A life well lived

Reflecting on a life well lived can bring a mix of pride, gratitude, nostalgia, and sometimes, a touch of regret. It’s a beautiful thing to pause and look back, examining the moments, choices, and experiences that shaped who you are today. As the holidays approach and another year to look back on, it’s easy to reflect on a life well lived.

A life well lived is usually filled with stories—ones where you’ve succeeded, stumbled, learned, and grown. It’s often marked by deep connections: family, friends, perhaps children or grandchildren, people who added meaning to your journey. You may remember times of laughter and joy, moments that brought you to tears, and lessons you wouldn’t trade for anything.

This kind of reflection lets us see the impact we’ve had on others, the wisdom we’ve gathered along the way, and the things we’re grateful for. It’s a moment to celebrate the memories, the courage it took to make hard choices, the resilience through tough times, and the sheer joy in little moments of everyday life.

In the end, a life well lived isn’t about perfection. It’s about the effort, the love, the dreams, and the legacy you’ve left for others to cherish and build upon.

Veteran's Day

We are thrilled to share that our Veterans Day event for our Veterans in Senior Living was a resounding success! The day was filled with heartfelt moments as we honored and celebrated the service of these incredible individuals who have given so much for our country. The event included a flag ceremony, speeches of gratitude, and a special recognition for each Veteran in attendance. The joy and camaraderie shared among residents, families, and staff created lasting memories and deepened the sense of community here at The Canopy. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this Veterans Day so meaningful for our cherished Veterans.

Hurricane Evacuation

Hurricane Evacuation
Hurricane Evacuation

On Monday October 7th, we were all watching Hurricane Milton as projections showed the storm moving towards our area. Around 3:30pm that day, we got the word that Zone C was now a mandatory evacuation zone. During this time, we were doing everything we could to keep our families informed and practiced overcommunication so our families would not be worried about their loved ones. Below are some of their thanks to our Canopy Team and the great work they did, during a very difficult time:

Thanks for keeping everyone safe -Georgiana

That is wonderful news!! You and the team are doing an amazing job. Thank you for letting us know what’s going on. Travel safely!! – Sharon

What an incredible job you guys have done! – Kim

Thank you Canopy. Job well done. 🙃-Terry

So thankful for you all. Xoxo. Melanie

Thanks so much for the update. And thank you and the staff for taking on what we know was a herculean effort move everyone out of harm’s way and back again when the all clear was given. Not an easy task in any stretch of the imagination. It meant a lot to us that we did not have to worry about Gen’s safety during the hurricane. We knew she was in good hands. – Terry & Mark

Thank you all for everything you did to keep my mom and others safe during the storm. This was a well organized evacuation and the communication was great. I truly appreciate each and everyone of you for keeping our loved ones safe – Devon

Recipe Spotlight

Traditional Scones

Ingredients:
1 Egg
2 heaped teaspoons – Baking Powder
25 grams – Caster Sugar
1 heaped teaspoon – Vanilla Sugar (or caster sugar)
25 grams – Vegetable Shortening (or lard)
500 grams – Plain Flour
1 teaspoon – Salt (fine)
50 grams – Butter (unsalted)
250 milliliters – Heavy Whipping Cream (or double cream)
250 milliliters – Full Cream Milk
1 tablespoon – Milk

Directions:
Preheat the oven to 220°C (430°F) and place a baking tray inside to warm. Mix flour, salt, sugar, and baking powder in a bowl. Add butter and lard (or shortening), blending until it resembles damp sand. Gradually add milk, mixing until the dough just comes together. Avoid overworking the dough.

Roll the dough on a floured surface to about 3 cm (1 inch) thick. Cut scones with a round cutter, reshaping the dough gently if needed. Place scones close together on a baking tray. Brush with egg wash (beaten egg and milk). Bake for 10-15 minutes until golden. Check doneness with a thermometer (center should reach 85°C/185°F). Serve warm or at room temperature with Chantilly cream and strawberry jam.

Chantilly Cream: Whisk cream and sugar until soft peaks form.

The Benefits of animals interacting with our seniors

Pets and Seniors

Having pets visit our Community or having Pets here at our Community raises the spirits of everyone under our roof. Below are a few positives that happen when seniors spend time with animals.

Emotional Support and Companionship: Reduced Loneliness: Pets provide a sense of companionship, helping to combat loneliness and isolation, which are common among senior citizens.
Improved Mood: Interacting with animals can elevate mood, reduce feelings of depression, and help alleviate stress by increasing the production of “feel-good” hormones like serotonin and oxytocin.
Sense of Purpose: Caring for a pet gives seniors a sense of responsibility and purpose, which can be especially beneficial for those who are retired.
Cognitive Benefits: Enhanced Mental Stimulation: Engaging with pets can provide mental stimulation and help improve cognitive functions like memory and attention. For seniors with conditions like Alzheimer’s or dementia, animals can offer a sense of familiarity and comfort.
Therapeutic Effects: Pet therapy has been shown to improve cognitive function and emotional responses in individuals with dementia, offering positive sensory experiences.
Stress Reduction and Relaxation: Calming Effect: Simply petting an animal can trigger a calming effect and lower anxiety. This is especially valuable for seniors dealing with chronic pain, anxiety, or mental health issues.
Connection with Nature: For seniors who enjoy being around animals, this can provide a deeper connection to nature, which has been linked to increased overall well-being.
