Australian Joy
Alexa, play Down Under, by Men at work.
Released in 1981, “Down Under” quickly became a defining song of Australian identity. With its catchy flute riff and witty lyrics, it celebrates the country’s laid-back spirit, humor, and pride. More than a global hit, it remains an unofficial anthem—an upbeat tribute to Australia’s culture, people, and sense of adventure.
Veterans Day
Veterans Day is celebrated every November 11 in the United States. Veterans Day 2025 is Tuesday, November 11, 2025. This annual federal holiday honors those who served in the United States Armed Forces. Why November 11th?
Veterans Day is observed on November 11 in commemoration of the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Hostilities officially ended in 1918 at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month.
Formerly called “Armistice Day,” the holiday was originally intended to honor veterans of the First World War. Later, the meaning of the holiday was expanded to include all US military who served in either wartime or peacetime.
Welcome to Australia
Around the World with Atlas
Australia, the world’s largest island and smallest continent, is a land of striking contrasts—from its vast deserts and tropical rainforests to its bustling coastal cities. Indigenous Australians have lived on the continent for over 60,000 years, developing rich spiritual traditions and deep connections to the land. Their art, music, and stories remain an essential part of the nation’s cultural identity today.
European settlement began in 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet from Britain, marking the start of Australia’s colonial era. British influence shaped the nation’s language, institutions, and political systems, though this period also brought immense hardship to Indigenous communities. Over time, Australia evolved from a collection of colonies into a unified federation in 1901, forging its own democratic and multicultural identity.
Modern Australia is known for its relaxed lifestyle, love of the outdoors, and vibrant cultural mix. From iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Uluru to its world-class art, music, and sport, the country reflects both its ancient heritage and modern dynamism—a place where tradition and innovation coexist under the southern sun.
Mental Health in Senior Living During the Holidays
The holidays can be particularly challenging for seniors, as they may experience increased feelings of loneliness, grief, and loss. These emotions can exacerbate mental health issues, leading to symptoms such as depression, anxiety, and cognitive decline. It is crucial for seniors to seek support and maintain healthy habits during this time. Here are some strategies to help seniors manage their mental health during the holidays:
Encourage and facilitate social activities: Engaging in group activities can help seniors connect with others and reduce feelings of isolation.
Make communication a priority: In-person visits or virtual connections can make a significant difference in seniors’ mental health during the holiday season.
Set boundaries: It’s important for seniors to establish healthy boundaries to avoid feeling overwhelmed by holiday responsibilities.
Make time to connect: Seniors should prioritize their relationships and connect with themselves through self-care and meaningful connections.
By implementing these strategies, seniors can enjoy the holidays while maintaining their mental health and well-being.
Activities to keep yourself busy during the holidays
Here are some holiday activities for seniors that can be enjoyable and engaging:
Baking and Decorating: Involve seniors in baking holiday treats and decorating cookies or cakes.
Virtual Parties: Host virtual gatherings with family and friends to celebrate together, especially if in-person meetings are not possible.
Crafting: Engage in holiday-themed crafts, such as making ornaments or holiday cards.
Storytelling: Encourage seniors to share holiday memories or stories, fostering connection and reminiscence.
Outdoor Activities: If possible, organize outdoor activities like a holiday walk or a small gathering in a garden.
These activities can help seniors feel included, joyful, and connected during the holiday season

Recipe of the Month
Thanksgiving Stuffing
Ingredients
2 lb. crusty country bread (about 2 loaves), preferably sourdough, cut into 1 1/2″ pieces
6 Tbsp. unsalted butter, divided, plus more for dish
1 large yellow onion, chopped
2 medium leeks, tough outer layer removed, thinly sliced into half-moons
4 cloves garlic, finely chopped
Kosher salt
Freshly ground black pepper
2 large eggs
2 1/2 cups low-sodium chicken broth
1 1/2 cups whole milk
2 Tbsp. mixed chopped fresh herbs, such as sage, rosemary, and/or thyme
Pinch of crushed red pepper flakes
Directions
Step 1
Preheat oven to 350°. Spread bread between 2 baking sheets. Bake bread, tossing halfway through, until crispy and feels dry and the edges are just starting to turn golden, 15 to 20 minutes.
Step 2
Meanwhile, in a medium skillet over medium heat, melt 3 Tbsp. butter. Cook onion and leeks, stirring occasionally, until softened, about 7 minutes. Add garlic and cook, stirring, until fragrant, about 1 minute more; season with salt and black pepper. Let cool slightly.
Step 3
In a medium bowl or large glass measuring cup, whisk eggs, broth, milk, herbs, and red pepper; generously season with salt and black pepper.
Step 4
Increase oven temperature to 375°. Grease a 13″ x 9″ baking dish with a thin layer of butter.
Step 5
Transfer bread to a very large bowl. Add onion mixture and egg mixture and toss to combine. Let sit at least 10 minutes or up to 1 hour.
Step 6
Transfer bread mixture to prepared dish and spread in an even layer, making sure all liquid makes it into dish. Cut remaining 3 Tbsp. butter into small pieces and dot over top. Cover with foil.
Step 7
Bake stuffing 20 minutes. Uncover and continue to bake until top is golden brown and crisp, 25 to 30 minutes more. Serve warm or at room temperature.
Let brownies cool fully before decorating to prevent melted chocolate from running. This helps lift the brownies out cleanly for slicing and decorating. Use a sandwich bag, piping bag or spoon to drizzle the white chocolate evenly. Keep an eye on bake time for fudgy, moist brownies with chewy edges. Bring eggs and chocolate to room temperature for a smoother batter.
