Arianna Martinez
We’re excited to announce Arianna as our Associate of the Month for August! Arianna, a vital part of our Housekeeping team, has been with The Oscar for just over a year, and her dedication and warm spirit truly shine.
Arianna loves her daily interactions with our residents. Her favorite thing to do is talk with them and hear about their past, building genuine connections that brighten everyone’s day. She stays motivated by maintaining a positive attitude and keeping her schedule organized. Arianna manages the challenge of working on both the Assisted Living and Memory Care floors with remarkable grace, crediting the support of her coworkers for helping her “stay afloat.”
Arianna’s personal values perfectly align with The Oscar’s mission: she believes in treating residents as she would treat herself. She also emphasizes the importance of good communication among team members, understanding that it’s key to a harmonious and effective workplace.
Outside of work, Arianna cherishes quality time with her friends and family. Her mom and dad are incredibly important to her, as she considers them her best friends. Arianna prioritizes a healthy work-life balance, making a conscious effort to keep her personal life separate from her professional one.
With her consistently friendly face and genuine desire to connect, Arianna is a beloved member of our team and a wonderful presence in our community.
Please join us in congratulating Arianna on this well-deserved recognition!
English Heart
Alexa play "Cello Song" from "Nick Drake"
Delicate, melancholic, and deeply English, featured on his debut album Five Leaves Left, “Cello Song” from 1969, captures Nick Drake’s quiet brilliance. With virtuous fingerpicked guitar, a mournful cello, and poetic lyrics, it evokes misty mornings and introspective solitude. Though underappreciated in his lifetime, Drake’s music now echoes as a timeless emblem of true British folk.

Welcome to England
Around the World with Atlas
England’s story begins long before it was called by that name—when Celtic Britons inhabited its misty hills and Roman legions reached the edge of their empire in a land they called Britannia. Though Rome left its mark with roads, baths, and Hadrian’s Wall, the far north—home to fierce tribes and enigmatic druids—remained unconquered. After the Romans withdrew, waves of Saxon settlers shaped a new identity, giving birth to a nation where myth and history often blur.
At the heart of this early tapestry is the legend of King Arthur, the once and future king said to have united Britain with the help of Merlin the wizard, the sword Excalibur, and the noble Knights of the Round Table. Whether myth or memory, these tales reveal England’s deep-rooted fascination with destiny, honor, and the magic of storytelling—traditions that would shape its greatest literary voices.
From the poetic grandeur of Shakespeare to the epic realms of J.R.R. Tolkien and the modern wizarding world of J.K. Rowling, English literature has enchanted readers across centuries. And in music, few countries have left such a global imprint. With sounds ranging from the rebellious rock of The Rolling Stones to the dreamscapes of Pink Floyd, and the timeless genius of The Beatles and David Bowie, England’s cultural output is as powerful and enduring as its history.
S'more Fun to Be Had!
Get ready for some classic summer fun as we celebrate National Toasted Marshmallow Day! What better way to bid farewell to the warmer months than with delicious, gooey s’mores and delightful company?
Join us on Saturday, August 31st, at 6:00 PM in the Courtyard. We’ll have all the fixings for perfect s’mores, along with refreshing drinks and plenty of opportunity for small talk and laughter. It’s the ideal way to enjoy a wonderful evening as summer winds down.

Cooking with Confidence with Chef David
Blueberry Scones

Ingredients:
2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest (from 1 medium lemon)
1/3 cup granulated sugar
2 cups all-purpose flour, plus more for shaping
2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
8 tablespoons (1 stick) cold unsalted butter
1 1/4 cups fresh or frozen blueberries (do not thaw, about 5 1/2 ounces)
1 cup cold heavy cream
1 teaspoon kosher salt
1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted if lumpy
1 tablespoon freshly squeezed lemon juice (from 1/2 medium lemon)
Directions:
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
Place 2 teaspoons finely grated lemon zest and 1/3 cup granulated sugar in a large bowl and rub the zest into the sugar with your fingers until fragrant. Whisk in 2 cups all-purpose flour and 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder.
Grate 1 stick cold unsalted butter on the large holes of a box grater directly into the flour mixture. Toss with your hands to incorporate the butter into the flour, breaking up any large flakes of butter. Add 1 1/4 cups blueberries and toss to combine.
Measure out 1 cup cold heavy cream in a liquid measuring cup, add 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and stir until the salt is dissolved. Drizzle over the flour mixture and stir with a flexible spatula until the cream is absorbed. Gather into a ball and place on a work surface lightly dusted with flour. Gather and firmly pat the dough to incorporate all the loose flour and form a cohesive mass.
Pat the dough into a 1-inch-thick-round about 7 inches wide. Cut into 8 wedges. Transfer the wedges to the baking sheet, spacing them evenly apart. Freeze while the oven heats, about 15 minutes. Heat the oven to 400°F.
Bake until light golden-brown, 22 to 25 minutes. Let cool for 5 minutes on the baking sheet. Transfer to a wire rack and let cool completely, about 30 minutes.
Whisk 1/2 cup powdered sugar and 1 tablespoon lemon juice together in a small bowl until smooth. Drizzle over the cooled scones in a zigzag pattern and let sit until the glaze hardens, about 15 minutes.
Resident of the Month
June Dunn
We’re delighted to announce June Dunn as our Resident of the Month for July! June truly embodies the vibrant and engaging spirit of The Oscar, and we’re so happy to celebrate her remarkable life and contributions to our community.
June is an incredibly active member here, whether she’s participating in exercise classes, making welcome cards, or getting into character for our popular murder mystery dinners. Her zest for life is contagious! When she’s not engaging with friends, you can often find June pursuing her favorite hobbies, including sewing, quilting, making intricate costumes, baking delicious Christmas cookies, and singing.
Living at The Oscar, she cherishes the privacy of her home while also enjoying the convenience of having friends and neighbors just outside her door. June values the safe, independent living that gives her family peace of mind, knowing she’s surrounded by a supportive community. She eagerly embraces the many opportunities available here, frequently attending musicals, joining the welcome group card-making sessions, playing card games and board games, and participating in art classes. As June puts it, she’s “thankful to keep busy!”
June’s life story is as rich and full as her days here. Raised on a cotton farm in northeast Texas, she was the oldest of five children and fondly remembers big family Christmas gatherings every year. Throughout her life, June has achieved so much. She is most proud of raising three successful daughters, being recognized in her hometown of Commerce, TX, for her outstanding achievements, and her incredible resilience in being able to start over again when tragedy came her way. Her professional background includes managing the Chamber of Commerce in Commerce, TX, being a dedicated homemaker, and volunteering at hospital facilities.
For June, the security and happiness of her loved ones are what truly make her happy. When asked what she enjoys most about living at The Oscar, June shared her appreciation for the good food selection, the comforting knowledge that someone always “has her back,” and the reassurance that help is just a phone call away.
Please join us in congratulating June on this well-deserved recognition! We’re incredibly fortunate to have her as a cherished member of The Oscar community.
