Associate of the Month
Sara Snyder
Congratulations to Sara Snyder!
This month, we shine the spotlight on our wonderful Lifestyles Coordinator, Sara Snyder! Sara has been an integral part of The Oscar family since June 2025, and we are so lucky to have her!
After leaving a fast-paced career in sales, Sara was looking for a role that would truly fulfill her passion for helping others—and she found it here!
Her favorite part of the job is getting to know every resident: learning about their lives, their passions, and their incredible histories. Sara enjoys leading many of our most popular activities, including morning walks, Bingo, Sit & Be Fit, and arts and crafts.
Sara stays motivated by starting every day with a positive outlook and a simple, powerful philosophy: treating everyone the way she wants to be treated. Her biggest challenge is simply making enough time for every resident, which she manages expertly with the help of her reliable alarms!
After only four months, Sara already has countless favorite memories with our residents. She says her most enjoyable moments are simply spending time listening to their stories—she believes they offer the best life advice.
When asked what makes a great team member, Sara highlights key qualities: someone who is kind, compassionate, caring, and willing to go the extra mile. Her advice to any new employee is simple: “Jump right in and do whatever you can for whoever you can!”
Outside of work, Sara enjoys spending time with her husband, Justin, their three children (Kaela, Paxton, and Kamdyn), and their two cats, Trinket and Penelope. She also loves fishing and is an avid thrift shopper!
Perhaps the most heartwarming fact about Sara is that she refers to all our residents as “my friends.” She truly views them as an impactful part of her journey, brightening her days just as friends should.
Thank you, Sara, for bringing such energy, kindness, and dedication to our community. We appreciate you going above and beyond for everyone at The Oscar!
Australian Joy
Alexa, play Down Under, by Men at work.
Released in 1981, “Down Under” quickly became a defining song of Australian identity. With its catchy flute riff and witty lyrics, it celebrates the country’s laid-back spirit, humor, and pride. More than a global hit, it remains an unofficial anthem—an upbeat tribute to Australia’s culture, people, and sense of adventure.
Honoring Heroes: Veterans Day Cookoff & Celebration!
Join us as we pause to give thanks and honor the brave men and women who have served our country at our Veterans Day Cookoff & Celebration! This is a special day dedicated to recognizing the service and sacrifice of our resident Veterans.
A Day of Food, Music, and Honor
We have planned a fantastic afternoon packed with activities to show our gratitude:
Delicious Cookout: Enjoy an amazing selection of classic cookout food designed to thank our heroes.
Patriotic Music: Tap your toes to the beloved Freddie the Singing Cowboy, who will be performing live, featuring some of his own patriotic songs!
Scout Support: We are proud to have local Scouts joining us to assist in pinning our Veterans, a special way to show respect.
The Formal Tribute
We will take a meaningful moment during the celebration to formally honor our Veterans. We invite each Veteran to stand so we can introduce you and recognize your branch of service.
The festivities will conclude with a solemn and meaningful moment of silence to remember and respect those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our freedom.
Let's Give Back: The Oscar Canned Food Drive!
In the spirit of “Thankful Thursday,” we are looking to extend the warmth and generosity of The Oscar at Georgetown out into our local community. We are excited to announce our Canned Food Drive partnering with “A Caring Place” to support those in need this season.
How to Donate:
The drive will run from Friday, October 31st, through Wednesday, December 3rd.
Large blue donation drums will be placed in key locations around the community for easy drop-offs.
Items Most Needed: While any non-perishable donation is appreciated, “A Caring Place” is currently in the greatest need of:
- Canned Vegetables
- Non-Perishable Breakfast Items (e.g., cereal, oatmeal, shelf-stable milk)
Let’s show the community how much the Oscar cares by filling these drums! Every donation makes a real difference.
We look forward to your generous participation!
Welcome to Germany

Welcome to Australia
Around the World with Atlas
Australia, the world’s largest island and smallest continent, is a land of striking contrasts—from its vast deserts and tropical rainforests to its bustling coastal cities. Indigenous Australians have lived on the continent for over 60,000 years, developing rich spiritual traditions and deep connections to the land. Their art, music, and stories remain an essential part of the nation’s cultural identity today.
European settlement began in 1788 with the arrival of the First Fleet from Britain, marking the start of Australia’s colonial era. British influence shaped the nation’s language, institutions, and political systems, though this period also brought immense hardship to Indigenous communities. Over time, Australia evolved from a collection of colonies into a unified federation in 1901, forging its own democratic and multicultural identity.
Modern Australia is known for its relaxed lifestyle, love of the outdoors, and vibrant cultural mix. From iconic landmarks like the Sydney Opera House and Uluru to its world-class art, music, and sport, the country reflects both its ancient heritage and modern dynamism—a place where tradition and innovation coexist under the southern sun.
G'Day Mates! Celebrate Australia Day at The Oscar!
Get ready to say “G’Day!” and join us for a fun, festive, and flavorful celebration as we take our tastebuds down under! This month, we’re celebrating the Country of Australia with a special cookout: Shrimp (or Prawns!) on the Barbie! When: Saturday, November 15th at 1:30 PM Where: The Courtyard.
Fun Fact Corner: Shrimp vs. Prawns!
Did you know that while Australians actually call them prawns, the common phrase was switched to Shrimp on the Barbie just to avoid confusion with American visitors? Whether you call them shrimp or prawns, one thing is for sure—they’re going to be delicious!
Come enjoy an afternoon of great food, sunny spirits, and even better company as we celebrate all things Australian!
We look forward to seeing you in the Courtyard!

Recipe of the Month
Aussie Sausage Rolls
Ingredients:
1 medium onion, finely chopped
2 tablespoons minced fresh chives or 2 teaspoons dried chives
2 teaspoons minced fresh basil or 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
2 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon paprika, divided
1-1/4 pounds bulk pork sausage
1 package (17.3 ounces) frozen puff pastry, thawed
Directions:
Preheat oven to 350°. Combine first 6 ingredients and 3/4 teaspoon paprika. Add sausage; mix lightly but thoroughly. On a lightly floured surface, roll each pastry sheet into an 11×10-1/2-in. rectangle. Cut each lengthwise into 3 strips. Spread 1/2 cup sausage mixture lengthwise down the center of each strip. Fold sides over filling, pinching edges to seal. Cut each log into 6 pieces.
Place on a rack in a 15x10x1-in. pan, seam side down. Sprinkle with remaining 1/4 teaspoon paprika. Bake until golden brown and sausage is no longer pink, 20-25 minutes.
Resident of the Month
Joan King
Congratulations to Joan King!
We are thrilled to celebrate Joan King as our esteemed Resident of the Month! Joan brings a wonderful spirit and warm presence to our community every day.
Joan grew up in Dallas, Texas, and later attended TCU. After marrying, she devoted herself to her roles as wife and mother, calling it some of her happiest times. She shared many cherished memories, including her beautiful wedding, the exciting day she was able to officially welcome her adopted daughter, and her many wonderful cruises.
Joan enjoyed 62 happy years of marriage and raised an amazing daughter, Kristie, who remains a constant source of support and connection for the family. Joan fondly remembers her childhood as happy and full of love, thanks to her wonderful parents. One of her favorite travel adventures was cruising around the islands of Hawaii.
Joan has shown incredible resilience. One of her most difficult challenges was breaking her hip after a fall. She overcame this obstacle quickly, thanks to the support of a dear friend and her daughter’s prompt action in helping her move closer to care.
After living briefly in Baltimore, Maryland, and then in Missouri City, Joan made the decision to move to The Oscar to be closer to her daughter.
Since moving here, Joan has found that the best part of living at The Oscar is meeting all the friendly people. From residents to staff, she notes that everyone is helpful and welcoming. She cherishes having others close by to chat with, especially since her husband’s passing.
Joan stays busy enjoying many of her favorite pastimes, including Bridge, Hand & Foot Canasta, Rummy, Bingo, and playing cards. Before moving, she also loved shopping, group lunches, and seeing plays. She especially appreciates that the staff here are always available, helpful, and greet everyone with a smile.
Joan chose The Oscar for its overall feeling of openness, its wide, bright halls, the theater room, and the indoor pool.
When asked about the most important thing she has learned in life, Joan’s answer is simple and profound: “Always treat others with kindness, no matter what they say or do.”
And her best advice for anyone considering moving to a senior living community? It’s simple: “Get out and meet people! Participate in different activities to meet others.”
When asked if she is happy, Joan simply smiled and said, “I’m happy all the time. I always try to be happy.” Her happiness shines brightest when she is playing games or visiting with friends!
Joan truly embodies the spirit of The Oscar with treating everyone with kindness.
