Associate of the Month
Melanie Garcia
Meet Melanie G., our January Employee of the Month. Melanie was born in Atlanta, Georgia, alongside her older sister, a younger brother, and a younger sister. During high school, Melanie played volleyball and basketball, but due to COVID-19, she had to transition to online schooling. She is a member of the class of 2020. Melanie met her boyfriend in high school, and they have two sons, Dylan, who is three, and Santiago, who is one.
One of Melanie’s most empowering experiences from her youth that continues to inspire her today is spending quality family time every Sunday, fostering a sense of connection that she prioritizes by keeping at least one day off from work to create meaningful memories with her loved ones. One of her favorite destinations that will forever hold a special place in her heart is Mexico, a country she describes as breathtakingly beautiful and profoundly peaceful. The allure of authentic Mexican cuisine, which she believes is exponentially more delicious in its country of origin, is an added bonus, as is the opportunity to reunite with her family and strengthen their bond.
In her free time, Melanie discovers her passions and pursues them with unrelenting enthusiasm, whether gardening, shopping, baiting, or playing arcade games. As a devoted DIYer, Melanie embodies the spirit of self-sufficiency, tackling every challenge with unwavering determination. Her remarkable achievements serve as a testament to her perseverance, and she finds profound fulfillment in the knowledge that she has earned everything she has. The fruits of her labor, including her car and home, stand as poignant reminders of her unyielding work ethic. Melanie’s love for cooking knows no bounds, and she finds immense joy in preparing delectable tacos and grilled delights. Her heart swells with pride as she reflects on her ability to provide for her loved ones, and she finds her greatest sense of accomplishment in being a devoted mother.
Melanie, we thank you all from here at Legacy Ridge at Brookstone for consistently demonstrating unwavering determination, unrelenting work ethic and profound compassion towards our residents. Your remarkable dedication is truly valued, and we eagerly anticipate many more years of excellence with you.

A Magical Start to the Year
January is a magical month filled with opportunities to celebrate fantasy, mystery, and imagination.
Appreciate a Dragon Day – January 16
In Eastern cultures, dragons symbolize wisdom, magic, and longevity, often representing power and leadership. Meanwhile, European cultures depict dragons as fearsome, fire-breathing creatures. These winged beasts are often associated with flight, perhaps explaining why the word dragon originates from a Greek word meaning “I see clearly”—as if dragons can survey the world from above.
Brew a Potion Day – January 19
Potions have long been believed to heal, enchant, or harm. In ancient times, traveling salesmen peddled so-called miracle cures, promising to fix any ailment. Even today, we see modern versions of these “potions” in infomercials advertising products to regrow hair, clear skin, or clean upholstery. Instead of buying into these claims, why not create your own magical recipe? Share your potion with someone you love on January 19!
Science Fiction Day – January 2
If fantasy isn’t your style, consider celebrating the wonders of science instead. Science fiction often blurs the line between the real and the impossible. Who could have predicted Mars rovers, skydiving from the edge of space, or pocket-sized computers? Yet, science fiction pushes us to imagine how advancements might lead to unexpected challenges—and even calamities.
Let Your Imagination Soar
This January, let your imagination take flight. Explore dragons, potions, and futuristic possibilities. And when February arrives, it will gently bring us back down to Earth.
Calling Gold Rush Gab
Dagnabbit, it’s time for Talk Like a Grizzled Prospector Day on January 24. You’ve never heard of it, you say? Perhaps you have heard of James Marshall, who, on January 24, 1848, discovered gold that started the California Gold Rush. Almost 100 years later, a farmer named Walter Knott built a western-themed ghost town on his berry farm. Knott’s Berry Farm drew a wide audience, thanks to its guarantee that anyone who found gold on the property as part of the “panning for gold” attraction could take it home. Every January 24, Knott’s Berry Farm holds its annual Prospector’s Day parade. So dadgummit, hitch up yer overalls, grab yer dumfungled pan, and get ready to pan the whole consarn territory for the sockdolager of payouts!

Resident of the Month
Don Miller
Meet Don M, our January resident of the month, an inspiration to us all. Don has lived in Omaha, Nebraska, and Sarasota, Florida, and his remarkable journey is a testament to his strength. As a retired US Army veteran, he has served our nation with honor and dedication. His work at a motor shop and as a skilled electrician by trade showcase his talent and perseverance. Don is blessed with a loving marriage to Verna M, and a special bond with his loyal companion, Harper, a lovable hound dog.
Don’s zest for life is contagious, as he revels in gaming with his wife, particularly Upwords, watching TV, especially sports, and unleashing his creativity by fixing things. His love for reading and solving puzzles on his Kindle is truly inspiring. With a heart full of adventure, he has embarked on multiple cruises and road trips throughout the USA, creating lifelong memories. His ultimate aspiration is to be surrounded by his loving family, including his wife, children, and grandchildren, and to craft lasting memories with them. One of his favorite things to collect is the Biggby Craftsman bear, and he generously shared his bear with us during our last show and tell.
Rails of Adventure
On January 17, Cable Car Day, cable cars all over the world will garner attention. Cable cars use cables to pull them up or lower them down. San Francisco’s iconic cable cars are moved by a system of cables underneath the street. The high-flying cable gondolas of Rio de Janeiro carry people to the Christ the Redeemer statue atop Mount Corcovado. The valley of Gulmarg—the Himalayan “meadow of flowers” in India’s Jammu and Kashmir regions—boasts the second-highest cable car ride at 13,500 feet. One of the longest cable car rides is in Switzerland’s Alps. The 19-minute journey from the village of Grindelwald to Männlichen allows visitors to enjoy the rugged Alps without a pair of hiking boots!
