special kind of warmth and community spirit, and I am thrilled to share it with all of you.

In October we have so many great activities and events to highlight. I look forward to our Halloween event, Family & Friends, and special outings. Most of all I am excited about the change in weather (we should start to see a little cooler weather).

New Resident Spotlight

Carol Farney is from San Diego California. She graduated from San Diego State with a nursing degree. She married and moved to Texas where she lived for over 35 years. After moving to Florida in 2000, she finally retired from nursing. She has 2 children, 4 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren. Carol has always enjoyed travel, especially the beach. Also reading, music, and working in her yard. Her family is the most important part of her life.

Senior Exercise Tips

Exercise for senior citizens can be a great way to improve mobility, strength, and overall health. Here are some safe and effective types of exercises:
1. Walking
Duration: 10-30 minutes
Frequency: Most days of the week
Benefits: Improves cardiovascular health and boosts mood.
2. Chair Exercises
Examples: Seated leg lifts, arm raises with light weights, seated marches.
Benefits: Builds strength and flexibility without risking falls.
3. Stretching
Focus Areas: Neck, shoulders, arms, back, hips, and legs.
Duration: Hold each stretch for 15-30 seconds.
Benefits: Increases flexibility and reduces stiffness.
4. Balance Exercises
Examples: Standing on one foot, heel-to-toe walk, tai chi.
Benefits: Improves stability and reduces fall risk.
5. Strength Training
Equipment: Light weights, resistance bands, or body weight.
Examples: Bicep curls, leg extensions, wall push-ups.

Listen to Your Body: Stop if you feel pain or discomfort.

Recipe Spotlight:

Candy Filled Witch Hats

Candy Filled Witch Hats

Ingredients:
12 waffle ice cream cones
12 oz chocolate melting wafers
12 chocolate cookies
12 green sour belts
12 black cat icing decorations
Halloween sprinkles
candy

Instructions:
1. Melt the chocolate wafers according to package directions. Cover the ice cream cone with chocolate, using a spatula to smooth and remove any excess chocolate. Decorate the cones with sprinkles and place on a parchment covered baking sheet.
2. Add a small amount of chocolate to the bottom edge of the cone to adhere the green sour belts. Optional: add a black cat icing decoration to the front.
3. Fill the cones with Halloween candy and sprinkles. Cover the bottom of the cone with chocolate, being careful not to drop chocolate inside the cone. Then place a chocolate cookie on top. Flip the cone over and let the chocolate set before transferring to an airtight container until ready to eat.

Resident of the Month

Elvera Ercolani

Elvera Ercolani, Resident of the Month, October 2024 | Madison at Ocoee

Vera grew up in New York. She was married to Harry Ercolani until his passing in May 2005.

Vera is a proud mother of two children. Dr. Louis Ercolani, Vera’s son, is a Nephrologist at Boston Massachusetts General Hospital and lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He is happily married to Maeve McNally and has four grown children: Matthew, Mae, Miles, and Keelin.

Donna Payne, Vera’s daughter, is happily married to Ross Payne. Donna has two grown children, William Kosloski and Kathleen Kosloski. William lives in Tallahassee and works for the Auditor General. Kathleen is a registered nurse and will graduate with her Bachelors degree in Nursing. Donna Payne has worked for Valencia College for 25 years.

Vera also has great grand children, Siena Rose Ercolani, daughter of Matthew Ercolani. Vera also has two other great grand children from her grand daughter Mae.

After Vera retired from her job in New York, serving the City’s rent control office, she retired to Port St. Lucie, Florida and learned how to play golf. Vera was an avid golfer and got a hole in one during a championship with her ladies golf group in Clermont, Florida.

Vera was a great Italian cook with specialties of lasagna, eggplant parmigiana, and home-made manicotti.

No matter the circumstances Vera always is cheerful and pleasant. Vera fills the world with love and is loved by all.
