Associate of the Month

Jolesia Barber

My name is Jolesia Barber, and I am currently a server at the Goldton in Adelaide. My journey here has been both fulfilling and transformative. I first joined the Goldton as a server in 2022, and after a brief hiatus, I came back in 2024. Being apart of this community has been a rewarding experience as the residents truly are a joy to be around. Working as a food server often comes with misconceptions. Many people think that being a server is simply about taking orders and delivering meals. However, my role encompasses much more than that. It involves building relationships and creating a welcoming environment for the residents. I take pride in knowing that my efforts can help to make their day a little brighter.

In addition to working at the a Goldton , I am a full time student at Mississippi University for Women, where I will be obtaining my degree in Public Health on May 9th, 2025.

In my spare time you can catch me traveling and enjoying a little sunshine.

8 Proven Tips to Age Gracefully

8 Proven Tips to Age Gracefully
8 Proven Tips to Age Gracefully

You might think you have little control over how you age. Many factors, after all, affect aging. Genetics is one of them.
But while you can’t change your genes, you can change your habits. And that may go a long way toward keeping you healthy as you age, says Michael Roizen, MD. He’s the chief wellness officer emeritus at Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and author and founder of the Great Age Reboot program.

That’s good news, especially when you consider that people around the world are living longer. Aging gracefully –– by prioritizing your physical and mental wellness –– can put you on a path to a longer, fuller life.
What does it mean to age gracefully?
Responses will vary because there isn’t an agreed-upon definition of aging gracefully. So how does an aging expert answer this question? “I see it more as spending time acting as a genetic engineer for your health and engaging in your passions,” Roizen says.

That means doing what you can to minimize health risks and stay independent as long as possible. It also means enriching your life with the people and things you love to maintain your mental and emotional well-being.

Although certain challenges come with getting older, there are also unique benefits, like more wisdom and free time to spend with family or pursue hobbies. Some research shows that older adults can manage their emotions better than younger peers. And a positive outlook on life may even help you live longer.

To grow older gracefully, consider the following tips:
-Take care of your skin.
-Exercise regularly to lower your risk of diseases and maintain mobility.
-Mind your diet.
-Prioritize mental health.
-Stay physically active.
-Manage stress.
-Quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption.
-Get enough sleep.

Greek Heritage
Around the World with Atlas

Greece, the cradle of Western civilization, is a land where ancient history, breathtaking landscapes, and vibrant culture come together. From the awe-inspiring ruins of the Acropolis of Athens, where the Parthenon stands as a symbol of classical Greece, to the mystical sanctuary of Delphi, once considered the center of the world in ancient times, Greece is rich in heritage and mystical past.

The whitewashed cliffs of Santorini showcase Mediterranean charm. Whether exploring ancient ruins, sun-drenched islands, or dramatic landscapes, Greece captivates with its timeless beauty and profound legacy.

The Goldton at Adeliade Reviews

The Goldton at Adeliade Reviews

“When my dad could no longer live independently, my sister and I made assisted living arrangements at The Goldton. Every day he comments that, “They’re so good to me”. Though he still misses his home, he is very happy with his apartment, his meals, and most of all his care from the staff. They check on him regularly and constantly try to get him out of his room more often. The integrated Physical Therapy unit is only a few doors down from Dad, and Todd has been amazing in relieving his pain, working on his balance, and encouraging him.

We absolutely recommend The Goldton to anyone, but especially families like us who live close by. Being able get over to him in minutes makes visiting and checking on him so easy.”

“The Goldton at Adelaide has been the perfect setting for my dad. Everyone is so kind to him, the food is delicious, and there are so many activities to keep him occupied. The facilities are beautiful and are well-maintained, and the staff makes us all feel like family. It gives me great peace of mind to know that he can live independently while having excellent care available when needed.”

“This beautiful community is so impressive! The staff is friendly and caring to all the residents!”

Animals and Dementia

Animals and Dementia

Animals bring joy to us all – they’re playful, cute and cuddly. Pets can be a great source of routine, purpose and reassurance, especially when you’re feeling low.

It’s no surprise, then, that our furry friends can have an amazing knack for reducing anxiety, improving mood and encouraging communication and engagement in people with dementia.

Harry, the reassuring rescue cat

For Jan, her cat Harry – who she describes as ‘the most beautiful cat on the planet’ brought a similar kind of comfort to her parents, both of whom had dementia. “Both Mum and Dad smiled more when Harry was present, and this then reduced their confusion, encouraged conversation and livened their moods,” Jan explains. “Harry would cuddle up in Dad’s lap for hours – he was always much calmer when Harry lay there and purred.”

Harry comforted Jan’s dad as he neared the end of his life. “During Dad’s last two weeks he was in bed in terrible pain, and would at times be very confused and distressed. Harry hardly left him. If Harry did leave, Dad would ask where he had gone, but Harry would soon come back and Dad would calm down,” Jan recalls. “I even believe that Harry’s presence had an effect on Dad’s pain as he would visibly relax and then often fall asleep, usually with Harry on top of him.”
Jan’s mum’s dementia developed more gradually over several years, and Jan believes that Harry was aware of her developing frailty and became gentler in response to it.

“Harry was a stray cat who was found in a deserted building, covered in rat bites and near death,” Jan says. “We gave him love and a home, and in return he has learnt to love (and protect) us.”
