Italian Tradition

Alexa, play Nessun dorma by Luciano Pavarotti.

“Nessun dorma” is one of the most famous arias in opera history, composed by Giacomo Puccini for his final opera, Turandot. Luciano Pavarotti’s record of “Nessun dorma” (1970) is legendary, his interpretation at the 1990 FIFA World Cup Ceremony in Italy was so powerful and emotional that introduced opera to a global audience, making him and the aria a global fenomenon and synonymous with triumph and passion. His soaring high notes, especially the final “Vincerò!”, became an unforgettable moment in music history.

Resident of the Month

Richard Di Ricco

This month, we are excited to highlight Richard as our Resident of the Month. A lifelong resident of Sacramento, Richard dedicated 37 years to Wonder Bread before retiring in 2006, eager to embark on new adventures.
One of Richard’s foundest memories is visiting the drive-in theater on Fridays and Saturdays. After the show, he would go to the pizza parlor for pizza and beer, creating lasting memories with friends and family that he holds dear.
Richard’s choice to move to The Oscar brought him closer to his daughter-in-law and family, allowing him to spend even more quality time with loved ones. He particularly appreciates the community atmosphere here, noting how friendly and welcoming everyone is.
In his spare time, Richard enjoys puzzles, reading, and watching movies, especially on Turner Classic Movies. He has a keen interest in history, documentaries, and Animal Planet is a favorite! He also resonates with Mark Twain’s quote: “Life is just one damn thing after another.” This reflects Richard’s positive outlook, which he brings into every part of his life at Oscar Senior Living.
The most significant lesson Richard has learned is the importance of being a good person and helping others whenever possible. His utmost happiness stems from the gift of life and cherishing moments with his wife, Helene, as he enjoys his favorite pastimes.
We feel fortunate to have Richard as part of our community. His joy, kindness, and optimistic spirit truly brighten our days!

Italian Masters

Mona Lisa, Leonardo Da Vinci, 1519

(Renaissance Amazing Facts)

Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa isn’t just a painting—it’s a mystery. Using sfumato, he created a lifelike, shifting expression that changes depending on where you look. Stare at her mouth, and she seems neutral; focus on her eyes, and a subtle smile appears. This optical illusion showcases Leonardo’s brilliance as both an artist and scientist. He carried the painting for years, perfecting it until his death in 1519, suggesting it was more than a commission—it was deeply personal. Today, her gaze still captivates, proving Leonardo’s genius in capturing the essence of human perception.
