Word within a word

The residents here at The Goldton at Athens love their word and trivia games. They are always asking for words with a’s, t’s, s’s, l’s and y’s. I tell them they won’t find a word with all of those letters in it. No, matter the word they start rattling off words as soon as I put it on the board. I gave them the word blameworthiness. The residents found 246 words.

Terrence has been a great Executive Director, since he’s been here, he has made the community feel more like a home for the residents. He has an open-door policy that has made such a difference in the resident’s lives as well as the employees. We do a Family Fun night on the Friday of the month, and we have such a great getting to know our residents better as well as their families. The family members get to ask us questions that they don’t have time to ask when they are here daily. The families get to know us better as well.

Resident of the Month

Patricia Parmer

Pat Parmer Resident of the Month

Patricia Parmer was born Patricia Ann Walkenhorst in Pinckneyville, Il. She married Robert Parmer in 1957 and quickly had a daughter and 2 sons, each born in different states due to U.S. Navy transfers. Pat was primarily a homemaker, but after her children grew up, she completed an associate’s degree and worked at the local college. She is a lifelong Southern Baptist. After Pa was widowed in 2014, she started a widow’s support group through her church (Lindsay Lane Baptist) who met monthly for food and fellowship. Pat enjoys genealogy research and, over the years, has compiled and maintained details of ancestors on both sides of her extended family. Other hobbies include sewing, reading and answering Jeopardy questions correctly.Ms. Barbara and her husband Bobby lived in the Athens area their entire marriage, and while they did not have any children of their own they had many that were like their adopted children. She worked in the school system and speaks fondly of all of the children she encountered. She speaks more highly of her beloved great-nephew, Logan! Him and his dad, Jim, are the highlight of Ms. Barbara’s week when they come and visit and check on her.Our community as a whole voted Ms. Barbara Stinnet as our Resident of the Month and she couldn’t be more deserving of it.Congratulations!!!

Crafty Crafters

Our residents don’t mind getting a little messy when doing artwork. They don’t care about the project they just want to have a little fun doing it. Whether it’s staring a project or finishing it they just want to do it.

Arches

Double O Arch

The second largest arch within the Devils Garden area. As the name implies, there are two arches here, one large, with a
span of 71 feet, stacked atop a much smaller arch with a 21-foot span. It was formed by downward water erosion from atop the sandstone, rather than from side-to-side water erosion.

Recipe Spotlight:

Layered Fruit & Shrimp Salad

Ingredients:
2 cups watermelon balls
2 cups cantaloupe balls
2 cups honeydew balls
2 cups sliced peaches
2 cups sliced pears
2 cups quartered orange sections
2 cups sliced plums
1 cup fresh blueberries
1 cup fresh strawberries
1 cup cubed pineapple
2 dozen (21-25) count boiled shrimp
2 cups crawfish tails
1 recipe fruity yogurt dressing
1/2 cup chopped pecans

Directions:

In a large glass serving bowl, layer fruit by alternating stratas of color. Once all the fruit has been layered, line shrimp and crawfish in a decorative pattern around the edge of the bowl. Top with fruity yogurt dressing and toss the mixture to blend the dressing into the fruit. Sprinkle with pecans and serve immediately.

Fruit is not just for dessert anymore! With its wide range of colors and textures, nothing makes a more beautiful entree salad than layers of fresh or canned fruit. Why not create an interesting and unique summer salad by combining colorful, healthful fruit with fresh shrimp or other seafood?
