Associate of the Month

Traci Claypool

We are delighted to announce Traci Claypool, Caregiver at The Oscar, as our Employee of the Month for June!
Traci joined The Oscar in January 2025, seeking a new career opportunity, and she has quickly become an invaluable member of our team. What she cherishes most about her role are the deep connections she forms with our residents and her fellow staff members. Traci finds immense joy in simply talking and listening to our residents, particularly within memory care. She recognizes that each resident is special, and she discovers truly precious moments in every interaction, finding their humanity strong even when their minds might be challenged. Her dedication to taking each day one step at a time is truly inspiring.
Traci deeply appreciates The Oscar’s commitment to open communication and growth, noting how well it aligns with her personal values of ensuring residents are treated fairly and like family. When asked for advice for new employees, Traci emphasizes the importance of asking questions, staying true to oneself and others, and understanding that communication and documentation are essential.
Traci begins her days with prayers and an open mind. Outside of work, she leads a fulfilling life, enjoying hiking, arts and crafts, camping, traveling, and even soap making! She strives for a healthy work-life balance by focusing on what truly matters and leaving work at work. The most important people in her life are God, her husband, her children, and her grandchildren.
Please join us in congratulating Traci Claypool on this well-deserved recognition!

Sounds of Peru

Alexa play "El Condor Pasa" from "Mariachi Vargas de Tecalitlán"

“El Cóndor Pasa” is so iconic that, in 2004, Peru declared it part of the nation’s cultural heritage. The original version is an orchestral piece from the 1913 zarzuela El Cóndor Pasa, composed by Peruvian musician Daniel Alomía Robles and inspired by traditional Andean music.

In this beautiful rendition, from 1988, Mariachi Vargas takes this iconic piece and gracefully infuses it with the soul of Mexican mariachi, the piece honors that precious majesty of the Andes spirit but also reimagining it through their signature instrumentation and emotion-rich style.

Cooking with Confidence with Chef David

Oven- Baked Sweet Plantains

Oven- Baked Sweet Plantains

There’s no better way to start or end your Peruvian meal with a nice snack of oven-baked plantains. These tasty and sweet snacks can be found throughout Peru. With just one ingredient and a small bit of cooking time, this is one of the easy Peruvian recipes that anyone can make and enjoy at home. For a dessert twist, try adding a little cinnamon or icing sugar on top of the caramelized plantain!

Ingredients:
4 very ripe plantains. Look for yellow skin with black spots.

Instructions:
Preheat oven to 450°F
Coat a nonstick cookie sheet with cooking spray
Peel the plantains and trim the ends
Cut the plantain horizontally into 1/2 inch slides
Arrange the plantains on the cooking spray in a single layer.
Coat the top of the bananas with cooking spray.
Bake for 10-15 minutes turning occasionally.
They should be done when the plantains are soft and have a golden-brown crisp on the ends.

Resident of the Month

Carol Saxen

Hailing from Santa Barbara, California, Carol’s life has always been marked by a profound dedication to helping others. She generously volunteered for five years with the Copperopolis Five Man Fire Department, serving as a CERT and a non-EMT first responder. Additionally, she spent two days a week at a local Hospice Thrift Store, managing the linen department, while her husband Frank, a semi-retired independent insurance broker, worked from home.
Carol’s move to Georgetown, TX, was orchestrated by her daughter, Kimberlee, who flew Carol from California to Texas, twice, to bring her closer. Yet, the final push came from an unexpected source: a casual chat at a garage sale with another Oscar resident! Impressed by the glowing reviews, Carol’s daughter quickly presented her with a brochure, and within two days, Carol was ready to sign her lease here at The Oscar.
Moving into senior living came with its anxieties for Carol, who worried about restrictions, costs, and losing her independence. As a widow, she also feared loneliness and not fitting in. However, The Oscar has proven all her worries wrong. “I’m happily surprised to be feeling alive again and feeling like I’ve found my tribe!” Carol exclaimed. “People make a choice to be happy or not, and I’ve found my happy people here.”
While Carol treasures her quiet days engrossed in a good book, she’s also thrilled to dive into almost all of The Oscar’s special events. From engaging music performances and comforting church services to thrilling mystery dinners, vibrant courtyard parties, creative art classes, and even unique olive oil infusions, she embraces it all. She especially loves our fun-filled costume cocktail happy hours! Outside of The Oscar, Carol continues her passion for volunteering at the serene Georgetown Rock Ride Center for kids and Veterans.
Carol’s family is a central part of her life. She and her husband, Frank, built a beautiful legacy with a combined 8 children, 9 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren (and counting!).
We are so glad to have Carol’s warm presence and enthusiastic spirit enriching our community.
