Manager of the Month

Daniel Chattom has been the Goldton at Athens Wellness Director since July 2024. Daniel has been a nurse for over 18 years. Daniel is the father of one son. Daniel has came to the Goldton highly recommended. He has worked at St. Vincent’s Hospital in Birmingham, Al.. Daniel realized that working with the elderly is what he wanted to do once he moved to Madison, Al… When Daniel isn’t working, he loves going to bingo and karaoke night, he also loves spending time with his family.

Crafty Crafter's

The residents have been having such a good time with all the new crafts that they have been doing. The participation has grown over the months. Even the men are participating in the crafts. They love to say I don’t know what I’m doing but the artwork is always beautiful when they finish.

Pet therapy

The residents here love pets. Pets can get most of the people out of their rooms. This activity is sure to have more participation than any other activity during the week.

Devotion Time

Working on getting one of the ministers that come out for devotion to start coming out to serve communion. We are still working out the logistics of it but it will be happening for the residents soon. The church that will be providing the service is Emmanuel Baptist. The residents say that at their age their spirituality matters to them more now.

Velma Mitchum

Velma Mitchum Resident of the Month

Velma was born in Wedowee, Al to the parents of Willie Mae Oats and Rube Whaley. Velma had nine brothers and two sisters. Ms. Velma attended Randolph County High School. Ms. Velma was married to Mr. James Oliver Mitchum for 64 years. Ms. Velma worked in a department store when she and Mr. James meet around Valentine’s Day. Mr. James worked for NASA as an Accountant. Ms. Velam and Mr. James marital union produced two beautiful children (Cathy Williams and Richard Mitchum) from that union they had four grandchildren and five greatgrandchildren. Ms. Velma loves to read, travel, listen to music and watch a good movie. Her religious practice is Baptist. She loves the staff and residents here at the Goldton.
Ms. Velma favorite meal is:
Turnip Greens, Sweet Potatoes, Fried Green Tomatoes, Sliced Onions, Pinto Beans and Pork Chops.

Recipe Spotlight:

Crawfish Fettuccine

Ingredients:
Fettuccine Noodles
Crawfish, shrimp and crab boil seasoning
Butter, unsalted
Shallots
Garlic Cloves
Creole Seasoning
Worcestershire Sauce
Cream of Chicken Soup
Velveeta Cheese
Canned Tomatoes and Chilies
Crawfish Tail Meat
Green Onions

Directions:
Boil water with seafood seasoning, cook fettuccine until al dente, then drain (save some pasta water).
In a skillet, melt butter over medium-high heat, cook shallots and garlic until translucent.
Add chicken soup, Creole seasoning, tomatoes, chilies, and Worcestershire sauce. Bring to a boil.
Stir in cubed Velveeta until melted.
Add crawfish tails and green onions; cook for 2 minutes.
Combine fettuccine with the sauce. Cover and bake at 350°F for 15 minutes. Serve.

Sarah Bird was born October 11, 1994, Michigan to the parents of Tina Brown and John Davis. Sarah has two brothers and one sister. Sarah attended D’Iberville High School. Sarah’s work anniversary is April 2024. Sarah is a Christain. When Sarah isn’t working you may find her watching a movie, bowling, or going to the Main event. Sarah says she loves the residents and her coworkers. She loves the activities and festivities here at The Goldton at Athens.
