Associate of the Month

Jerry B

If you don’t know Jerry, I would be very surprised! He is always driving residents to and from appointments, making everyone laugh on bus outings and always has a warm welcoming smile and a hug if you’re lucky. This cheerful man has three dogs and loves each one like they are the kings of the castle.
Jerry will be the first to tell you why the Goldton is the most amazing community in the world and he finds it an honor to serve each and ever person with kindness and grace. He wants you to know his motto . . .” I want to take eery moment of the day and make a difference in someone’s life, to smile, laugh and just know they are loved”.

From France with Love

Alexa, play La Valse d’Amélie, by Yann Tiersen.

Yann Tiersen’s score for
Le Fabuleux Destin d’Amélie Poulain (released in 2001) catapulted him to international fame. “La Valse d’Amélie” is the musical heartbeat of the film — a delicate, spinning waltz that captures the whimsy and warmth of Montmartre. Its bright piano melody feels like a dance through Parisian streets, full of curiosity and gentle magic. Featured throughout the movie, it became one of Yann Tiersen’s most beloved themes and played a major role in earning Amélie its international acclaim

The Desk of the Director

As we enter this beautiful season of giving and gratitude, we want to take a moment to reflect on what truly makes The Goldton at Venice so special — our residents, their families, and the incredible sense of community we share. December brings with it the warmth of tradition, the sparkle of celebration, and countless moments to connect with one another.
We’re thrilled to begin the month with our Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 1st at 6:00 PM in the lobby. Please join us for cocoa, cookies, and carols as we officially welcome the holiday season. It’s a wonderful opportunity for residents, staff, and families to come together and celebrate the joy of community.

This time of year reminds us how fortunate we are to share our days with such kind and inspiring individuals. To our families — thank you for your continued trust, love, and partnership. Your involvement means the world to us and brings comfort and happiness to your loved ones every day.
As we close out the year, may the season bring peace, warmth, and beautiful memories to each of you. From all of us at The Goldton at Venice, we wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and a bright New Year ahead!
With heartfelt appreciation,

Laura Blakeman

December is a month that always seems to sparkle a little brighter here at The Goldton at Venice. The lights twinkle, the halls fill with the scent of cookies and cinnamon, and laughter seems to echo around every corner. It’s a time when neighbors become family and simple moments—sharing cocoa, decorating the tree, or singing along to favorite carols—remind us what community truly means.

We’ll officially kick off the holiday season with our Annual Tree Lighting Ceremony on Sunday, December 1st at 6:00 PM in the lobby. Join us for cookies, cocoa, and carols as we light up our beautiful tree and welcome in the warmth and joy of the season together.

This season gives us the chance to slow down and appreciate the beauty of connection. Whether you’ve been here for years or just joined our Goldton family, each of you brings something special to our community. Your kindness, smiles, and stories are the gifts that make this place so warm and welcoming.

As we celebrate together, we also look ahead with excitement to the year to come. Our January theme, “New Year, New You,” will offer new opportunities to grow, stay active, and embrace all that life has to offer. But before we turn the page, let’s savor these final weeks of the year—filled with festive events, heartfelt traditions, and the joy of being together.

From all of us at The Goldton at Venice, may your days be merry, your hearts light, and your season filled with peace and friendship.
Laura Blakeman

Florida winter, by Ann St Hilaire.

We do not get snow or a deep freeze.
No snow boots or hats and woolen mittens.
No school cancelations or any road closures.
No frozen pipes or snow shovels.

To you in the north I’m sure this sounds grand,
but to us in the south it’s quite a
bummer you see.

We do not wish for your freezing winters.
No we don’t want your hats or mittens.
Nor do we want the icy snow ridden roads.
And even if we wanted to try
we couldn’t shovel sunshine.

Call us complainers and whiners all you want.
We long for sunny days spent on the beach.
Flip flop weather is all we need.
Cook outs and sun bathing is what we crave.
Swimming and outside is all we want.

It may not freeze like up in the north,
but still far to cold to wear short shorts.

Spring and summer come back to us please!
We’ll be nice this year
if you just throw us a little breeze.
We’ll even settle for a little heat wave.

Just give us our sandals and sun.
Warm the water and let us have our fun.
Go away winter, you’ve had your fun!

Welcome to France
Around the World with Atlas

France is a country built on centuries of history, artistry, and revolutionary ideas. From ancient Gaul and the rise of the Frankish kingdoms to the birth of the modern French state, its story is one of transformation. The foundations of France took shape through the coronation of Clovis in the 5th century, the brilliance of Charlemagne’s empire, and the evolution of a nation that would eventually stand at the center of European culture and politics. Over time, France became known not only for its kings and cathedrals but for a spirit of curiosity and change that shaped the world.

French culture has left an indelible mark across the arts, philosophy, cuisine, literature, and fashion. From the Enlightenment thinkers who reimagined human rights to the painters who transformed visual expression — Monet, Renoir, Cézanne, Degas — France has long been a beacon for creativity. Its influence extends into cinema, music, architecture, and the culinary traditions cherished worldwide, from buttery croissants to slow-cooked Coq au Vin. Every corner of French life carries a sense of refinement balanced with a deep appreciation for pleasure, beauty, and daily rituals.

To explore France is to step into a living tapestry of medieval villages, grand boulevards, vineyards, seaside cliffs, and cafés where time seems to slow down. It is a country that invites discovery — whether through the echo of cathedral bells, the quiet glow of a museum hall, or the simple joy of strolling along the Seine. France welcomes visitors not just to see its landmarks but to feel its spirit: a blend of elegance, history, and poetic charm that has captivated the world for centuries.

Tips from the Wellness Director

Why skin gets thinner with age
As we grow older, our skin—the body’s largest organ—becomes thinner and more fragile, a condition often referred to as dermatoporosis. This makes seniors more vulnerable to bruising, dryness, irritation, and slow-healing wounds. Understanding why this happens and how to care for aging skin is key to maintaining health and comfort.
Layers of the skin & aging effects
Epidermis (outer layer): Becomes thinner with fewer pigment cells, making skin more pale and prone to UV damage
➤ Dermis (middle layer): Loses collagen and elastin, reducing strength and elasticity, and causing fragile blood vessels. .
➤ Hypodermis (deepest layer): Fat and connective tissue diminish, decreasing insulation and firmness. Additional factors like sun exposure, smoking, alcohol, certain medications, and natural aging accelerate skin thinning and reduce healing capacity.
Consequences of thinning skin: Protecting aging skin:
➤ Easy bruising from fragile blood vessels
➤ Delayed healing and increased infection risk
➤ Dryness and itchiness due to reduced hydration and skin barrier function
➤ Higher sensitivity to environmental damage These issues are especially critical for older adults in care settings, where mobility and comorbidities can further complicate skin health. .
➤ Sun Protection: Daily use of SPF 30+, wear hats, and avoid peak sun hours.
➤ Delayed healing and increased infection risk.
➤ Eat Well & Hydrate: A diet rich in fruits, veggies, omega-3s, and antioxidants support healthy skin.
➤ Be Gentle: Use mild, fragrance-free soaps and avoid hot showers.
➤ See a Dermatologist: Routine checkups help monitor changes and manage conditions effectively

Rita has worked for more then 30 years at the telephone company. Starting out as “Operator assistance” when you dialed 0 she quickly moved into moving the wires and cables to connect calls. She loved her job with great passion.
She loves the Goldton and has the greatest compliments for the staff that work so hard helping her and just being a friend. She notes that life has been a blessing and she wouldn’t have changed a thing. She also notes that at this age she fears nothing. As she looks up and said, my mother lived to 101.

Ms. Phyllis was a reporter for a newspaper up on the east coast for 15 years. She loved dearly with every fiber just to go out into the field to get the next scoop. She was always connected to her community and appreciated being apart of their daily life.
