His steadfast dedication and cheerful demeanor distinguish him as an invaluable asset to our team. Giovanni’s passion for bringing joy to our residents is truly inspiring. Whether it’s singing along with our Elvis impersonator or contributing to practical improvements like the new dog park crosswalk, he consistently goes above and beyond. This initiative not only enhances safety but also provides convenient access for our furry friends and their owners, enriching the community experience.
When it comes to motivation, Giovanni emphasizes the importance of teamwork. He believes that every member at Oscar brings unique expertise, enabling effective collaboration toward common goals. This sense of unity allows us to provide the best possible service to our residents, which is a cornerstone of our success. Giovanni also appreciates The Oscar as a remarkable workplace, largely due to the genuine care we all extend to our residents. This collective commitment fosters a nurturing and enriching environment for everyone involved.
Beyond work, Giovanni finds balance and renewal through exercise, meditation, and practicing shooting. These hobbies help him maintain focus and well-being in his life. Looking to the future, Giovanni harbors ambitious dreams of owning a vineyard and pursuing a career in acting. He encourages new team members to remain steadfast, reminding them that our residents depend on our dedication and care.

This Veterans Day, we at The Oscar are proud to honor and celebrate the brave men and women who have served our country. We recognize the sacrifices made by our veterans and their families, and we are committed to providing a supportive and appreciative community for them.
Join Us for the Sun City Veterans Ceremony
Join us for the Sun City Veterans Ceremony on November 11th at 10:00 AM. This significant event will pay tribute to the service and sacrifices of our nation’s heroes. If you’re interested in attending, please sign up using the registration sheet located in the communications room.
A Special Evening for Our Veterans. Later that evening, we will hold a private dinner for our esteemed veteran residents and spouses at The Oscar. This special occasion is set to commence at 5:00 PM and will showcase a delightful meal, sincere tributes, and chances for our veterans to bond with one another. We look forward to honoring our veterans and celebrating their contributions to our country.

Cowboy Stew
(Yellowstone Favorite)
Ingredients:
2 ancho chiles (¾ oz.), stems and seeds removed
2 chipotle chiles (¼ oz.), stems and seeds removed
2 plum tomatoes, halved
3 cloves garlic, unpeeled
1 medium white onion, halved and peeled
1/2 tsp. cumin seeds, toasted
1/2 c. water
Kosher salt
3 slices bacon, cut into ½” pieces
12 oz. kielbasa, cut into ½” rounds
12 oz. 95% lean ground beef
1/4 c. all-purpose flour
2 medium Yukon gold potatoes (12 oz.), peeled and cut into ½” pieces
4 c. low-sodium chicken broth
1 (15-oz.) can pinto beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/2 c. frozen corn
Crushed tortilla chips and chopped cilantro, for serving
Directions:
STEP 1
Preheat broiler with rack in upper third position. Place chiles on a baking sheet. Broil, flipping once, until charred all over, about 30 seconds. Transfer to a blender. Place tomatoes, garlic, and half the onion on baking sheet. Broil, flipping once, until charred and beginning to soften, 8 to 10 minutes. Peel garlic and add to blender along with tomatoes, onion, cumin, water, and 1½ teaspoons salt. Blend until smooth. You should have about 2 cups; set aside.
STEP 2
In a large pot over medium-high heat, cook bacon, stirring occasionally, until crisp, about 4 to 6 minutes. Drain on paper towels. Add kielbasa to pot in an even layer. Cook until browned on one side, 4 to 6 minutes. Flip and cook until browned on second side, another 3 minutes. Transfer to plate with bacon. Add beef to pot. Cook, breaking up meat with a spoon, until cooked, 5 to 7 minutes. Transfer to plate with bacon and kielbasa.
STEP 3
Chop remaining onion and add to fat in pan. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened, 4 to 5 minutes. Add flour. Cook, stirring, until beginning to toast, about 1 minute. Add potatoes, broth, and chile puree to pan, then return bacon, kielbasa, and ground beef to pot; season lightly with salt. Simmer, stirring a few times, until potatoes are tender and soup has reduced slightly, 10 to 12 minutes. Stir in beans and corn and cook to warm through, about 2 minutes. Season to taste.
STEP 4
Ladle soup into bowls and top with tortilla chips and cilantro.
Resident of the Month
Valerie Pawelek
This month, we honor Valerie, an extraordinary resident whose life story reflects resilience, community engagement, and a heartfelt commitment to helping others.
Valerie’s journey began on a family farm in Karnes County, located about 50 miles south of San Antonio. Growing up with two younger sisters, she cherished the simplicity of rural life surrounded by family. However, when she was around ten, her family relocated to a nearby town to pursue better educational opportunities during a difficult drought in the 1950s. With her father transitioning from farming to carpentry and her mother running a sewing business, Valerie learned the importance of hard work early on, often assisting her mother during the summer months.
After finishing high school, Valerie embarked on her career in San Antonio, moving into an apartment with a classmate. It was during this time that she reconnected with Gilbert, a childhood friend who had also settled in the city. They married and raised two sons, Todd and Cliff. Valerie devoted her early years to being a stay-at-home mom until they constructed their dream home, designed by the family.
Once her children were in elementary school, Valerie shifted to a role in hospital administration in San Antonio. Later on, she became a hospice volunteer coordinator, a position she found immensely rewarding as she trained others to support patients in need.
In 2000, after Gilbert’s retirement, the couple moved to the Boerne area to be to their grandchildren. Valerie’s post-retirement years were filled with volunteering as a tutor at the local elementary school and exploring genealogy, uncovering her family’s rich history.
Considering their health, Valerie and her husband transitioned to independent living in San Antonio, where they enjoyed forming new friendships and engaging in various activities. After Gilbert’s passing and then Valerie’s recovery from knee surgery, she chose to move closer to her family in Georgetown and found a welcoming community at The Oscar.
For the past five months, Valerie has embraced her new home, enthusiastically welcoming newcomers and actively participating in gardening activities. She enjoys sharing her bountiful harvest of cucumbers, tomatoes, and herbs with the kitchen staff and fostering connections with fellow residents and staff alike.
Valerie’s kindness and commitment to the community make her a beloved member of our community. We are truly grateful to have her and look forward to her ongoing contributions.
