Associate of the Month
Jessica Hernandez
Please join us in celebrating our Associate of the Month, Jessica Hernandez! In just three months, Jessica has become an essential part of The Oscar team, and we are so proud to recognize her for her outstanding work and positive attitude.
Jessica was drawn to The Oscar because she was looking for a position that was both fun and personal, and she has truly found that here. The part of her job she enjoys most is getting to know all of our wonderful residents. She loves talking with each of them about their day and finds her motivation in genuinely caring for everyone and helping you have the best day possible. We are so grateful for the smile and great attitude she brings to work every single day.
Jessica appreciates her coworkers and believes that a great team member is someone who is always willing to go the extra mile to help others. Outside of work, she enjoys spending quality time with her family and friends. Her hobbies include cooking, fishing, crafting, boating, and traveling. Jessica balances her work and personal life with a lot of planning and the wonderful support she gets from her family.
The most important people in her life are her husband of 19 years, Shawn, their three children—Alyssa, Brayden, and Cole—and their dog, Bear.
Thank you, Jessica, for all you do to make The Oscar such a special place to live and work. We are so lucky to have her as part of our community!
Scottish Heart
Alexa play "Sun" from "Donovan"
Appearing on Donovan’s 1967 double album A Gift from a Flower to a Garden fused psychedelic folk with childlike wonder, marking him as a true Scottish poet-storyteller.
The song is a radiant hymn to light and life, this track captures Donovan’s blend of psychedelic vision and folk simplicity.

Welcome to Scotland
Around the World with Atlas
Scotland: The Land Beyond the Wall
When the Roman Empire pushed north into Britannia, it met fierce tribes the legions could never conquer. To mark the limit of their reach, the Romans built Hadrian’s Wall, and further north, the Antonine Wall — yet beyond lay the untamed lands we now call Scotland.
By the 8th century, Scotland began to take shape as a kingdom, often in conflict with its southern neighbor, England. Centuries of wars, heroes like William Wallace, and an enduring sense of independence defined its story. In 1707, Scotland formally united with England, creating Great Britain, which later grew into the United Kingdom alongside Ireland.
Still today, Scotland remains proudly distinct — with its Gaelic roots, tartans, castles, and legendary landscapes reminding the world of a culture that was never fully subdued.
A Morning of Peace and Tranquility: Singing Bowl Sound Bath
Join us for a truly unique and relaxing experience! We are excited to invite you to a Singing Bowl Sound Bath Meditation with certified sound healer, Kathie.
On Tuesday, September 9th, at 10:30 a.m., the Theater will be transformed into a peaceful sanctuary. Immerse yourself in the gentle, resonating sounds of singing bowls, designed to guide you into a state of deep relaxation and inner peace.
A sound bath is a restorative experience that helps quiet the mind and body. The soothing vibrations can help to:
- Improve your mood
- Reduce stress and anxiety
- Provide a deeper sense of tranquility
- Promote profound meditation and wellness
- Decrease Pain
This is a wonderful opportunity to rest, renew, and discover a new path to serenity. We hope to see you there for this special morning of sound and tranquility.

Cooking with Confidence with Chef David
Buttermilk Roast Chicken

Ingredients:
12 chicken drumsticks
450ml buttermilk
60ml plus 2 tbsp vegetable oil
2 cloves garlic, bruised and skins removed
1 tbsp crushed peppercorns
1 tbsp sea salt or 1 1/2 tsp table salt
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp maple syrup
Instructions:
1) Place the chicken drumsticks in a large freezer bag and add the buttermilk and 60ml of oil. Add the bruised garlic cloves to the bag with the crushed peppercorns and salt.
2) Sprinkle in the ground cumin and finally add the maple syrup and then squish everything in the freezer bag around to mix the marinade and coat the chicken.
3) Leave the buttermilk-marinated chicken in the fridge ideally overnight, or out of the fridge for at least 30 minutes and up to 2 hours. Preheat the oven to 220C/gas mark 7.
4) Take the chicken pieces out of the bag, shaking off the excess marinade, and arrange them in a roasting tin lined with foil. Drizzle over the 2-remaining tbsp of oil.
5) Roast in the oven for about 30 minutes, or until brown, even scorched in parts, and juicily cooked through. Serve hot with vegetables of choice.
Resident of the Month
Louise King
Please join us in celebrating our Resident of the Month, Louise King! Louise is a shining example of the heart and soul of The Oscar, and we are so proud to honor her.
When asked what she loves most about living here, Louise’s answer is simple and beautiful: the people. She says our community feels like a true family, where everyone looks out for one another—a feeling that drew her to The Oscar in the first place. Her best advice to anyone considering a move to a senior living community is to take your time, visit different places, and talk to the residents to get their honest opinions.
Louise stays busy and engaged by enjoying our many activities, especially our happy hours, Pinochle games (a card game she hadn’t played since her youth!), and our exercise groups. Outside of The Oscar, she loves to go antiquing, wine tasting, and traveling. Some of her most cherished memories include the annual Fourth of July celebrations she and her husband hosted at their home on Lake Conroe, which were all about quality family time.
Born and raised in Michigan, Louise moved to Texas in the late ’60s. She met her loving husband in 1984, and they’ve been married for 41 wonderful years. She is most proud of her four amazing children and feels truly blessed by her family. Louise credits her strong faith and her husband, who has been her rock, for helping her through life’s challenges. She finds her greatest fulfillment in seeing her husband and children happy and feels that being surrounded by such wonderful people at The Oscar fills her with joy every day.
We are so fortunate to have Louise as part of our community. Her warmth, love of family, and strong faith are an inspiration to us all.
