Patty G, also known as “Scooter Patty” is one of a kind. Patty was in the travel business for 44 years. However, her favorite job was being a mom and wife. Having 2 boys, she now has 5 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. Patty lived a very interesting and fun life. From barrel racing, hot air balloon rides and breeding golden retrievers to watching different animals be born all over the world. As she settles down and spends her time relaxing now, her favorite thing to do is play with her dog Bella, making her laugh and always keeping a smile on her face.

Dear Residents,
Fall has arrived. It feels a little different here in South Florida! Pumpkin spice everywhere is how I see it! We will be decorating for the season and have a lot of fun things happening this month. We will have our first Masquerade Ball—this will be a community party on Main Street October 15th from 4:00-6:00. Get out your fancy black, gold, and purple out for a band and wonderful dinner. Please invite your friends. We will also have the trick or treat for the littles on Halloween—we are inviting children of staff and of course your grandkids or great-grandkids. If you would like to participate and have a treat for the little ones, please sign up! We will put a sign on your door for the night for the trick-or-treaters to know you have treats (or tricks) for them. Our director team will be participating in activities. We are excited to have the team help with making your days more fulfilled!! Any suggestions on an activity you would like to see on the calendar are much appreciated. Keep an eye on the weekly calendar for updates on the main calendar. We will communicate any updates daily on our Alexa devices. Speaking of our Alexa’s-we will have a community-wide Alexa lesson to show you all the things Alexa can do for you here. This will be on October 9th from 1-2. I hope you will attend.

As always, please let me know if we can help your life here at The Goldton at Venice be any better.

From Your Wellness Department

Hello Residents, Family, and Friends!
I can’t believe it is October already! By now, it would start getting the chill in the air back in Chicago where I was raised. Of course, we live in Florida and the chill in the air won’t happen for another couple more months. Let’s all start preparing for Halloween! Do you have any fond memories of you and/or your kids during Halloween? I remember when I was young, I would hit the neighborhood with my friends and then go home and change costumes and do it all over again! We were a lucky bunch as we had several houses where one of the residents worked for Nestle, which was one town over, so we got FULL sized bars from them!! I want to remind everyone that you all still have the ability to sign up with one of our in-house providers for your care needs: Bluestone Physician Group for your medical needs, Advanced Foot and Ankle for your podiatry needs, and On-Site Dermatology for skin issues. Please see me or Brianna for consent forms.
Have a great October!!
Sean

Greetings from The Business Office

From the desk of Ann in the Business Office:

Hi Folks, fall will be soon upon us and cooler evening sleeping temperatures will be appreciated. The Snowbirds will be back in town soon as well, making our roads and stores very busy. I think that the retail stores such as Walmart are in a hurry for the seasons as I have noticed that they have not only Halloween decorations out but now they have Thanksgiving and even Christmas decorations ready for sale.
I am going be getting involved in at least one community activity a month so that I can interact with everyone and get to know you. On October 4th I will be bringing in my Golden Retriever Zoey for some pet therapy and I will be bringing her around to anyone who is interested in seeing her. We will be having a Masquerade ball in October where everyone dresses up very fancy and there will be great music. That should be a fun event. I hope to see all of you there. The beat the director activity series is also a lot of fun. We love to see the high turnout of residents at the community’s activity events.

I did want everyone to know that I am taking over the transportation department because that department already works side by side with the Concierge desk. We have a new transportation driver that has joined our team. His name is Kevin, and he already fits in very well. I am currently working on a solid transportation schedule with Laura. However, I did want to remind everyone that all transportation requests must be completed through the Concierge desk with 24-hour notice. The Concierge staff will set up the schedule for the drivers. All emergency exceptions will be handled case by case. We will get together a list of transportation services that can help with rides needed in the off hours. Please do not call drivers directly apart from when they are picking you up after a drive. especially after they have gone home for the day. They do not have the driving schedule with them when they go home.

Thank you and Happy Fall Blessings Everyone

Adrian Missana

Adrian Missana Resident of the Month

Adrian was born in Italy. He might tell you he’s part of the FBI (Full Blooded Italians). Before he moved to Canada, his education stopped after the 5th grade. As he then spent his time doing all sorts of things but mostly chores including going to the meat market once a week for his family. Having to grow up at such an early age, some would say he was never a boy. Later when Adrian moved to Canada he finished his junior and high school years and continued his education through college. He was the first in his family to go to college as well as the first one to learn english which led him to teach his family as well. They would call him the interpreter! Adrian worked in mechanical engineering for 38 years. He has 3 kids with a total of 6 grandkids. For the majority of Adrians day, he likes to listen to music and when he’s not listening to music, he’s either playing bingo with his fellow neighbors or admiring his favorite women’s basketball player, Caitlin Clark. We love having Adrian and his honesty here with us.

History of the Jack O’ Lantern
The jack-o’-lantern has a long history with Halloween, although our favorite demonic faces haven’t always been carved out of pumpkins. Their origin comes from an Irish myth about Stingy Jack, who tricked the Devil for his own monetary gain. When Jack died, God didn’t allow him into heaven, and the Devil didn’t let him into hell, so Jack was sentenced to roam the earth for eternity. In Ireland, people started to carve demonic faces out of turnips to frighten away Jack’s wandering soul. When Irish immigrants moved to the U.S., they began carving jack-o’-lanterns from pumpkins, as these were native to the region.
But how did jack-o’-lanterns become associated with Halloween? Halloween is based on the Celtic festival Samhain, a celebration in ancient Britain and Ireland that marked the end of summer and the beginning of the new year on November 1. It was believed that during Samhain the souls of those who had died that year traveled to the otherworld and that other souls would return to visit their homes. Halloween has roots in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. (October 31, All Saints’ Day, All Hallows’ Eve, All Souls’ Day, trick-or-treating, pumpkin carving, turnip, harvest festival)
In the 8th century CE, the Roman Catholic Church moved All Saints’ Day, a day celebrating the church’s saints, to November 1. This meant that All Hallows’ Eve (or Halloween) fell on October 31. Traditions from Samhain remained, such as wearing disguises to hide yourself from the souls wandering around your home. The folklore about Stingy Jack was quickly incorporated into Halloween, and we’ve been carving pumpkins—or turnips—ever since.
