Celebrating Our Resident of the Month in Our Senior Living

Brenda Courtney is an outstanding resident here at the Goldton. We wanted to highlight her kindness and bright energy. Brenda has called several places home because her father was in the military. She has lived in Washington D.C., Maryland, Mississippi, and then Alabama for the longest. She is very passionate about education and considers herself a lifelong learner. She received her bachelor’s degree at the University of Southern Mississippi, then a M.A. at Athens State, and an AA at Alabama A and M. She majored in elementary education and minored in journalism. Brenda then became an elementary school teacher for 30 years. She has taken graduate level courses at American University in Washington D.C. in international relations. Brenda enjoys being involved in organizations and volunteer work. Most recently she was on the Huntsville Pilgrimage Board, served as president of the Early Works Society and chaired “Supper with Santa” for two years. She has been a member of Alpha Delta Kappa since 1967 (a teacher’s sorority) and is a charter member of the Gothic Guild. She is a member of American Association of University Women and belongs to a bridge club, two book clubs and WIN (a Women’s Investment Club). Brenda has travelled to every state except Alaska and to various European countries, and Brazil. She spent a summer in Japan teaching with the Fulbright Memorial Masters Teacher Program. Brenda has a willingness to be a part of the community and give back to those who have given to you. Brenda cares for her family and friends with utmost respect and love. She is the mother of a son, and married for 53 years to Bill Courtney, now deceased. She describes herself as “A person who loves life, loves people, and enjoys both”. Brenda also enjoys good jokes, southern food, mahjong, reading, and sweet treats. Her motto recently has been “Don’t look back, you aren’t going that way”. We are so grateful to have Brenda in our community!
