Forget Fitness Trackers, A Hilarious Look at the History of New Year's Resolutions

New Year Resolutions

Forget gym sharks, New Year’s resolutions have a wackier past! Cavemen grunted pledges for more bison art, Babylonians promised axe returns to grumpy gods, and medieval knights? They aimed to be even less chivalrous, surprisingly! Renaissance painters vowed masterpieces and I imagine Victorian ladies aimed to faint less (faint-tastic!).

This year, raise a glass (prune juice, anyone?) to our ancestors. They knew fresh starts, even if it meant returning borrowed plows! So ditch the trackers, grab yarn & flour, and master that sourdough starter! Who needs a gym when you have history’s hilarity?

Clingmans Dome

At 6,643 feet, Clingmans Dome is the highest point in Great Smoky Mountains National Park & Tennessee. On clear days you can see over 100 miles in any direction. The highest peak in the park is easy to access for visitors of all ages and abilities and a must for any visit

Cades Cove

This beautiful misty mountain
valley is perhaps the most
popular spot in the park with its historic cabins, abundant wildlife, including black bears. The fall is the best time to visit providing excellent wildlife viewing opportunities and some of the best fall foliage found anywhere in the world.

Patrons Celebrate Christmas in Style!

Patrons Celebrate Christmas in Style

Our Patron Christmas event was a delightful explosion of laughter, delicious food, and surprises! Chef David’s culinary wonderland amazed everyone, with his savory bites and delightful paella aroma filling the brisk air. The unwrapping game and white elephant exchange brought joy and laughter, reminding us that the holidays are about celebrating friendships and creating memories. It was a festive kickoff to the season, filled with holiday spirit and heartwarming moments. Thank you to everyone who made it special! Let’s carry the spirit of laughter, generosity, and togetherness into the New Year!

Embracing Winter Wellness:

Embrace the season with these tips to keep your body and mind healthy & happy:

Warm Within-

Layer Up: Shield yourself from icy elements with cozy clothes, gloves, hat & sturdy boots.

Fuel Up: Soups, stews, teas & cider warm you from inside out. Winter veggies (squash, greens, root veg) boost your winter immunity and lean proteins like fish & beans keep you satiated.

Hydrate: Don’t forget water! Aim for 8 glasses daily despite thirst pangs.

Stay Active-

Virtual Gym: Workout videos & online classes offer exercise variety – find your perfect fit!

Step It Up: Aim for 30 mins of moderate movement most days. Dance, clean, or walk around the house – every step counts!

Conquer the Blues-

Sunshine Power: Open curtains & soak in natural light throughout the day.

Connect & Share: Video calls, social groups, or chatting with neighbors boost your mood & combat loneliness.

Find Your Spark: Dive into a creative hobby like painting, writing, or music. Enjoyment & accomplishment are mood boosters!

Remember, winter is for cozy nights, comfort food & loved ones. By prioritizing your well-being, you can transform these cold months into a season of joy, warmth & inner strength. Embrace the magic, stay safe, warm & well!

Resident of the Month

Nancy Hansen

Nancy Hansen, Resident of the Month January 2024 | The Oscar at Georgetown

Motherhood painted her life in two vibrant shades – her extraordinary daughters. When the girls bloomed, Nancy returned to the classroom, weaving her magic through Kindergarten to 8th grade. Her favorite canvas? Taming the “hurricane of hormones” that is 8th-grade English!

For Nancy, retirement wasn’t a rocking chair, it was a springboard. Sun City in Palm Springs became her playground, where golf swings replaced lesson plans. Nancy’s fingers discovered a new art form, quilting, and she began stitching stories into vibrant tapestries.

Life took an unexpected turn when she and her husband became avocado farmers in San Diego. After his passing, she faced the groves with unwavering grit, mastering irrigation and fertilizers like a seasoned rancher.

With time, the distance from her daughters tugged at her heart and Texas, with its warm winters, beckoned. Enter The Oscar, a haven where healthy food and vibrant community promised fertile ground for Nancy’s next chapter. So, raise a glass to Nancy, a California bloom thriving in Texas soil, proving that even life’s second acts can be bursting with sunshine!

1/4 cup orange juice
1/4 cup minced basil
2 cloves minced garlic
1/2 tsp ground ginger
salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup extra virgin olive oil

Directions:

What makes the Smoky Mountains smokey? The mist is formed from the vapor given off by all the plants in the mountains. When the vapor is released, the molecules that make up the gas scatter blue light from the sky, giving the fog its blue color.
